Computational Study of Transverse Slot Injection in Supersonic Flow

    Get PDF
The knowledge of transverse sonic injection flow field is very important for the design of scramjet combustor. Three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes equations alongwith turbulence models are solved to find the effect of transverse sonic slot injection into a supersonic flow. Grid sensitivity of the results is studied for various structured grids. Simulations with different turbulence models (i.e., k-ε, k-ω, SST-kω, and RNG-kε) reveals that RNG-kε turbulence model better predicts the flow features. Computational fluid dynamics predicted wall pressure distribution for various injection pressures matches well with experimental data. The extent of upstream separated region increases with the increase of the injection pressure. The increase of slot width makes the interaction between transverse jet and free stream more intense and causes more spreading and penetration of injectant in the downstream region

Multi-objective Optimisation of Multi-robot Task Allocation with Precedence Constraints

    Get PDF
Efficacy of the multi-robot systems depends on proper sequencing and optimal allocation of robots to the tasks. Focuses on deciding the optimal allocation of set-of-robots to a set-of-tasks with precedence constraints considering multiple objectives. Taguchi’s design of experiments based parameter tuned genetic algorithm (GA) is developed for generalised task allocation of single-task robots to multi-robot tasks. The developed methodology is tested for 16 scenarios by varying the number of robots and number of tasks. The scenarios were tested in a simulated environment with a maximum of 20 robots and 40 multi-robot foraging tasks. The tradeoff between performance measures for the allocations obtained through GA for different task levels was used to decide the optimal number of robots. It is evident that the tradeoffs occur at 20 per cent of performance measures and the optimal number of robot varies between 10 and 15 for almost all the task levels. This method shows good convergence and found that the precedence constraints affect the optimal number of robots required for a particular task level

Infrared and Structural Studies of Micro and Nano-crystalline Ta Doped Lead Zirconate Titanate Ceramics

In this paper, influence of additives on structural properties of Tantalum (Ta) doped PZT ceramics, prepared by solid-state oxide and mechanical activation (MA) routes, has been studied. The Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies, are done to understand the structural interactions, confirmed that the wave number and bond energy decreases with the increase in Ta content accompanied by decrease in grain size. FTIR spectrum becomes broader in nanocrystalline Ta-PZT. The fraction of tetragonal phase decrease along with reduction in grain size as the Ta content increase. The remnant polarisation and coercive field also follows the similar trend on Ta doping. It is seen that infrared spectroscopy results corroborate the structure and ferroelectric properties of PZT materials

Development of Adaptive Threshold and Data Smoothening Algorithm for GPR Imaging

    Get PDF
There are many approaches available to separate the background and foreground in image processing applications. Currently, researchers are focusing on wavelet De-noising, curvelet threshold, Edge Histogram Descriptor threshold, Otsu thresholding, recursive thresholding and adaptive progressive thresholding. In fixed and predictable background conditions, above techniques separate background and foreground efficiently. In a common scenario, background reference is blind due to soil surface moisture content and its non-linearity. There are many methodologies proposed from time to time by researchers to solve this blind reference background separation. But challenges still now remain, because there are two major problems in ground penetrating radar imaging such as targets like ground enhances the false alarm and non-metallic target detection, where the threshold decision is a critical task. In this paper, a novel real time blind adaptive threshold algorithm is proposed for ground penetrating radar image processing. The blind threshold was decided to use normal random variable variance and image data variance. Further, the image was smoothened by random variance ratio to image data variance. Experimental results showed satisfactory results for the background separation and smoothening the targeted image data with the proposed algorithm

Application of Spatiotemporal Fuzzy C-Means Clustering for Crime Spot Detection

    Get PDF
The various sources generate large volume of spatiotemporal data of different types including crime events. In order to detect crime spot and predict future events, their analysis is important. Crime events are spatiotemporal in nature; therefore a distance function is defined for spatiotemporal events and is used in Fuzzy C-Means algorithm for crime analysis. This distance function takes care of both spatial and temporal components of spatiotemporal data. We adopt sum of squared error (SSE) approach and Dunn index to measure the quality of clusters. We also perform the experimentation on real world crime data to identify spatiotemporal crime clusters.

