Replication Data for: Estimating Parties’ Policy Positions in Uruguay: Comparing Scaling Methods Based on Legislative Speeches and Roll-Call Votes
This research note takes advantage of a novel dataset to analyze legislators’ behavior in Uruguay’s Parliament. Comparing the positions of legislators based on floor speeches and roll-call voting, it discusses the relationship between discourse and voting among individual legislators and parties. The dataset contains more than 57,000 speeches from more than 1,000 Uruguayan legislators between 1985 and 2015 and its
related R package. The study estimates the parties’ policy positions on the basis
of two data sources, roll-call votes and floor speeches, and then compares both
results. Contrary to expectations, no clear association appears between the two
scaling methods, demonstrating that vote and legislative speech may reflect the
behavior of individual legislators with potentially conflicting goals. Strategic
calculations or party discipline may be plausible explanations for the divergent
results obtained from text and roll-call scaling methods
Empathic Concern and Perspective-Taking have opposite effects on affective polarization
Empathy has been proposed as a solution to alleviate interparty antipathy. Recent findings from the US suggest that one aspect of empathy -- empathic concern -- increases rather than decreases affective polarization. Perspective-taking, another aspect of empathy, has no effect on affective polarization. In this article, we describe a preregistered replication and extension of these findings in the contrasting political context of the Netherlands, to see whether this relationship generalizes beyond the US. First, using a cross-sectional nationally representative sample of 1,258 Dutch voters, we show that empathic concern indeed fuels affective polarization while at the same time we find that perspective-taking reduces it. Second, using a two-arm survey experiment (n=438), we show that perspective-taking reduces ingroup bias, whereas empathic concern does not. Reflecting on the American and Dutch findings, we conclude that while empathic concern likely contributes to affective polarization, perspective-taking may reduce it
Analysis of risk factors for early type 2 diabetic nephropathy complicated with retinopathy
Objective To retrospectively analyze the risk factors for early type 2 diabetic nephropathy (DN) complicated with retinopathy (DR) and to provide a basis for early prevention and delaying the progression of retinopathy.
Methods The clinical data of 268 patients with early type 2 DR who were hospitalized in the Department of Endocrinology and Nephrology in our hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were collected and divided into the non diabetic retinopathy (NDR) group and DR group according to the fundus examination results, with 145 patients included in the DR and 123 cases in NDR group. The baseline clinical data, laboratory indicators, and complications of the two groups were compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed on the risk factors for early type 2 DN complicated with retinopathy.
Results (1) The baseline clinical data of the two groups showed that the differences in age, smoking history, duration of diabetes, family history of diabetes, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure were statistically significant (all P <0.05). The differences in glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, blood uric acid, and urine microalbumin were statistically significant (all P <0.05). The difference in the incidence of sclerosis was also statistically significant (all P <0.01). (2) Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the course of diabetes, hypertension, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, blood uric acid, urine microalbumin, combined coronary heart disease and carotid atherosclerosis were all risk factors. High-density lipoprotein was analyzed to be a protective factor for early type 2 DN complicated by retinopathy.
Conclusion In view of the risk factors for early type 2 DN complicated with retinopathy, active control of blood pressure and improvement in metabolic levels were important for preventing and delaying the onset of retinopathy

Supplement 4: Ethical dilemma negotiation simulations
This document serves as a supplement to the article: [Kesting, P., & Smolinski, R. (2023). A Practical Guide to Negotiation Simulation Writing. Negotiation Journal, 39(3), 297–326], https://doi.org/10.1111/nejo.12439. In this document, we introduce another type of negotiation simulation that either could not be included in the article due to space limitations or because it was not yet developed at the time of the article's publication. This document builds upon the concepts presented in the article, an understanding of which is necessary to make full use of the supplementary material. We recommend that readers pay particular attention to the article's section on the negotiation simulation development process—which discusses pedagogical objectives and scenarios—and the section on general design principles. This document contains the negotiation simulation "A New Market" available for unrestricted use under the Creative Commons CC BY-ND license. (2024-03-26
Replication Data for: When Redistribution Backfires Politically: Theory and Evidence from Land Reform in Portugal
Scholars have long recognized that reform policies shape mass politics. We theorize how reform impacts two key but underexamined groups – eligible nonbeneficiaries and ineligible individuals – in addition to beneficiaries and payers. We argue that proximity to policy consequences and the extent of policy reform shapes the behavior of these groups and can drive otherwise unanticipated political dynamics, including backlash against reformers. We test the theory using original data on a major redistributive reform: mid-1970s land reform in Portugal. Exploiting variation in local land reform intensity and a plausibly exogenous “bump” in reform treatment that disproportionately increased proximity to reform in areas of low policy intensity, we find that the reform party, the Communists, retained appeal where land reform was intense but lagged politically in most parishes where reform was partial, mainly among eligible nonbeneficiaries. Counter-reform through land returns then drove polarization, including gains for the right among ineligible nonbeneficiaries
