The ICF Core Set for Deafblindness project
Deafblindness is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in the medical practice. Deafblind people are certified according to non-standardised indicators or based on each authority’s criteria. This situation allows a wide range of discriminatory practices affecting deafblind people worldwide.
The development of an international standard following the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (the World Health Organization WHO‘s framework to measure health and disability on an individual and population level) seems the right way to standardise the diagnosis.
Starting in 2020, we have developed research at a global level. The results of these investigations led to a consensus conference of experts from around the world in October 2024. At this consensus conference, 30 deafblindness professionals and experts by experience from all over the world met to discuss and decide on the final set of indicators to be presented to the WHO: The ICF COre Sets for Deafblindness
Show me the labels: Using pre-nudges to reduce calorie information avoidance
Calorie labeling is a popular policy to address the obesity epidemic, but it has had little empirical success. Under the premise that willful avoidance of information plays a role in this result, we propose a novel approach—pre-nudges—to make consumers more receptive to calorie information. Unlike nudges, which are used to directly influence a choice, pre-nudges are used to directly influence how consumers react to the nudge itself (the calorie label). In line with predictions from our theoretical analysis, we test two pre-nudges in the context of menu labeling: one aims to increase self-efficacy, and the other one highlights the long-term health risks of overeating. In a large-scale laboratory experiment, we find that both pre-nudges reduce calorie information avoidance. Overall, our paper suggests a possible role for pre-nudges in addressing the obesity epidemic—one of the largest public health issues globally—and illustrates the potential usefulness of pre-nudges more generall
Strategies of nutrition education for older adults with neurocognitive disorders and their informal caregivers: A scoping review protocol
This review aims to explore nutrition education strategies for older adults with neurocognitive impairments(NI) and their informal caregivers in all healthcare settings. Nutrition education enables older adults with neurocognitive impairment and their informal caregivers to manage their health autonomously. However, specific characteristics of NI, such as memory loss or anosognosia, make it difficult to implement education. Exploring strategies in nutrition education is needed to overcome these barriers, which will provide valuable insights for developing nutrition education in the NI field
The lifetime of sequential memory traces in the absence of language
Sequential statistical learning (SSL), the ability to detect sequential regularities in the environment, is a fundamental building block of many cognitive functions, from motor planning to language acquisition. Repetition is a major ingredient in this type of implicit learning, and here we study the effect of repetition spacing on the memory trace of a repeated sequence. To control for the use of verbal recoding strategies in sequence learning, we test a group of Guinea baboons in a Hebb visuo-motor pointing task. This task is a combination of the Serial Reaction Time task and the Hebb repetition paradigm, in which a target sequence is repeated with random sequences inserted between repetitions. In this study, we systematically manipulate the interval between two repetitions of a target sequence by varying the number of interposed random sequences (i.e., repetition spacing). We found that baboons can learn repeated visuo-motor sequences, even when the repetitions are spaced by six random sequences. Our results also suggest that the learning curve best fit a logarithmic function. The present study therefore provides a quantified estimate of the lifetime of a sequential memory trace as a function of repetition spacing and without the benefit of language-related refreshing and recoding strategies
Individual differences in speed–accuracy trade-off influence social decision-making in dyads
Speed–accuracy trade-offs are a fundamental aspect of decision-making, requiring individuals to balance collecting more information against making faster decisions. Although speed–accuracy trade-offs have been studied at the individual level, their role in human decision-making in social settings remains poorly understood—even though faster, and possibly more error-prone, decisions often have more social influence than slower decisions. We examined how individual differences in speed–accuracy trade-off preferences shape decision-making in pairs, using an interactive online experiment and drift–diffusion modeling. Participants first performed a perceptual task alone, allowing us to estimate their individual drift rates and decision thresholds, the key cognitive determinants of speed–accuracy trade-off preferences. They then performed the task in pairs, sharing decisions in real time. Pair accuracy depended on the faster (and thus more error-prone) member, and not on the slower (but more accurate) member. Social decisions were not worse than individual ones because faster members increased their thresholds in the social condition and became more accurate, while slower members incorporated less social information. These findings show that individuals adjusted their social information use to the speed–accuracy trade-off preferences of their partners, highlighting the importance of such individual differences for understanding social behavior
