    A framework to improve supply chain performance through lead time management in Ugandan public health institutions

    A well-organised public healthcare supply chain leads to easy accessibility of medical supplies. In order to have healthy populations, it is important for governments to have the required medical supplies in their healthcare facilities at the required time. As such, appropriate lead time management by supply chain actors greatly improves supply chain performance. However, the current public healthcare supply chains in Uganda have challenges that lead to poor quality and inefficient public health supply chain performance. The primary objective of this study was to develop an implementation framework to guide public health institutions in improving supply chain performance through lead time management in Uganda. The study also sought to determine the influence of supply chain optimisation on lead time management. It also sought to examine the influence of supply chain dynamic capabilities on lead time management. The study further examined the influence of supplier performance on lead time management, and sought to examine the influence of lead time management on supply chain performance. The study also sought to assess the mediating effect of lead time management on the relationship between supply chain dynamic capabilities and overall supply chain performance, between supply chain optimisation and overall supply chain performance, as well as between supplier performance and overall supply chain performance. Lastly, the study sought to assess the mediation effect of supply chain optimisation on the relationship between supplier performance and lead time management as well as between supply chain dynamic capabilities and lead time management. A positivist philosophy that allowed quantitative data to be collected from 340 respondents was used in this study. The study used both stratified sampling and simple random sampling without replacement to choose the public healthcare facilities as well as purposive sampling to select the final respondents for the study. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 25 for factor reduction and dimensional groupings. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) path analysis models were performed in the Analysis of Moments of Structure (AMOS Version 27) software for model fit assessments and hypotheses testing, respectively.     The impact of sustainable maintenance systems on government hospitals : a case of Cecilia Makewane and Frere hospitals

    This research sought to evaluate the current state of infrastructure maintenance put in place at government hospitals with a focus on Cecilia Makewane and Frere government Hospitals. These two hospitals served as examples of new infrastructure (Cecilia Makewane) and existing, older dilapidated hospital infrastructure (Frere) undergoing constant maintenance. The literature considered showed that in order for maintenance to be regarded as sustainable, it had to preserve the social, economic, and environmental conditions of a hospital building structure. The study aimed to provide insight into the existing state of maintenance and its sustainability. The sustainability of hospital infrastructure maintenance was tested by assessing the state of maintenance funding, maintenance workmanship, personnel skillsets, and maintenance policies. This study involved the collection of descriptive and numerical data through questionnaires. All of the information obtained through administering the questionnaires was converted into numerical data and used to gauge results. The results showed that there were shortfalls hindering sustainable maintenance, namely that the National Department of Health has failed to prioritise hospital maintenance funding and has failed to consistently monitor and evaluate hospital maintenance funding resulting in misuse and late compensation of maintenance contractors. The results also showed that the following existing successes would promote sustainable government hospital maintenance: satisfactory records of health infrastructure building deterioration are in place and maintenance projects involving refurbishments achieved practical completion and passed the latent defects liability periods. The study established that the available skilled staff are inadequate, hospital maintenance workmanship is poor, hospital maintenance projects were not adequately funded and existing maintenance processes were not regularly evaluated. The study recommends employment of more skilled maintenance staff, continuous monitoring, evaluation and prioritisation of maintenance funding, establishing clear maintenance roles between in-house staff and outsourced maintenance personnel.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology, 202

    The development of South African secondary school teachers to adopt a STEAM approach: A mixed method study

    Creativity is seen as one of the most important skills required for success in the 21st century and therefore teachers should set the example and become creative and innovative when skilfully applying their knowledge to teach. In STEAM, art is included in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) mix as a new innovative educational approach which is believed to increase creativity. The advantages of STEAM are widely accepted for a number of reasons and it has become very popular in countries that are known for their excellent mathematics performance, but it is unknown in most South African schools. Although a few studies have been done on STEAM in South Africa there is a lack of research on the professional development of mathematics teachers and the adoption of the STEAM approach in the mathematics classroom. This mixed methods study aims to determine the diffusion of the STEAM approach, and the influence of professional development on that diffusion and adoption in the South African Mathematics classroom. A convergent triangulation design was used in conjunction with a simultaneous quantitative and qualitative approach involving three different groups of participants. The quantitative approach concentrated on the hypothesis that secondary school mathematics teachers still embrace traditional teaching methods. The qualitative approach was directed towards answering the question on the knowledge and awareness of STEAM and the adoption of the innovation. The combination of two theories, namely Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations and Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory were found to provide the most suitable framework to describe the process in the findings. The instrument used in the quantitative approach was an online questionnaire and in qualitative approach the data was collected using interviews, assignments and questionnaires. It was found that although Mathematics teachers are open to learning about innovations, they still rely on traditional teaching methods. Teachers recognise the advantages of STEAM and want to use it but feel constrained by the curriculum, the pressure to perform and a lack of resources. Short activities that are curriculum based are welcomed and used by the teachers. However, they struggle to set up their own iii activities and then abandon the idea. In addition, they are not comfortable with projects involving teachers from other disciplines or including art activities in a mathematics lesson. The adoption of STEAM becomes much easier if there is a strong professional learning community and support from school management. The positive reactions of the learners on the STEAM activities motivate the teachers to adopt the approach. The diffusion of STEAM into the mathematics classroom is not instant but takes an average of two to three years. This time factor should be taken into consideration when planning a professional development programme. The programme should include scaffolding to assist teachers to become confident in using STEAM activities but also in using technology which is the key to finding and using new activities.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, 202

