Does Poverty Increase Crime?
This study examined whether a correlation exists among crime statistics between communities based on median income, funding levels, and number of police officers. The data was collected from research on 12 communities throughout New Jersey, a state with varying average incomes. The communities were chosen at random. Four communities had an average household annual income of more than 99,999 and the poverty line. The last four had an average household income below the poverty line. Recognizing possible correlations among these variables can lead to efforts identifying appropriate funding levels, better community programs, improvements in education, and more, leading to the next movement in fighting crime and showcasing a more proactive economic approach
The Correlation Between Insomnia & Student Status
The purpose of the study is to understand the correlation between insomnia and student status. Student status refers to a person being enrolled in a course of study. This project focused specifically on college level students for this research with the goal to understand the factors that relate to insomnia within college students. Other researchers have posed recommendations within their studies such as better health care within the universities, as well as better sleep habits. Throughout these studies, there were comparisons made between majors, general public v. student status, on which populations struggle more with insomnia-based symptoms. Understanding the correlation between insomnia and student status is important because overall, it benefits the students’ wellbeing and academic performance. Researchers collected data through a digital cross-sectional quantitative survey conducted between the years 2020, 2022 and 2024 with a total of 1,022 participants. The results identified that there is no significant correlation between student status and insomnia. Further studies would need to be introduced in order to identify other factors that may contribute to insomnia
Asexuality and Anxiety
Current literature suggests that asexual individuals have higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental poor mental health outcomes compared to allosexuals, regardless of sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) identity. However, few studies exist that examine the experiences of asexual individuals. SGM adults were recruited via Reddit to participate in a digital survey hosted on Qualtrics between February-March 2022. Multivariable logistic regression assessed the relationship between anxiety and gender minority status, sex assigned at birth, and being asexual, adjusting demographic variables. In fully adjusted models, gender minorities had significantly increased odds of having anxiety (OR[95% CI] = 1.44 [1.13, 1.84]) compared to individuals who were not gender minorities. Individuals who reported that they were asexual were found to have significantly reduced odds of having anxiety (OR[95% CI] = 0.58 [0.40, 0.84]) compared to individuals with any sexual orientation other than asexual (allosexual). Individuals assigned female at birth were significantly more likely to identify as asexual compared to those assigned male at birth. These novel findings contradict current literature and suggests that individuals who identify as asexual have reduced risk of anxiety. More extensive research is needed to better understand mental health outcomes for asexual individuals
Universal Kitchen Assistant
For many people with full or partial limb loss, loss of sensation, tremors, and many other conditions, it can be a dangerous task to move hot cookware around the kitchen, especially around the stove. As of 2024, it is estimated that ~2.4 million Americans live with limb loss. It has been projected that this number will increase by 145% due to the increasing prevalence of conditions such as diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. The objective of the Universal Kitchen Assistant is to assist in the movement of heavy pots and pans to and from the stovetop to the oven. The device would eliminate as much of the lifting as possible and can be operated completely with one hand. To solve this problem, a prototype was constructed using a tray of heat-resistant rollers and bumpers, allowing pans to easily be pushed without falling over the edge of the platform. This platform can then be raised and lowered to any height, from stove top to various racks within the oven. This works with a spring-loaded hinge that allows for single-handed operation and a smooth, controlled motion of the platform. Should this solution be found to be successful, it could be installed in individual kitchens to allow people maximum independence in the kitchen, or it could be installed in occupational therapy simulation kitchens to help patients recovering from a variety of conditions and injuries
Senior Wall Invite
The Senior Wall Invite is a pop-up letter, designed to invite friends, family and loved ones to the Senior Showcase. The invite is a small scale model of the Senior Wall, and featured an interactive fridge (when opened, it featured a sneak peek into the projects that are on display during the event), and a mini sink (where the recipient is able to pull out a temporary tattoo of the designer\u27s logo)