Numerical Investigations on Wedge Control of Separation of a Missile from an Aircraft

    Get PDF
To make the missile safely separate from the internal weapons bay, a wedge flow control device is mounted on the front of the bay to control the variation of flow during the separation. The numerical simulations of missile separation without and with wedge flow control device under different sizes are carried out. The flow fields of different separation processes are obtained and discussed; the aerodynamic parameters and trajectory parameters of missile of different cases are illustrated and compared. Results show that, the wedge flow control device can accelerate the missile separation and has the effect of regulating the angular motion of missile. The influence of the wedge height is stronger than that of its length on the center of gravity motion and angular motion of missile

Fragmentation Behaviour of Radial Layered PELE Impacting Thin Metal Target Plates

    Get PDF
The fragmentation mechanism of the penetrator with lateral effect (PELE) after perforating a thin target plate has been summarised and analysed firstly. Then the fragmentation of radial layered PELE was analysed qualitatively and verified by experiment. In the experiment, the target plates were made of 45# steel and 2A12 aluminium respectively. Qualitative analysis and experimental results show that: for normal PELE without layered, after perforating the thin metal target plate, from the bottom to the head of the projectile, the number of fragments formed by the jacket gradually increases, and the mass of the fragment decreases correspondingly. Compared with the normal PELE without layered, the radial layered PELE is less likely to break into fragments, when impacting the thin metal target plate with the same material and thickness under the same impact velocity. However, from the mechanism of the PELE, when the resistance of the target plate is large enough, and the duration of pressure is long enough, the radial layered PELE also can break into fragments with transverse velocity component. The resistance of the target plate plays an important role in the fragmentation of radial layered PELE. The radial layered PELE produced massive fragments with transverse velocity component when impacting the 45# steel plate with5 mm thickness under the impact velocity of 657.2 m/s

Study and Analysis of Exhaust Emission of Diesel Vehicles using Thermal IR Imagers

    Get PDF
Exhaust emission analysis from diesel vehicles has received a lot of attention in recent times in the context of implementation of Bharat Stage-IV norms and thermal signature analysis for civil and military applications. The exhaust emission thermal IR signatures of military diesel vehicles such as truck and bus using a gas analyser and thermal imager under idling and accelerating conditions of these vehicles is investigated. Concentration and temperature of diesel exhaust emission CO, NOx, and HC remains almost constant during engine running in idle condition and varies with the engine acceleration. Exhaust gases maximum temperature reaches in the range of 240 °C - 270 °C during engine acceleration. A detailed investigation of thermal signature in mid wave infrared, 3 µm - 5 µm waveband and long wave infrared, 8 µm - 14 µm waveband is also presented under the same engine running conditions. Thermal image analysis exhibited that the area of thermal IR image of diesel vehicles truck and bus has been increased 0.077 per cent and 0.594 per cent, respectively with the engine acceleration. It has been observed that thermal signature of exhaust gases is a good tool for vehicle exhaust emission visualisation and analysis

Experimental Studies on Axial Bolted Joint between E Glass Epoxy Flat Laminate and Steel Flat Plates Subjected to Uni-Axial Tensile Repeated Loading for 15 Cycle

    Get PDF
Axial bolted joint between EN-31 steel flat plates and E-Glass Epoxy thick, flat laminate consisting of helical winding layers with ±30° helical angle of winding and fabric prepreg layers, was realised with 3 number of M10, 12.9 property class steel fasteners on each side and assembly was tested under uni-axial tensile repeated loading and unloading up to 8.1 ton proof load and to 0 respectively, for 15 cycle. Aim of the experiment was to study the damage induced if any and further increased, in E-Glass epoxy laminate near joint regions, under tensile repeated loading and unloading for 15 cycle. Total length, width and thickness of metal composite axial bolted joint test assembly were 700 mm, 150 mm, and 22 mm, respectively. Longitudinal and transverse strain was monitored at 31 strain gauge locations in composite laminate near joint regions, in all the 15 cycle. For first cycle, longitudinal strain was plotted during loading up to proof load of 8.1 ton and unloading to 0, to check the linearity of strain variation with increase and decrease in load, respectively. It was observed that strain at all strain gauge locations was varying linearly. Maximum strain measured was 4035 micro strain in 1st cycle. Residual strain at all strain gauge locations was observed very less. No defects were induced in composite laminate after 15 cycle

Aerodynamic Parameters Estimation Using Radial Basis Function Neural Partial Differentiation Method

    Get PDF
Aerodynamic parameter estimation involves modelling of force and moment coefficients and computation of stability and control derivatives from recorded flight data. This problem is extensively studied in the past using classical approaches such as output error, filter error and equation error methods. An alternative approach to these model based methods is the machine learning such as artificial neural network. In this paper, radial basis function neural network (RBF NN) is used to model the lateral-directional force and moment coefficients. The RBF NN is trained using k-means clustering algorithm for finding the centers of radial basis function and extended Kalman filter for obtaining the weights in the output layer. Then, a new method is proposed to obtain the stability and control derivatives. The first order partial differentiation is performed analytically on the radial basis function neural network approximated output. The stability and control derivatives are computed at each training data point, thus reducing the post training time and computational efforts compared to hitherto delta method and its variants. The efficacy of the identified model and proposed neural derivative method is demonstrated using real time flight data of ATTAS aircraft. The results from the proposed approach compare well with those from the other
