Caregiver Stress in Dealing with Traumatic Brain Injury Family Members

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is sudden damage to the brain caused by a jolt or blow to the head. The common causes of TBI are due to falls, sports injuries, and car or motorcycle crashes. TBI can be classified into several types, ranges from a mild concussion to severe permanent brain damage. Nevertheless, the impacts of TBI are quite devastating not only to the patient but also on the family. It may last for several years, hence the affected patient definitely requires ongoing care which is normally provided by informal caregivers, such as spouses, parents, or other family members. In addition, TBI can cause drastic changes to the life of the family members. The caregiver’s stresses including psychological problems, family burdens, changes in behavior and changes in social roles will be discussed critically in this article. Based on the literature, many caregivers lack good coping strategies in dealing with their stress. More well-designed interventions is an absolute necessity among TBI family caregivers to lessen the stress and improve their social well-being and functioning

System Theory and Ecological Approach in Social Work Practice: An Actual Case Illustration

The system theory has a significant impact on social workers since the 1970s. It advocates that the whole system, or a family, is made of different individuals. In this regard, the interest of the ‘family’ or the group is greater than the interest of individual members. The system function as each part interacts (communicates) with each other. This article discusses the application of an intervention-based system theory in the practice of social work. Furthermore, it presents a case illustration of an actual case to understand the application of system theory in the practice of social work. The case illustration details the clients’ issues and how the fundamental basic systems in the system theory, specifically, the client system, change agent system, target system and action system could be applied in social work practice. The actual case illustration study has facilitated a system theory analysis of the people, the environments, and changes that are related to the clients’ wellbeing to find the most effective intervention targets and strategies. In this regard, system theories bring the environment back into the concept of people in the environment. It can be concluded that system theory is an important tool to guide professionals across all levels of social work practice

Data and facts from the media show that the problem of children who conflict with the law is still a daily consumption. This phenomenon of child problems requires serious attention and handling from various parties. The impact of the behavior of children in conflict with the law is not only on the victim but also on the perpetrator himself, the family, and society in general. This article is directed to answer the question of how the risk, protector, and implications for child prevention efforts conflict with the law. This study is based on the study of literature from the perspective of social construction which views that conflict with the law as the reality of the interaction of the individual child and his environment. Social construction recognizes that psychological and sociological aspects work together in combination and this helps create and shape individual realities.  The everyday reality experienced by the individual is a reality that affects the response of his/her attitudes and behavior.  Individual behavior is a picture of the behavior of people who interact with them. Children generally grow up in four contexts where they interact with others for a long time, namely family, school, peers, and community environments.  The four environmental contexts are not only risk factors but become protective factors for the occurrence of child behavior in conflict with the law. References to this paper are sourced from books, journals, and other reliable sources and have an element of novelty both from within Indonesia and from abroad. This paper is intended to be a concern and awareness for various parties so that finally the prevention efforts carried out have the maximum impact and cases of children who conflict with the law are not repeated

Transnational domestic work is considered a multi-billion business that involves mostly women as workers, but requires cooperation between sending and receiving countries. It is also supported by private sector recruitment agents and institutions that provide services such as transportation, banking, and health. At the local level, this business is maintained by social, cultural, and economic factors that keep the flow of worker migration. This paper specifically focuses on the life of returned transnational domestic workers living in Bondan village of the Indramayu district (West Java province, Indonesia) including two main points of women’s experience on working overseas and its impact to the life of the women. Applying participatory action research method, the study involved fifty female participants (n=50) in in-depth interviews. The study shows that due to work-related issues, not all of the women are successful to achieve their dreams of helping their families. Furthermore, applying theory of change and action, the study introduces a model of community economic development (CED) that aims to help women and families. The model has been developed in a form of CED project aiming to improve the women’s knowledge, entrepreneurial skill and experiences, business management, teamwork and collective responsibilities

Various changes that have occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic require students to be able to adapt to various academic demands and rise from existing problems, considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing today. This ability is referred to as academic resilience. This study aims to see the picture of academic resilience in students in terms of self-concept and family support. The subjects in this study were students at Bhayangkara University, Jakarta Raya. The sampling technique used in this study is purposive Sampling. The data analysis method used in this research is multiple linear regression analysis. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the effect of two variables X (self-concept and family support) on variable Y (academic resilience). Based on the results of the regression analysis, the value of p = 0.005 or p <0.05 and the value of F = 5,631. That is, self-concept and family support together can predict academic resilience. The results of the analysis can be seen as the value of the coefficient of determination or effective contribution of self-concept variables and family support simultaneously or together can predict the resilience of 10.4%, while the rest is influenced by other factors

The Paradox of Victims’ Perceptions and Knowledge against Flood Causes

This study aims to unravel the paradox of perceptions and knowledge of the flood victims towards the causes of the disaster in the context of internal and external. Internal context comprises of a comparison of perceptions and knowledge based on individual characteristics (age, gender, education and income). Whereas, the external context includes the factors of the awareness of the victims towards the amount of rainfall, the impact of land use changes as well as the negligence of the responsible parties. The main objective of this study is to determine the differences of perception and knowledge of December 2014 flood victims in Kelantan towards the factors that lead to the flood. This disaster had resulted in huge amount of money lost as well as traumatize the victims in which can be felt to this day. Since that incident, there were various points of view and different perceptions in finding the cause of the disaster occurred. Besides that, the study found that the level of perception and knowledge as to the cause of the disaster is different in the context of the internal (individual characteristics). This difference has a significant influence on the awareness of the causes of the floods that occurred in the external context. Significant relationships at the level of p<0.05 has existed between perception and knowledge of the causes of the disaster victims affected by environmental changes in the last 10 years. This indicates that although the victim is aware of the physical environment changes happening around them, but all that is seen is not a major contributing factor to the cause of the floods in Kelantan in 2014
