    Get PDF
The paper explores the attitudes of tourists visiting north-western part of Montenegro towards the significance and quality of certain elements within its tourist offer. The survey was conducted on the sample of 200 randomly selected tourists on the territory of all four constituent municipalities (Žabljak, Pljevlja, Plužine and Šavnik) in Montenegro. Comparative analysis of the attitudes was enabled by means of establishing the prevailing attitudes of tourists on significance and quality of tourist offer at the researched destination. The aim of the research was directed towards defining correlations between significance and quality of the selected elements within the tourist offer for north-western part of Montenegro based on the data analysis obtained by the questionnaire. This would mainly answer the question on correlation level between the significance and quality of the observed elements of the tourist offer. Moreover, by providing these answers, the research gains applicative importance since it renders the possibility of advancing the tourist offer of north-western part of Montenegro and highlights the most significant trends within the tourist offer of the researched area

REGIONAL TOURISM AS A STRATEGIC SECTOR FOR PORTUGAL: SUN, SEA AND MUCH MORE

    Get PDF
For its overriding importance in employment, investment, and the development of other activities, tourism is presented as a priority strategic sector for Portugal. After many years during which Portugal’s tourism industry focused mainly on the “Sun and Sea” product, there is now more diversification in product offerings in the country, ranging from green and beach tourism to health and well-being tourism, incorporating along the spectrum, sports, cultural, and business tourism. This diversification, and subsequent promotion of supply has allowed the development of the sector both qualitatively and quantitatively, and the emergence of touristic activities in new regions has leveraged not only greater uniformity in the use of available resources, but also helped to avoid the adverse effects of seasonality so characteristic of traditional tourism based on the “Sun and Sea”

REGIONAL GROWTH IN PORTUGAL: ASSESSING THE CONTRIBUTION OF EARNINGS AND EDUCATION INEQUALITY

    Get PDF
Regional economic growth in Portugal has mainly been studied from the perspective of convergence with data ending by the early 2000’s. The country as a whole has stopped converging to the output levels of the richest European countries by this period and has also become one of the most unequal EU member-states in terms of income distribution in the meantime. It is thus important to analyze the growth performance at the regional level in a more recent period, 1995-2007, emphasizing regional disparities in inequality as explanatory factors. This study examines the relationship between inequality and regional growth in Portugal at NUTS III level exploring the explanatory power of earnings and education inequality measures computed with data from the Quadros de Pessoal database. The results point to a positive relationship between initial inequality and regional growth, stronger for education than for earnings inequality, but with earnings inequality measures revealing a higher explanatory power. Moreover, there is evidence that it is inequality at the top end of the distribution that is relevant to explain regional growth, a result that reinforces the higher propensities to save of the richer and the incentives mechanisms of transmission from inequality to growth. Additionally, the evidence on the existence of convergence among Portuguese NUTS III regions during the period under analysis is mixed. These findings are robust to the introduction of most additional control variables and the consideration of alternative measures of earnings and education inequality

THEMATIC DIMENSION OF GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE: AN EVIDENCE FROM THE WESTERN CAUCASUS

    Get PDF
The geodiversity hotspot comprising 14 geological heritage sites is located on the territory of Mountainous Adygeja in the Western Caucasus (southwestern Russia). The geosites represent some lengthy intervals of the geological history from the Precambrian to the Quaternary, as well as changes in the palaeotectonical affinity of the Greater Caucasus. Visitors of this territory can observe rocks, fossils, and facies, which are typical for the geological periods, especially the Permian, the Triassic, and Jurassic, and the Cretaceous. The same geosites permit to trace shift of the Greater Caucasus Terrane from the Gondwanan margin, where it was before the Devonian, to Laurussia and then Laurasia. Therefore, the geosites can be grouped thematically to facilitate arrangement of geoconservation and geotourism activities. This approach permits to increase the scientific and educational values of the geological heritage in Mountainous Adygeja and to make it more attractive for geotourists. However, such a thematic treatment of the regional geological heritage should not lead to underestimation of the other geological features

CERTAIN ASPECTS OF RURAL PLANNING IN SERBIA

    Get PDF
Rural planning has been neglected in the system of geographical scientific disciplines in Serbia for a long period. It was incorporated in the researches regarding development of rural areas, while in the recent scientific literature it is observing through “renaissance” of rural areas. Rural geographers, the ruralists, have placed it in recent years in a broader context, correlating it with other scientific disciplines. The aim of this paper is to present the current understanding of rural planning in Serbia, to point out the concept of rural planning and to indicate at what stage of development it currently is in comparison to other developed countries

