    Get PDF
Annular shaped charge can efficiently create large penetration diameter, which can solve the problem of small penetration diameter of a traditional shaped charge, and thus meeting the requirements of large penetration diameter in some specific situations. In this paper, the influence of five kinds shell structures, i.e. no shell, aluminum shell with thickness of 2.0 mm and steel shell with thickness of 2.0 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.0 mm, on bore-center annular shaped charges (BCASCs) formation and penetrating steel targets was investigated by numerical simulations and experiments. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The results showed that, from no shell to aluminum shell of 2.0 mm and then to steel shell of 2.0 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.0 mm for BCASCs, the diameter and radial velocity of projectile head decrease, the axial velocity of BCASC projectiles increases gradually, the penetration diameter of the targets decreases, and the penetration depth increases. The penetration diameter caused by the BCASC with no shell is the largest, being 116.0 mm (1.16D), D is the charge diameter. The penetration depth caused by the BCASC with steel shell of 4.0 mm thickness is the deepest, being 76.4 mm (0.76D)

Development and Rheological Characterisation of Abrasive Flow Finishing Medium for Finishing Macro to Micro Features

    Get PDF
Technological advancement demands the manufacturing of components with a fine surface finish at a minimal cost. This scenario acts as the driving force for the research communities to develop economic finishing processes. Abrasive flow finishing (AFF) is one of the advanced finishing processes employed for finishing, deburring, radiusing and recast layer removal from the workpiece surfaces. AFF process uses a finishing medium that acts as a deformable tool during the finishing process. It is the rheological properties of the medium that profoundly influences the end surface finish obtained on the workpiece after the AFF process. In the current work, an attempt is made to develop an economic AFF medium by using viscoelastic polymers i.e., soft styrene and soft silicone polymer. Detailed static and dynamic characterisation of the medium is carried out. Later, to study the finishing performance of the developed medium, AFF experiments are performed for the finishing of macro and micro feature components. The experimental study showed that the nano surface finish could be achieved by varying the viscosity of the developed medium. Developed medium achieved 89.06 per cent improvement in surface roughness during finishing of tubes (macro feature component), while 92.13 per cent and 88.11 per cent surface roughness improvement is achieved during finishing of microslots and microholes (micro feature component), respectively

    Get PDF
Novel methods for production of nanomaterials are urgently needed for various applications, especially in defence. In this work, we propose a direct method to produce silver nanoneedles using the femtosecond laser direct writing (LDW) technique. Femtosecond pulses were focused by a microscope objective on to a metal sheet to produce the nanoneedles. Nanoneedles of required dimensions were fabricated with a simple replacement of microscope objective of different numerical aperture. Further, we have investigated the effect of confinement. Finally, the application of nanoneedles is demonstrated for trace level detection of picric acid using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and a field deployable portable Raman spectrometer

Hybrid Data Acquisition and Analysis System for Flowing Medium Lasers

    Get PDF
The medium gas lasers involves in-situ generation of the lasing medium, hence are associated with several complex processes including mixing of pumping and lasing species, energy exchange between the species, heat generation during reaction and its influence on the flow domain to list a few. Thus, the characterisation of lasing medium, condition of operation of individual critical subsystems and corresponding phenomenon thereof is essential in real time. It is here that a customised data acquisition and analysis system (DAAS) plays a key role. The paper dwells on the realisation of a customised hybrid DAAS with a master-slave architecture, which is portable and provides remote system operation. The noteworthy aspects of the developed DAAS include capability to handle close to 150 channels [64 analog input, 64 digital output, 5 analog output and 17 digital input] simultaneously with varied sampling rates requirement ranging from 100 samples/s to 200 k samples/s, modularity in design enabling scalability. Further, the efficacy of the developed DAAS has been tested by conducting several real time experiments with an existing chemical oxygen iodine laser source with a mass flow rate of 2.3 moles.s-1 both from close ranges and at line of sight remote distances of up to 80 m and nearly 35 m with obstacles

Low profile Compact Printed Monopole Antenna for Satellite based AIS Application

    Get PDF
In this paper, a simple, low profile compact printed monopole antenna has been proposed for satellite based automatic identification system (SB-AIS). The design consists of a printed monopole, which has been meandered to achieve optimum size reduction. The detailed investigation in terms of bending of the arms of monopole, width of the patch and dimensions of the ground plane on the resonance frequency and input impedance is presented. The antenna is matched to a typical 50 Ω coaxial line without any requirement of external matching structures. The prototype of the antenna is fabricated and tested at an operating frequency of 161 MHz for SB-AIS, with compact size of 44.5 . 17 cm2. The measured results show that the antenna has a bandwidth of 15 MHz (9.3 per cent), gain of 1.87 dBi and beam-width of 82° in the elevation and omnidirectional in azimuthal plane. The size reduction is 53.8 per cent as compared to a linear printed monopole antenna

Constitutive Equations for Microstructural Features Developed During Solid Particle Erosion of 52100 Steel

