Replication Data for: Meritocracy as Authoritarian Co-Optation: Political Selection and Upward Mobility in China
Why does an authoritarian regime adopt meritocracy in its political selection? I argue that meritocracy can be used to co-opt large numbers of ordinary citizens by providing them with an opportunity of socioeconomic advancement instead of income redistribution, as long as the selection process is viewed as inclusive and rule-based. Focusing on the civil service examination in contemporary China, I examine how this meritocratic selection has shaped the relationship between college graduates and the Chinese regime. Exploiting a spatial-cohort variation in applicant eligibility, I find that the exam boosts college graduates’ perceived upward mobility, which in turn weakens their demand for redistribution even in the face of growing inequality. These findings point to an alternative mode of authoritarian co-optation and highlight the role of upward mobility in regime stability

miR -135a-5p regulates inflammation-induced myocardial fibrosis by targeting APCs
Background: Explore the mechanism of miR-135a-5p on the progression of myocardial fibrosis (MF).
Methods: A total of 66 rats were used to construct the MF model. Hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining was used to reveal the morphological characteristics of myocardial tissues. The expression of fibrosis markers and inflammatory factors were identified by ELISA as well as RT-qPCR, respectively. Bioinformatics was used to screen molecules specifically expressed in MF and its effect on rats MF progression. The effect of miR-135a-5p on the expression of target molecule was identified by dual luciferase reporter assay. The effect of APC on fibrosis markers and inflammatory factors in mice MF model was detected. Ang II-stimulated human fibroblastic cardiomyocytes (HAFs) were constructed as a MF cell model, and miR-135a-5p and APC were detected for their effect on fibrotic progression in Ang II-stimulated HAFs.
Results: In the rats MF model, collagen deposition was increased, transverse striations was disappeared, myofibrillar structure was unclear, reticular fibrosis was seen. The Col1a1, α-SMA, Collagen II, and TNF-α, IL-6 were increased. miR-135a-5p was highly expressed in MF and overexpression of miR-135a-5p stimulated the fibrotic process. miR-135a-5p decreased APC luciferase activity and APC expression was low in MF, and stimulation of APC attenuated the fibrotic process.
Conclusion: The activation of APC can attenuate the fibrosis-stimulating effect exerted by miR-135a-5p, thereby mitigating the progression of fibrosis and inflammatory response

Replication Data for: When do voters see fraud? Evaluating the role of poll supervision on perceptions of integrity.
What shapes voter perceptions of election outcomes? Recent disputes in Malawi and Kenya highlight the vulnerability of local vote counts to accusations of malfeasance, which often generate negative public perceptions of vote reliability. Election monitoring in these countries is thought to crucially affect both the quality of the election and voters’ perceptions of the same. To date, most research on this topic has focused on the effect of non-partisan electoral observers. However, in many countries two other interest groups also monitor the vote counting process: political party agents and government election officials. Does the presence of these actors also affect voter perceptions of election integrity? To answer this question, I conducted a conjoint experiment in Malawi and Kenya in which voters evaluate the reliability of vote counts from hypothetical polling stations where the presence of party agents, non-partisan observers, and election officers is varied. I find that the presence of each of these groups does indeed shape voter perceptions: voters are more likely to view vote counts as reliable when they are co-signed by a party agent, election official, or non-partisan observer. Further, these preferences persist regardless of the voters' own party affiliation or trust in electoral institutions
