Designing a Cavity Backed Microstrip Antenna with Enhanced Isolation for the Development of a Continuous Wave Ground Penetrating Radar

    Get PDF
This paper presents an improved design of a rectangular microstrip antenna at 920 MHz by backing it with an appropriate cavity wall to enhance the isolation between the transmitter and receiver antenna for use in applications, where the weak received power gets masked by the direct coupled power between two antennas. Antennas having 0.12 λ cavity wall with separation gap of 0.36 λ resulted in an isolation of 52.6 dB at a resonance frequency of 920 MHz with maximum and minimum isolation of 71.4 dB and 49.1 dB, respectively for 5% BW of the antenna designed. These antennas were fabricated and tested, which are used in the development of Continuous Wave Ground Penetrating Radar with an online graphical user interface; leading to the validation of the usefulness of proposed antennas. The isolation achieved at an optimised separation of the antennas enabled detection of metal targets as small as a bunch of wire buried 20 cm in the soil and non-metal, like wood and plastic buried in soil. It enabled the detection of a circular steel target of radius 12.5 cm buried at a depth of 65 cm in loose semi-dry pebbled soil

Investigations on Monolithic Radome Interactions with Active Electronically Scanned Array on Fighter Platform

    Get PDF
The conventional fighter aircrafts are often equipped with fire control radar (FCR) using mechanically scanned antenna (MSA) with passive slots enclosed with monolithic conical radome. When the fighter platforms get upgraded with the modern active electronically steered array (AESA) FCR for better mission capabilities, even though radome change is desirable for optimum performance of AESA, it may not be feasible due to development time. This necessitate the evaluation of AESA radar with the existing monolithic radome. Hence active antenna aperture radiation pattern is required to be assessed with monolithic radome. To address this issue, simulation is preferred over physical testing, due to the reduced cost, time and complexity in measurements and ability to verify compatibility. In the present paper, the influence of monolithic radome on the active antenna radiation patterns are simulated and analysed. The characterisation studies helped for better optimisation of active aperture, optimum size for new radome development and additional space on fighter platforms that can be used for integration of new subsystems. Simulations are performed at two different locations of antenna inside radome. Experimental validations have been carried out to prove the efficacy of simulated results, which are in agreement

Active Flow Control over a NACA23012 Airfoil using Hybrid Jet

    Get PDF
A time-dependent numerical simulation is performed to examine the flow separation control with the action of a hybrid jet (the combination of synthetic and continuous jets) over a NACA23012 airfoil. The unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) simulation is performed with Spalart-Allmaras (SA) turbulence model to simulate the flow field around the airfoil to analyse the effect of the hybrid jet. A combined jet is placed at the point of flow separation on the upper surface of the airfoil which is located at the 12% of the chord length from the leading edge of the airfoil for a given flow configuration. Flow simulations are performed at a chord-based Reynolds number of 2.19 × 106 for the hybrid jet oscillating frequency of 0.159 at a blowing ratio of 3.0. The contribution of the continuous jet in the hybrid jet is evident by the flow control. Variation in the continuous jet velocity is studied, which improved the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil. The maximum improvement in lift to drag ratio is observed from 11.19 to 22.14 at an angle of attack of 22 degree. The stall angle also shows an enhancement from 18 degree to 20 degree

Comparative Study of Ram Air Turbines based on Wind Tunnel Study for Specific Air Borne Energy Extraction

    Get PDF
Ram Air Turbines (RAT) are used for emergency on-board power generation on aircraft and associated systems. Many studies on usage of RATs have shown promising results in terms of using RATs as a source of emergency on-board power generation. Many external podded systems on aircraft utilise RATs for self-sufficient adaptation. These pods generate their own power using RATs for their power requirements instead of depending on the mother aircraft power. Commercial cargo planes use RATs for generating emergency hydraulic power. A RAT was suggested to be used for emergency power, during failure of main alternator on a prototype aircraft. A specific requirement of the RAT was also to produce high drag for aerodynamic braking when deployed and concurrently generate electrical energy. Three models with different solidity were studied in wind tunnel at different wind speeds for suitability of this drag-energy combination. This paper presents the results of the study. Based on the results, a suitable RAT was selected for further analysis and ground trials

Passive Shallow Water Automated Target Recognition using Deep Convolutional Bi directional Long Short Term Memory

    Get PDF
The extremely challenging nature of passive acoustic surveillance makes it a key area of research in NavalNon-Co-operative Target Recognition especially in Anti-Submarine Warfare systems. In shallow waters, thecomplex acoustics due to the highly varying ambient background noise as well as the multi-modal propagation in the surface-bottom bounded channel makes surveillance even difficult. In this work, an ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks and Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory stages employing soft attention is used to effectively capture the spectro-temporal dynamics of the target signature. In order to alleviate the overall computational cost associated with the optimal model search in the extensive hyperparameter space, a recursive model elimination scheme, making frugal use of the available resources, is also proposed. Experimental analysis on acoustic target records, collected from the shallows of Arabian Sea, has yielded encouraging results in terms of model accuracy, precision and recall