    Get PDF
Solid particle erosion of the 52100 bearing steel induced the normal growth of the tempered lath martensite, the low angle boundaries and the recovery islets. Microstructural features were revealed using the electron microscopy. Constitutive equations for the normal growth of the tempered lath martensite, energies of the low angle boundaries, and size of the recovery islets have been derived. The normal growth rate of the tempered lath martensite has been derived from the oriented mobility of the boundary in crystallite-stress fields, the driving force from the boundary energy and the pinning force from the uniformly distributed precipitates. Read-Shockley equation has been redefined using the dislocation density term as the misorientation of the boundary. An advanced Read-Shockley equation has been used for predicting the size of the recovery islets (0.12 mm to 0.27 mm) from the local energy equilibrium of the recovered tempered lath martensite, and validated by the TEM bright field microscopic study

3D Localisation of Target using Elevation Angle Algorithm with the use of Ground Radars

    Get PDF
A new novel method based on elevation angle algorithm (EAA) is proposed in this paper, to obtain 3D position of target using range and azimuth measurements of two ground 2D radars. The EAA estimates optimal target elevation angle wrt contributing radar by solving a non-linear optimisation problem using Levenberg-Marquardt method in geo-centric frame such as earth-centred-earth-fixed. The target position in geodetic frame (WGS84) is then obtained using slant range, azimuth and estimated elevation angle. The proposed method is evaluated using simulated but realistic radar data and accuracy of estimated position is found to be comparable with true position (error within acceptable limit). The method is also evaluated with real data from actual ground 2D radars and estimated target position is found to be comparable with reference navigation data (GPS) on-board of target. For each radar, corresponding Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to handle noisy, asynchronous measurements and to provide estimated range and azimuth at common reference time for altitude estimation using proposed EAA method. In case of real data, the estimated altitude is found to be comparable GPS altitude with error less than 5 % of true altitude. From the study, it is found that EAA is suitable to estimate target position using measurements from only two contributing asynchronous 2D radars in real-time as compared to some other techniques such triangulation and Trilateration where at-least three radars are required to get the position of target. This method can be useful to utilise network of vintage long range 2D radars to determine target position and to fill the gap wherever/whenever target is out of detection range of 3D radars. In addition, EAA method is compared with commonly used methodology such range only localisation and results are presented

Study of Radiophotoluminescence of Eu Doped CaSO4 Phosphor for Gamma Dosimetric Applications

    Get PDF
CaSO4:Eu phosphor is synthesised by acid distillation method with varying synthesis parameters for studying its Radiophotoluminescence (RPL) properties for gamma absorbed dose measurements. Five phosphor samples are prepared by varying quantity of solvent, distillation temperature and reaction time. XRD, SEM, particle size analysis and photoluminescence studies are carried out. The characterisation study shows polycrystalline luminescent particles of average size varying from 35 μm to 55 μm. Characteristic emission of Eu3+ is observed around 590, 615 and 620 nm at 242 nm excitation. Gamma dose response of maximum Eu3+ PL intensity sample is studied in the range 10 cGy to 1000 cGy using Co-60 source. Gamma radiation exposure induces conversion of Eu3+ to Eu2+ giving luminescence at 385 nm with 320 nm excitation. Repetitive measurements of gamma exposed samples are carried out and no significant fading is observed within one week of post-irradiation. The phosphor has the potential to be used for gamma dosimetry

    Get PDF
Present study examined the microstructural features, hardness and wear performance of TiAlN, TiCrN and            n-TiAlN/α-Si3N4 coatings deposited by cathodic arc physical vapour deposition (CA-PVD) technique on M-50 steel keeping in mind a possible application of hybrid bearings in next generation aero-engine. Microstructural features of the coatings were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy. Hardness was measured using microhardness tester. Wear test was carried out with the help of ‘Bruker’ tribometer. Worn surfaces were characterised employing SEM. Results show that TiCrN coating has crystalline columnar structure and other coatings have nano-crystalline structures. Besides improved hardness, TiAlN has best wear resistance and TiCrN coating exhibits least friction coefficient

A Hybrid Computational Intelligence based Technique for Automatic Cryptanalysis of Playfair Ciphers

    Get PDF
The Playfair cipher is a symmetric key cryptosystem-based on encryption of digrams of letters. The cipher shows higher cryptanalytic complexity compared to mono-alphabetic cipher due to the use of 625 different letter-digrams in encryption instead of 26 letters from Roman alphabets. Population-based techniques like Genetic algorithm (GA) and Swarm intelligence (SI) are more suitable compared to the Brute force approach for cryptanalysis of cipher because of specific and unique structure of its Key Table. This work is an attempt to automate the process of cryptanalysis using hybrid computational intelligence. Multiple particle swarm optimization (MPSO) and GA-based hybrid technique (MPSO-GA) have been proposed and applied in solving Playfair ciphers. The authors have attempted to find the solution key applied in generating Playfair crypts by using the proposed hybrid technique to reduce the exhaustive search space. As per the computed results of the MPSO-GA technique, correct solution was obtained for the Playfair ciphers of 100 to 200 letters length. The proposed technique provided better results compared to either GA or PSO-based technique. Furthermore, the technique was also able to recover partial English text message for short Playfair ciphers of 80 to 120 characters length
