On the importance of being a data-savvy librarian
In the last years a sense of the importance of making all data related to scientific research open, shareable and therefore reusable, has spread in all the areas of scientific research. As this has generated a need to develop policies, infrastructures and services in order to assist researchers in creating, collecting, manipulating, analysing, storing and preserving datasets, this is a unique opportunity for libraries to play an active role in the research process.Librarians, along with their traditional skills, such as their ability to retrieve and organize information, consult and teach, should develop an understanding of the technical aspects of data management, developing new skills and capabilities
Altmetrics as new indicators of scientific impact
In recent years, researchers and academics in growing numbers are starting to move their everyday work onto the Web, exploring new ways to spread, discuss, share and retrieve information outside of the traditional channel of scholarly publishing. As scholarly communication moves increasingly online, there is a growing need to improve the ways in which the impact of scientific research output is evaluated. Altmetrics, even if they are still in an early stage, have the potential to develop as complements to traditional metrics and to provide a useful insight into new impact types not included in existing measures. This paper summarises the major trends, opportunities and challenges of these new metrics for both researchers and academic research libraries
Running a journal club
This article outlines elements in a workshop on running a journal club. The session took place during the EAHIL+ICAHIS+ICLC workshop in Edinburgh, in June 2015. The article includes a summary of advice and issues raised by workshop participants, and a bibliography of articles about journal clubs in the library and the healthcare sectors
Increasing transparency for e-journal subscriptions and Big Deals. A comprehensive assessment of e-journals in Science, Technology and Medicine (STM)
The University library of Bern carried out a one-year survey of the frequency of use, cost and cost-per-article-use (CPU) of its e-journals. The collected data allows a comparison of journal bundles and individual subscriptions. The results show that the CPUs for Big Deals are in an acceptable range; however because of their high cost they limit the library’s flexibility to provide user-oriented resources
Research data management: why is it important?
Research Data Management is a hot topic these days, with research funders making it a requirement for institutions that they fund. This report will give an overview of research data management (RDM) activities, Data Curation Profiles (DCPs) and RDM training for librarians and support staff. It will focus on the importance of planning for both data preservation and data sharing from the very start of a research project, and the various ethical issues relating to the subsequent sharing of data that is increasingly a research funder requirement. Finally, it will highlight the range of potential RDM support roles that might emerge within institutions, and the requirement for adequate training of librarians and other support staff to enable them to meet the challenges that these new activities and responsibilities might present
