Replication Data for: Synthetic Replacements for Human Survey Data? The Perils of Large Language Models
Large Language Models (LLMs) offer new research possibilities for social scientists, but their potential as “synthetic data" is still largely unknown. In this paper, we investigate how accurately the popular LLM ChatGPT can recover public opinion, prompting the LLM to adopt different “personas” and then provide feeling thermometer scores for 11 sociopolitical groups. The average scores generated by ChatGPT correspond closely to the averages in our baseline survey, the 2016–2020 American National Election Study. Nevertheless, sampling by ChatGPT is not reliable for statistical inference: there is less variation in responses than in the real surveys, and regression coefficients often differ significantly from equivalent estimates obtained using ANES data. We also document how the distribution of synthetic responses varies with minor changes in prompt wording, and we show how the same prompt yields significantly different results over a three-month period. Altogether, our findings raise serious concerns about the quality, reliability, and reproducibility of synthetic survey data generated by LLMs

Undercurrent in Taiwan: Nationalism and Calculation of the cross-strait Relations (2002-2022)
Literature highlights the conflicting trends between rising nationalism and stable preferences on Cross-Strait relations in Taiwan. This article unveils new insights from the Taiwan National Security Survey (2002-2022, 14 waves, n = 16,494) to unravel this incompatibility. The survey employed “conditional preference” items to capture how Taiwanese people shape their Cross-Strait attitudes. Since 2002, Taiwanese identifiers have increased steadily, while dual identifiers have decreased. Most respondents still prefer the status quo, but there is a gradual rise in support for independence. Hypothetical scenarios reveal that a majority support independence if China will not attack, and oppose unification if China and Taiwan differ economically and politically. Furthermore, the percentage supporting independence given China will attack is increasing, while the percentage supporting unification if China and Taiwan are similar has considerably decreased. Conditional preferences are influenced by perceived economic benefits from China and the military strength of China, Taiwan, and the US.

Assessing the Impact of Low Testosterone Levels and Frailty on Urinary Incontinence in Elderly Women: A Prospective Cross-Sectional Study
This study examines the relationship between low testosterone levels, frailty, and urinary incontinence (UI), specifically stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), in elderly women. Conducted at the Yokosuka Urogynecology and Urology Clinic, Japan, this prospective cross-sectional study enrolled 2,721 women aged 60 and above. We classified 1,328 participants into frailty and no-frailty groups, with equal representation. Our investigation revealed that 36.2% of participants reported SUI, and 28.7% reported UUI. After adjusting for age discrepancies using ANCOVA, significant associations were found between low total testosterone levels and both forms of UI, particularly in the frailty group. Multivariate analysis showed that low testosterone levels, diabetes, and cerebral infarction were significantly associated with SUI in the no-frailty group, while factors such as age, low testosterone, diabetes, and vaginal deliveries were linked to UUI in the frailty group. These findings underscore the importance of considering frailty and low testosterone levels in the therapeutic approach to UI in elderly women. The study suggests a novel perspective on the pathophysiology of UI, highlighting the need for specific treatment strategies targeting these risk factors