    The relationship between savings and economic growth in Southern African customs union (sacu) countries

    This study empirically investigates the nature of the relationship between savings and economic growth in SACU member countries, namely: South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Eswatini, using panel data for the period 1990-2021. A high savings rate is believed to be instrumental in stimulating economic growth, making it vital is for policy makers to understand the nature of the relationship existing between savings and economic growth in order to design and implement appropriate policies. To ensure robustness of the empirical results, this study applied different panel data estimation procedures. Using Pooled OLS, Random Effect, Fully Modified OLS, Dynamic OLS and Mean Group, Pool Mean Group and Dynamic Fixed Effect, the study discovered that gross domestic savings have a positive impact on economic growth among SACU member countries. Based on the results, gross domestic savings emerged with different coefficients indicating sensitivity to the estimation technique although statistically significant. Furthermore, the study dealt with the issue of linearity in the savings-growth nexus, by estimating the threshold level. Estimated results reveal evidence that gross domestic savings above 16 percent threshold have a negative effect on economic growth, while below the threshold, level savings impact economic growth positively. The study recommends, among other things, that policy makers design and implement policies that promote financial inclusion to mobilise domestic savings so as to increase economic growth.     Traditional birth attendants’ perceptions of their role in caring for women during childbirth in the Nyandeni sub-district

    The role of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) has been within remote communities for a long time. TBAs remain a major health resource in rural communities in developing countries as well as in some parts of urban areas. South Africa is a long way from effectively utilising TBAs as a community resource to enhance access to maternity services. This qualitative study, with an explorative, contextual, and descriptive design, included ten (n=12) TBAs aged between 38 and 56 years who met the inclusion criteria and were interviewed for the study. The objective of the study was to explore and describe TBAs’ perceptions of their role in caring for women during childbirth in the Nyandeni Sub-district. Data for this study was collected using face-to- face and individual semi-structured interviews, and field notes. Recorded data was transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged, namely: TBAs perceive their role in caring for women as an essential service to women in the community; they believe that they possess the knowledge to conduct deliveries safely; and acknowledge that collaboration with the Department of Health could strengthen rural midwifery services.Thesis (Ma) -- Faculty of Health Science, 202

    Knowledge, attitudes and practices of municipal workers regarding occupational health and safety in the garden route district municipality, Western Cape

    Background: Workers accidents at work have been demonstrated to be increasingly common and expensive, particularly in developing nations like South Africa. The failure of employers and employees to support and comply to (OHS) regulations measures frequently leads to injuries and accidents that are extremely expensive for both the employer and employees. Regardless of South African legislations that aim to prevent accidents and injuries, scourging statistics of industrial accidents are still a characteristic of OHS. Objectives: This study investigates knowledge gaps, attitude, and the practice of municipal workers regarding OHS at Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Methodology: Quantitative approach was taken, and questionnaires were administered to 188 workers employed by the GRDM. A probability sampling method of stratified sampling method was utilised. Results: This study concluded that the workers of the GRDM are knowledgeable about OHS in their workplaces and that municipal workers positively perceive OHS issues in their workplaces. The main reason for this positive perception is because of the management support that the workers receive from the GRDM with regards to OHS matters. Furthermore most workers positively perceived OHS protocols and measures undertaken at the GRDM. Statistical tests proved that the municipal workers who positively perceived OHS protocols and measures were significantly higher (p< 0.05) than those that negatively perceived OHS protocols. Conclusion: The study revealed that GRDM workers were knowledgeable on OHS protocols. This was because of the support that they get from their employer as well as personal health and safety concerns. They positively perceived the OSH measures that are put in place to prevent accidents and injuries. It is only an insignificant percentage of individuals that disagreed with some of the OHS measures and protocols. This study contributes immeasurably to academic research in the field of OHS and extends knowledge that relates workers’ perceptions, safety awareness, as well as workers’ adherence to safety and behaviour.Thesis (Ma) -- Faculty of Health Science, 202

    Exploring the psychological and emotional understanding of Amagqirha within the Eastern Cape province, South Africa

