    Sound-evoked pupil dilation quantifies misophonic symptoms

    Misophonia is a debilitating disorder where seemingly innocuous sounds (often human made, such as chewing or throat clearing) evoke intense negative cognitive, emotional and physical “fight-or-flight” responses. Recent studies reported alarmingly high prevalence across different countries and population characteristics, revealing an urgent need for a better understanding of this condition as well as improved measurement and diagnostic tools. Firstly, current misophonia symptom measurements rely on (subjective) self-reports, and different studies employ various diagnostic approaches and cut-off scores. There is an urgent need for a complementary (objective) psychophysiological measurement tool. Secondly, the role of “mild” or “moderate” symptoms are currently topic of debate: are they still manifestations of the misophonic disorder? Here, we employ pupillometry to map out arousal responses to misophonia trigger sounds. We show that (i) pupil dilation can reliably differentiate misophonic responses from responses to generally unpleasant sounds (such as nails on chalk board), (ii) the “milder cases” of misophonia still show arousal responses characteristic of misophonia, and (iii) pupillometry can even be used to aid diagnosis in an individual; based on only pupil dilation, misophonic symptom severity could be reliably predicted at the level of a single individual. We conclude that even mild misophonic responses can reliably, objectively and cost-effectively be indexed by pupil-linked arousal

    South Korean Election Campaign Booklet and Party Statements Corpora

    This project contains two comprehensive text datasets from South Korean politics: the South Korean Election Campaign Booklet Corpus and the South Korean Party Statements Corpus. The Election Campaign Booklet Corpus comprises manifesto pamphlets from individual candidates who ran for offices in single-member or multi-member districts during six National Assembly elections, six local elections, and five Presidential elections in South Korea between 2000 and 2022. The corpus has 49,678 observations. The Party Statements Corpus contains official statements released by the two major political parties in South Korea from 2003 to 2022. The corpus comprises a total of 35,115 entries from the Conservative Party and 42,335 entries from the Progressive Party. The dataset was first made publicly available on September 13, 2024, and was subsequently updated on March 17, 2025, with new variables and previously missing observations.     Attractiveness cues to physical fitness across perceptual modalities

    Previous literature has shown positive associations between physical fitness, perceived attractiveness, and self-perception based on morphological, kinematic, and acoustic cues. However, these studies presented only a limited number of perceptual cues and modalities, either static visual representations of bodies or voice recordings and largely omitted olfaction. Even though rooted in literature, empirical evidence supporting the notion of congruency in attractiveness across modalities seems limited. Physical fitness was also frequently estimated by simplified measures of upper body isometric strength. Although correlated with other muscles' strength, it is not interchangeable with other fitness domains such as aerobic capacity or dexterity. This project, based on the zero-acquaintance paradigm (using thin slices of stimuli with different amounts of cues), aims to investigate how the available amount of static and dynamic visual, acoustic, and body odor cues affect judgments. Further, to explore congruency and the variability of attractiveness judgments, these cues explain. We also aim to comprehensively assess physical fitness and evaluate how different aspects of physical fitness (e.g., body composition, aerobic capacity, upper and lower body muscle strength, and flexibility) are associated with various aspects of physical attractiveness such as body, motion, vocal, and body odor attractiveness. Finally, we intend to explore agreement in self- and others-based attractiveness ratings and their relation to self-esteem and self-perception in the context of mate selection. This will also be examined in relation to physical fitness and body morphology measures. For this purpose, we will obtain complex and detailed physical fitness measurements and real-life size high-resolution and color-accurate movement video recordings and employ head-worn eye-tracking for rating, providing high levels of insight, fidelity, ecological validity, and replicability. The project is broken down into two phases. In Phase 1, we will collect stimuli and physical fitness measurements for rating collection in Phase 2. The aim of Phase 2 is to investigate how the perceived attractiveness of opposite-sex stimuli is affected by selected aspects of measured physical fitness and to test how the number of available cues affects the rating and congruency. We aim to: - Evaluate the relationship between various aspects of physical fitness (e.g., aerobic or isometric) and attractiveness perceived from various modalities. - Explore patterns of visual attention during attractiveness rating. - Test the relative contribution of different static and dynamic cues to the overall attractiveness judgments and congruency between ratings of different cues/modalities. - Test the association between self-perceived characteristics, physical fitness, and third-party-rated attractiveness

    Automated indexing of the biomedical literature in Medline: a scoping review [protocol].

    "The quality of automated indexing in Medline and its impact on information retrieval are topics of concern for health sciences librarians (HSLs) worldwide. Since 2002, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has pioneered automated and semi-automated indexing using the Medical Text Indexer, or MTI, to index publications. In 2022, new MEDLINE records were indexed using automated methods (MTIA), with human review for some subject areas, and other records reviewed randomly. In 2024, the MTIA was replaced by the next generation MTI called the MTIX. The aim of this review is to examine and analyze the key drivers, benefits and challenges of automated indexing in Medline, and its likely impact on the search practices of HSLs.