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN NATIONAL PARK “ĐERDAP”, SERBIA – ATTITUDES OF LOCAL POPULATION

    Get PDF
In the context of the broader controversy about sustainable development, tourism literature highlights the importance of the support of the local population to tourism development. The active support of the community is essential for the local government, the future development policies and all entities that participate in the creation of sustainable tourism development. The specific dimension of this influence exists in protected areas, given the pronounced strong environmental component and a bond that is created among tourism - protected area - locals. The paper analyzes the attitudes and opinions of the local population residing in the National Park “Đerdap” or its protection zone about the effects and control of tourism development, as well as the availability of information on sustainable tourism and the impact this activity has on the community. The method applied is survey research on a sample of 227 respondents. During the preparation of the survey, the methodological procedure for the analysis of sustainable tourism indicators ware used proposed by the World Tourism Organization

DELINEATION OF MOUNTAINS AND MOUNTAIN AREAS IN EUROPE–A PLANNING APPROACH

    Get PDF
Mountains are usually understood as high elevation areas, which are sparsely populated and where nature is preserved. The elevation above sea level is the most commonly taken as a criterion for mountain delineation, but the complexity of the task arises when definitions are compared in different national contexts, between projects and particularly when they are applied in decision-making process. Therefore, this paper aims to give a review of the existing palette of mountain definitions and mountain area delineations, to recognise some common criteria used in the definitions, as well as to review topics and situations in which the delineations are applied and used in spatial planning. Due to the diversity of cases, it was necessary to reduce scope of the topic; therefore the paper is limited to the European context and particularly to countries representing the largest European mountain massifs – Alps, Apennines, Pyrenees, Dinaric Alps and Carpathians

TEMPERATURE ALTITUDE AMPLIFICATION AS A FOOTPRINT OF A POSSIBLE ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACT ON THE CLIMATE OF AUSTRALIA

    Get PDF
In the conditions of dominant influence of anthropogenic greenhouse effect and according to simulation models, a more intensive temperature increase in upper-air layers of troposphere than in lower-air layers should be expected. In order to check this, the difference between temperature trends in the middle and lower troposphere over the Australian continent has been analyzed. Satellite data UAHMSU for lower troposphere (TLT) and middle troposphere (ТМТ), for the 1979–2014 period have been used in the study. Estimates have been done on seasonal and annual value, and the results obtained indicate that there is a trend of temperature increase, but not altitude amplification over Australia. Reducing the time series for a year from the beginning (1980–2014, 1981–2014…), a comparative analysis between corresponding time series for each season, i.e., each year, showed that from 140 mutual comparisons, altitude amplification does not exist in 130, i.e., in 93% of cases. Moreover, in sub-periods of 1996 (1997–2014, 1998– 2014…), we can not even talk about warming in most cases because the trend of temperature is negative

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEMOGRAPHIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND KNOWLEDGE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ON NATURAL DISASTERS

    Get PDF
The subject of quantitative research is to examine the connection between demographic (gender, age) and environmental factors (family, school and media) and knowledge and perceptions of students about natural disasters. Bearing in mind the orientation of the research design on determination of character and strength of relationships of demographic and environmental factors with the knowledge and perceptions of students about natural disasters, research has explicative goal. The authors use the method of interviewing high school students to identify demographic and environmental factors associated with the knowledge and perceptions of students about natural disasters. The study included 3,063 students of secondary schools in the city of Belgrade. Results suggest the existence of links between gender, success achieved in school and education of parents and the knowledge of students about natural disasters. The results also indicate that the education of students at school and within family does not affect the knowledge, but affects their perception on natural disasters. Bearing in mind the geographical space of Serbia, the study is based only on the Belgrade region, so the findings can be generalized only to the population of students in this area. Research findings indicate potential ways to influence students to raise level of knowledge about natural disasters to a higher level. Given the evident lack of education about natural disasters in Serbia, the study results can be used for policies of educational programs, which would contribute to improving the safety of youth culture

THE ROLE OF PATH-DEPENDENCE IN THE LOCAL ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION

    Get PDF
The examination focuses on the issue of path-dependence, which is considered to be the core concept of evolutionary economic geography emphasizing the importance of historical development. Although the notion of path-dependence is used both in negative and positive contexts, we place the latter in focus leaving room for changes, as we are interested in the question how the local economic base can be reinforced by the development of perspective activities. Our key question involves aspects of regional development, namely how medium-sized settlements can be positioned as hubs in the economic space dominated by large cities in the age of globalization. With regard to the opportunities for establishing localization-type agglomeration advantages, which are important for the generation of positive feedback mechanisms in the broadest sense, the healthcare industry appears to be a perspective research field in the case of our examined city, Debrecen. Not only significant traditions and remarkable weight does the sector represent in the economy of the city, but the development ideas. In our presentation we attempt to delineate the corporate and institutional actors of the local healthcare industry. On the other hand, the companies are examined in three temporal sections after the change of regime, in order to unfold the dynamic segments of the healthcare industry. Business registers and corporate databases of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office are analysed in addition to the evaluation of corporate reports, press releases and documents of economic development reinforcement of healthcare industry constitutes a columnar component of the loca