Security Analysis of Bit plane Level Image Encryption Schemes

    Get PDF
A selective bit-plane encryption scheme was proposed for securing the transmission of image data in mobile environments with a claim that it provides a high security viz. the encryption of the four most significant bit-planes is sufficient for a high image data security. This paper presents the security analysis of the said encryption scheme and reports new important results. We perform the security analysis of the bit-level encryption by considering the normal images and their histogram equalised enhanced images. We consider different bit-plane aspects to analyse the security of the image encryption, and show that the encryption of the four most significant bit-planes is not adequate. The contents of the images can be obtained even when all the bit-planes except one least significant bit-plane are encrypted in the histogram equalised images as shown in the results. The bit-plane level security analysis seems very useful for the analysis of the bit-plane level image encryption schemes

Crack Tip Radius Effect on Fatigue Crack Growth and Near Tip Fields in Plastically Compressible Materials

    Get PDF
Motivated by the prospective uses of plastically compressible materials such as, metallic and polymeric foams, transformation toughened ceramics, toughened structural polymers etc., the present authors investigate the crack-tip radius effect on fatigue crack growth (FCG) of a mode I crack and near-tip stress-strain fields in such plastically compressible solids. These plastically compressible materials have been characterised by elastic-viscoplastic constitutive equations. Simulations are conducted for plane strain geometry with two different hardness functions: one is bilinear hardening and the other one is hardening-softening-hardening. It has been observed that plastic compressibility as well as strain softening lead to significant deviation in the amount of crack growth. It has further been revealed that the nature of FCG is appreciably affected by initial crack-tip radius. Even though it may look from outside that the increase in tip radius will lead to decrease in FCG, but the nature of FCG variation with respect to tip radius is found to be a combined effect of tip radius, plastic compressibility and work or strain softening etc

Prediction of Moment Using a Modified Discrete Vortex Method in Ground Effect

    Get PDF
The aerodynamics around a wing is modified when it comes near the ground. This is generally referred to as ground effect. In this work, a discrete vortex method based model which can predict two-dimensional (2D) ground effect from its free flight data is proposed. The required data in free flight could be generated either from high fidelity CFD solver or experiments. In this method, strength of the vortex distribution as obtained from discrete vortex based method is modified using a constrained optimisation procedure to match the free flight aerodynamic data. This vortex distribution is further modified due the presence of the ground. The efficacy of present model is demonstrated for predicting the moment of multi element airfoils in ground effect. The predicted aerodynamic coefficient in ground effect compares well with high fidelity CFD data

Ships are an integral part of maritime traffic where they play both militaries as well as non-combatant roles. This vast maritime traffic needs to be managed and monitored by identifying and recognising vessels to ensure the maritime safety and security. As an approach to find an automated and efficient solution, a deep learning model exploiting convolutional neural network (CNN) as a basic building block, has been proposed in this paper. CNN has been predominantly used in image recognition due to its automatic high-level features extraction capabilities and exceptional performance. We have used transfer learning approach using pre-trained CNNs based on VGG16 architecture to develop an algorithm that performs the different ship types classification. This paper adopts data augmentation and fine-tuning to further improve and optimize the baseline VGG16 model. The proposed model attains an average classification accuracy of 97.08% compared to the average classification accuracy of 88.54% obtained from the baseline model

Real time Adaptive Approach for Hidden Targets Shape Identification using through Wall Imaging System

    Get PDF
In Through-wall Imaging (TWI) system, shape-based identification of the hidden target behind the wall made of any dielectric material like brick, cement, concrete, dry plywood, plastic and Teflon, etc. is one of the most challenging tasks. However, it is very important to understand that the performance of TWI systems is limited by the presence of clutter due to the wall and also transmitted frequency range. Therefore, the quality of obtained image is blurred and very difficult to identify the shape of targets. In the present paper, a shape-based image identification technique with the help of a neural network and curve-fitting approach is proposed to overcome the limitation of existing techniques. A real time experimental analysis of TWI has been carried out using the TWI radar system to collect and process the data, with and without targets. The collected data is trained by a neural network for shape identification of targets behind the wall in any orientation and then threshold by a curve-fitting method for smoothing the background. The neural network has been used to train the noisy data i.e. raw data and noise free data i.e. pre-processed data. The shape of hidden targets is identified by using the curve fitting method with the help of trained neural network data and real time data. The results obtained by the developed technique are promising for target identification at any orientation
