Replication Data for: Leveraging Large Language Models for Fuzzy String Matching in Political Science
No full textFuzzy string matching remains a key issue when political scientists combine data from different sources. Existing matching methods invariably rely on string distances, such as Levenshtein distance and cosine similarity. As such, they are inherently incapable of matching strings that refer to the same entity with different names such as ''JP Morgan'' and ''Chase Bank'', ''DPRK'' and ''North Korea'', ''Chuck Fleischmann (R)'' and ''Charles Fleischmann (R)''. In this letter, we propose to use large language models to entirely sidestep this problem in an easy and intuitive manner. Extensive experiments show that our proposed methods can improve the state of the art by as much as 39% in terms of average precision while being substantially easier and more intuitive to use by political scientists. Moreover, our results are robust against various temperatures. We further note that enhanced prompting can lead to additional performance improvements

No full textThe "Fields on Fire" dataset describes the frequency and impact of fires (in terms of the quantity and cost of burned households) in 49 provinces (in the western/European part) of the Russian Empire. The data covers a five-year period from 1860 to 1864. A subset addresses incidents of arson. The data was sourced from an official publication by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and mapped according to historical spatial data extracted and adapted from the Geographical Atlas of European Russia. The package includes province-level data (polygons) and town-level data (points)
Voting for Disabled Candidates
No full textDespite important advances in the rights of disabled people over the past decades, stigma and prejudice remain widespread. Meanwhile, disabled political representatives are few and far between. This raises the question: do voters discriminate against disabled candidates? Using data from conjoint experiments in the US and the UK, this study shows that candidates with physical or sensory impairments are preferred by voters on the left while receiving less support from voters on the right. However, these effects are almost entirely due to voters’ perceptions of disabled candidates as more left wing. Disability has little direct effect on the vote choice – except among left-wing voters, who reward left-wing disabled candidates for representing under-represented groups. The findings expand our understanding of the role of disability in electoral politics and yield important insights for candidates and parties who are concerned about discrimination at the ballot box and their campaign strategies
