The Real Role of Thumb in the Overall Function of Hand

    Get PDF
The human thumb is a uniquely evolved anatomical structure that plays a disproportionately significant role in the overall function of the hand. While often taken for granted, the thumb’s opposability, mobility, and strength make it indispensable for grasp, manipulation, and precision tasks that distinguish human dexterity from other primates and animals. This perspective article examines the biomechanical, evolutionary, neurological, and functional significance of the thumb in hand activity. Beyond simple gripping, the thumb contributes to balance, stability, and refined motion in both gross and fine motor skills. It enables power grips essential for labor, sports, and survival, as well as precision grips vital for writing, surgery, and art. The discussion also considers the thumb’s role in neural representation, rehabilitation, and prosthetics, highlighting its irreplaceability in daily life. Ultimately, the thumb is not merely one of five digits but the cornerstone of human hand function, underpinning culture, technology, and survival

The Relationship between Internet-based Entertainment and Self-expectations in Education in Adolescents: The Moderating Effect of Parenting Styles

    Get PDF
Drawing on personal and household data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2020, the study aims to examine the relationship between internet-based entertainment and self-expectations in education in adolescents, as well as analyzing the moderating effects of various parenting styles on this relationship. Its research findings reveal that internet use for entertainment purposes, such as online gaming and short-video viewing, can markedly undermine educational aspirations in adolescents; and that parenting styles have no significant influence on the negative effect of frequent short-video viewing on educational aspirations in this group, whereas tolerant parenting can suppress the negative effect of frequent online gaming, as opposed to neglectful parenting

Contribution of Body Fat to the Pathogenesis of Cancer

    Get PDF
The pathogenesis of cancer has been significantly influenced by body fat, which has the capacity to affect a variety of biological processes. Chronic inflammation and insulin resistance are known to be exacerbated by excess body fat, particularly visceral adipose tissue, which can establish an optimal microenvironment for tumor cell proliferation and progression. Adipocytes generate hormones and cytokines that can induce cancer cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Furthermore, adipose tissue serves as a storage facility for environmental toxins and carcinogens, which may be released into the bloodstream during periods of metabolic duress or weight loss. Additionally, obesity-induced modifications in the metabolism of adipose tissue can result in the dysregulation of lipid signaling pathways, which in turn induces tumorigenesis

Blood Glucose-Sensing Homeostasis-Mimicking Glycemic System: Is It a Scientific Possibility or Utopian Idealism?

    Get PDF
The concept of a glucose-sensing homeostasis-mimicking glycemic system represents a promising advancement in the field of diabetes management. This system utilizes bio-inspired sensors to continually monitor glucose levels in the body, automatically adjusting insulin delivery as necessary to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. While the idea of such a system may seem utopian, recent advancements in sensor technology and artificial intelligence have brought it closer to reality than ever before. However, challenges remain in terms of miniaturization, biocompatibility, and long-term reliability. As such, while the concept is undoubtedly grounded in scientific principles, further research and development are essential before it can be reliably developed and then adopted as a treatment option for diabetes

The Impact of the Parenting Style on Adolescent Empathetic Ability: A Comparative Analysis Based on Data from SSES 2019

    Get PDF
Developing social and emotional skills in citizens plays a vital role in promoting their democratic participation in societal construction. Currently, there is a dearth of cross-cultural studies on the relationship between adolescent empathy and parenting styles. Drawing on data of American, Canadian, South Korean, and Chinese students from SSES 2019, this article gives overviews of adolescent empathetic ability in two cultural circles, North American (Western) and East Asian (Eastern), and conducts a comparative analysis, using the method of descriptive statistics. It also explores the cultural differences in the relationship between the parenting style and adolescent empathetic ability through linear regression

Tapping into the Potential of Project-Based Learning by Exploring the Core Elements in Its Implementation

    Get PDF
Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered instructional approach (Bhat & Dar, 2023), with which, students learn by actively engaging in a complex project that involves activities like project design, problem-solving, decision-making, and investigation. A project in PBL typically entails challenging questions or tasks, and students develop knowledge and skills through inquiry and problem-solving over an enduring period. PBL’s benefits are many, such as the capability to enhance student motivation levels and cognitive engagement in the learning process (Blumenfeld et al., 1991) and its potential to improve students’ language proficiency, critical thinking ability, and communication skills in language education (Du & Han, 2016). Benefits like these have drawn wide attention of the education world to PBL, leading to its popularity and large-scale application at all education levels. On the other hand, certain studies find that PBL does not suit all subjects and students (Aristidou, 2020) and may demand excessive time and resources. In heavily loaded courses with inadequate equipment of teaching resources, PBL’s outcomes can be hampered (Handrianto & Rahman, 2018). Also, enacting PBL poses additional challenges to both the teacher’s instructional organization and the students’ learning attitudes. Nevertheless, its benefits by far outweigh its shortcomings. To fully utilize the former, it is necessary to develop thorough understanding of the essential elements in PBL’s implementation

“Unfinished Adult Children”: A Causal Analysis of the Issue of NEETs in China

    Get PDF
The issue of NEETs (not in education, employment, or training) has recently garnered more attention in Chinese society. In China, the current slang term comparable to NEETs is the “unfinished adult children,” referring to those young persons who are not successful in entering the workforce after graduation. This article focuses on analyzing the causes of the issue in China in three dimensions. In the dimension of tertiary education, college enrollment expansion, low alignment between educational supply and demand, and inadequate career planning and employment training have contributed to youth employment difficulties. In terms of home education, flawed educational expectations and parenting have compromised the social adaptability of the young generation. Personal problems with NEETs, such as irrational employment attitudes, low employment competitiveness, and self-lenient tendency have also exacerbated their predicament. Recom-mendations for addressing this issue are also proposed

In silent halls where thinkers tread, With minds alight and sleep long shed, Where whispers turn to thunderous thought, There blooms the art that cannot be bought.   Not bound by creed, nor chained by name, Its only god: the truth it claims. Through every age, through war and peace, Its quest for knowledge does not cease.   It starts with wonder, soft and small, A child’s glance, a droplet’s fall— Why does the apple hit the ground? Why do the stars not make a sound

    Get PDF
Mosquito-borne viral diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and West Nile virus continue to inflict considerable public health challenges globally, particularly in tropical and subtropical climates. These viruses are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, impacting economic development, straining healthcare systems, and disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Despite noteworthy advancements in vector control, immunization programs, and emerging genetic tools, the total eradication of these diseases remains elusive. This paper reviews whether human beings can realistically eradicate mosquito-borne viral diseases. It explores the historical context of disease control efforts, current strategies, novel technologies, environmental and biological challenges, socioeconomic and political dimensions, and ethical and ecological considerations. While complete global eradication is currently implausible due to various constraints, regional elimination and significant reduction in disease burden are achievable through integrated, multidisciplinary, and sustained efforts
