Replication Data for: Treaty Withdrawal and the Development of International Law

    No full text
I argue that treaty withdrawal has two opposing effects on the development of international law. First, it directly impacts the treaty where it occurs by pushing remaining members to adopt reforms to maintain cooperation. Second, it indirectly affects the development of other treaties by damaging diplomatic relations between the withdrawing state and other members, hindering negotiations in other areas of cooperation. Consequentially, treaty withdrawal has a mixed impact on the development of international law: it expedites the reform of one treaty while inhibiting reform elsewhere. I test this argument by applying a difference-in-differences design to an original panel of treaties built from the records of the United Nations. My findings reveal that while withdrawal increases the number of reforms in treaties where it occurs, it decreases reforms in similar treaties with comparable memberships. The indirect effect exceeds the direct effect in substantive terms: overall, treaty withdrawal impedes the creation of international laws

The Study of Italian Regional Politics and the Composition of the Regional Political Class. The ITREGPARL dataset

    No full text
One of the most persistent challenges in the study of regional politics in Italy is the lack of systematized data and information about the composition of regional legislatures and governments and the profiles of elected officials. In this paper, we describe the ITREGPARL dataset, a new comprehensive dataset of Italian regional politics comprising 6077 regional politicians from 1993 to 2020. It includes information about regional councillors, regional ministers, presidents and vice-presidents of the regional council, regional presidents and vice-presidents. Along with socio-demographic characteristics – gender, age, previous profession, education – it includes data such as experience and incumbency, number of mandates, length of service and partisanship. It also includes region-level variables, such as geographical area, type of gender quotas and the regional authority index

    Unpacking Russia’s Cyber-Incident Response

    No full text
I collected the quantitative data from online archives of the four Russian-language media outlets: TASS (https://tass.ru/), Rossiyskaya Gazeta (https://rg.ru/), RIA Novosti (https://ria.ru/), and Lenta.ru (https://lenta.ru/). In each case, I used the Russian-language interface and the Search function of the respective websites. The data were selected manually (without any software) and inserted into Excel spreadsheets, forming four datasets: TASS (Dataset_TASS.xlsx), Rossiyskaya Gazeta (Dataset_ Rossiyskaya_Gazeta.xlsx), RIA Novosti (Dataset_ RIA_Novosti.xlsx), and Lenta.ru (Dataset_Lenta.ru.xlsx). All datasets contain publication date of reports and respective URL (with the exception of Dataset_ RIA_Novosti.xlsx which contains hyperlinks). In each dataset, the reports containing attribution of cyberattacks against Russia are highlighted in yellow. These reports are cited and analyzed in greater detail in the “Public Attribution of Cyberattacks in Russia: Longitudinal Media Analysis” section of my paper
