The penis sheath worn by older men is a remarkable piece of traditional attire. This simple yet significant garment is crafted from tanned sheepskin and extends into a short streamer. Its plain leather material reflects the wisdom and dignity of its wearer. This traditional attire, with its lack of elaborate adornments, symbolises the enduring connection between generations and serves as a reminder of the passage of time, embodying cultural tradition and heritage.Purchased from Mrs Joan BrosterForms part of: Walter Sisulu University Beadwork Collectio

Promoting Women’s Empowerment: Linkages Between Financial Development, Employment and Economic Growth in Selected African Economies

    Get PDF
Women’s empowerment (WE) is one of the main challenges to economic development in African countries. Scholars have criticised national development initiatives for focusing on well-being issues and treating women as the passive beneficiaries of welfare-enhancing assistance. This study uses panel fully modified least squares and vector error correction model to investigate the impact of interactive effects of WE and financial development (FD) on employment and economic growth based on the World Bank income group as follows: upper-middle-income countries (UMIC), lower-middle-income countries (LMIC), and low-income countries (LIC). The findings show that the interactive effects of WE and FD on output and employment are not significant in the long run in LMIC and LIC. Despite the significance of these interactive effects in UMIC, the coefficient is less than one. Also, the causality result in the UMIC shows feedback between WE and economic growth. And that FD has a direct influence on growth in LMIC, while WE has a direct influence on employment in LIC

Do Not Loose Your Patient in Translation: Using Interpreters Effectively in Primary Care

    Get PDF
South Africa is a multicultural society characterised by a rich diversity of languages. As a result, many healthcare providers and their patients often do not speak the same language, which makes communication challenging. The language barriers, when present, require an interpreter to ensure accurate and effective communication between the parties. In addition to assisting in a clear exchange of information, a trained medical interpreter also acts as a cultural liaison. This is especially true when the provider and the patient come from different cultural backgrounds. Based on the patient’s needs, preferences, and available resources, clinicians should select and engage with the most appropriate interpreter. The effective use of an interpreter requires knowledge and skill. Patients and healthcare providers can benefit from several specific behaviours during interpreter-mediated consultations. This review article provides practical tips on when and how to use an interpreter effectively during clinical encounters in primary healthcare settings in South Afric

Principals Leadership and Management Perspective on High School Violence: The South African Case Study

    Get PDF
The paper sought to explore solutions to revolutionary principal leadership practices for the next generation in contemporary African society. Despite the efforts done by the government, schools continue to be confronted with problems of disruptive behaviour by students and some disrespectful people from the society. The study targeted principals of the Libode Sub-district of OR Tambo District using the purposeful sampling technique. Data was qualitatively collected and the analysis was done thematically. The findings of the study revealed that regulations, acts, and rules set by the DoE are outdated and made it difficult for principals to maintain school discipline. The study further revealed that lack of resources, safety and security contribute to poor leadership practices, drug abuse, and safety leading to disruptive behavior (cases). Also, alternatives measure to corporal punishment in managing school discipline could not solve ill-discipline problems. This paper recommends that policy on drug abuse, safety and securityshould be revised. There should be also rethinking around the issue of better security and a need for a consolidated and coordinated system in schools

Strategies to Cope with Teachers Stress During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: A South African Case Study

    Get PDF
This article focuses on how teachers are coping with stress in their schools during and after COVID-19.Teachers’ work by nature is stressful having to deal with various aspects such as ensuring that lesson notes are completed, students are performing as they should, and handling paperwork. This iscombined with the lack of necessary resources to work efficiently. In their line of duty, teachers also face the dilemma of handling problematic behaviours of certain learners and there is a lot of work that must be done to protect teachers. The study adopted an interpretivism paradigm using the Social Cognitive Theoryin which thematically analysed data was collected through interviews from 15 purposely selected participants from Chris Hani East Education in South Africa(CHEDE). The analysis of data revealed that learners are using drugs, which leads to a change in their behaviour at school, something that negatively affects the learning process and the teachers themselves. It also emerged from the data analysis that teachers have a lot of paperwork to deal with, with insufficient resources, teachers can use, especially during the time of COVID-19. This study found that teachers used WhatsApp groups, church services, and family support to cope with stress during COVID-19. The article recommends that the Department of Basic Education employs security measures to handle safety and protect students and teachers from the effect of illicit drug usage on the premises of schools which increases the stress levels of teachers. New programmes and policies must be formulated to equip students with enough knowledge about the danger of using drugs. The Department of Basic Education must also supply all schools with devices that can be used by teachers for online teaching and learning to facilitate learning

Analysis of Discordance between Genotypic and Phenotypic Assays for Rifampicin-Resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis Isolated from Healthcare Facilities in Mthatha

    Get PDF
The study sought to determine the rate of discordant results between genotypic and phenotypic tests for the diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). Sputum samples and cultured isolates from suspected DR-TB patients were, respectively, analyzed for Mycobacterium tuberculosis by Xpert® MTB/RIF (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) and line probe assays (LPA) (Hain, Nehren, Germany). Discrepant rifampicin (RMP)-resistant results were confirmed using BACTEC MGIT960 (BD, New York, NY, USA). Of the 224 RMP-resistant results obtained by Xpert MTB/RIF, 5.4% were susceptible to RMP by LPA. MGIT960 showed a 75% agreement with LPA. The discrepancy was attributed to either heteroresistance or DNA contamination during LPA testing in 58.3% of cases. In 25% of the samples showing agreement in RMP resistance between Xpert MTB/RIF and MGIT960, the discrepancy was attributed to laboratory errors causing false RMP susceptible results with LPA. In 16.7% of the cases, the discrepancy was attributed to false RMP susceptible results with Xpert MTB/RIF. Out of the 224 isolates, susceptibility to isoniazid (INH) by LPA was performed in 73.7% RMP-resistant isolates, of which, 80.6% were resistant. All RMP-resistant isolates by Xpert MTB/RIF were confirmed in 98.5% by LPA if TB isolates were resistant to INH, but were only confirmed in 81.3% if TB isolates were susceptible to INH...

Combustion synthesis of nanocrystalline Ba1.3Ca0.7SiO4 semiconductors using urea as an energy efficient fuel

    Get PDF
The τ-phase Ba1.3Ca0.7SiO4 alkaline earth silicate powders were synthesized using the solution combustion technique. For this purpose, metal nitrate–urea mixtures were used as anoxidant and a fuel. Urea’s main function was to help lower the nominal combustion temperature (~550 ◦C) of the mixtures through exothermic reactions, leading to a relatively mild post-annealing temperature (~750 ◦C). If the urea concentration increased, the interconnected silicate particle size decreased with nanoscale crystallite (average, 33 ± 3 nm), affecting optical properties. Finally, the photoluminescence spectra suggested that the light emission was through trap sites, because the emitted blue and green lights (2.6 and 2.3 eV, respectively) were smaller than the bandgap (~3.2 eV) of the Ba1.3Ca0.7SiO4 semiconductor