    Indigenous knowledge systems influence mental health understanding and treatments. Amongst the Xhosa’s (amaXhosa), a person may receive a ‘calling’ from the ancestors, usually associated with symptoms that would be characterized as a mental illness. However, the symptoms experienced during the calling, usually dissipate once training has been received. One of the categories within traditional healers are amagqirha, also known as diviners. These are individuals who receive the ‘calling’. Thereafter, they undergo extensive training and become blessed with clairvoyant “powers” to divine and act as mediators between the living and the dead. This study aimed to explore the psychological and emotional understanding of amagqirha of the Xhosa culture, within the Eastern Cape, South Africa. In doing so, the study centralizes the experiences of individuals within cultural spaces, allowing for commentary on the psychological and emotional understanding of the amagqirha. Furthermore, this study focused on the work that amagqirha do in communities and how this ultimately affects them. This study sought to understand the experiences and perceptions of the individuals who are affected by this ‘calling’. The researcher employed a qualitative method with an exploratory-descriptive research design. Ten participants were recruited by utilizing a purposive snowball sampling strategy. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview due to the sensitivity of the demographic of the study. Ethics were adhered to. Additionally, trustworthiness was guided by Lincoln and Guba’s (1985) four constructs: credibility, dependability, transferability, and confirmability. Thematic analysis was used as a means of data analysis, as presented by Braun and Clarke (2006). The themes identified were: The collateral damage/profuse repercussions cast upon by the ancestors due to inaction (either by them or those that case before them), the severity of the emotional and psychological effects is equally prevalent prior and during their journey of vi ubugqirha, methods that may assist in alleviating the emotional and psychological symptoms, understanding of mental health, awareness of their own mental health status, and help-seeking (psychological services). The main findings suggested that there is a general understanding of the term ‘mental health’ amongst amagqirha. Additionally, the findings revealed that amagqirha experienced emotional and psychological symptoms/effects, prior to and during the journey of ubugqirha - these were due to the lack of understanding and fear. Furthermore, the findings suggesting that amagqirha embarked on various help-seeking measures, i.e., seeking psychological services or leaning into seeking guidance from their ancestors. However, they were met with barriers as well, i.e., finding a mental health practitioner with awareness on African spirituality, and dealing with the stigma that comes with help-seeking.Thesis (Ma) -- Faculty of Health Science, 202

    Characterization of the coastal Aquifer of Gqeberha, South Africa : Developing a conceptual understanding

    The aquifer systems in Gqeberha are poorly understood due to a lack of groundwater studies within the area, and this is particularly the case for the coastal aquifer of Gqeberha. Amidst the water crisis the city is currently facing, groundwater has become crucial, with over 1000 boreholes reportedly drilled in the coastal area, most of which are residential. This has resulted in the need to conduct more groundwater studies in the area and in Nelson Mandela Bay. This study presents a detailed hydrogeological characterization of the coastal aquifer of Gqeberha. This was achieved through the use of different techniques, which include field mapping, geophysics, hydrochemistry, and pumping test analysis. The work was done on the coastal seeps of the Algoa Group Formation and the fractured aquifer of the Peninsula Formation. The results through mapping indicated an abundance of folds, faults, and fractures which all have implications for groundwater flow. The majority of fractures are striking in the NE-SW and NW-SE directions. The pumping test analysis also indicated fractal flow with significant matrix flow resulting in a dual porosity system up to at least 200m in depth. The transmissivity and storativity values range from 6.78 – 44.5 m2/day and 0.0172 – 0.0325, respectively. This is highly dependent on the fracture interconnectivity, which varies across the area and is higher at shallow depths, as suggested by the geophysical profiles. Geophysical profiles indicate that the contact between the Algoa Group Formations and the Peninsula Formation results in coastal seeps due to the difference in hydraulic conductivities. The hydrochemical analysis suggests that the seeps generally have Na-Cl and Ca-Mg-Cl water types. The groundwater in the eastern area has a Ca-HCO3 water type, and the groundwater in the western region has a Ca-Mg-Cl water type, with the Chelsea-Noordhoek Fault system separating the two groundwater signatures. Groundwater at greater depths has a Na-Cl water type with higher TDS values. The chemical signatures seen are due to external factors, which include sea sprays, anthropogenic activities, rock-water processes, and possibly connate water in the Peninsula Formation aquifer. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the present conditions of the aquifer in Gqeberha.     The moderating influence of socioemotional wealth on the innovation choices and outputs of South African family businesses

    The global impact of family businesses is increasing in a significant manner. The importance of family businesses has been recognised by academic institutions through the establishment of family business research centres and academic programmes for family businesses, as well as practitioner-oriented journals in family business studies. In most developed and developing market economies, family businesses have been projected as one of the primary forms of private enterprise that play an important role in both national and global economies, including South Africa. In other words, in the global innovation context, family businesses are considered to be the backbone of economic development. Given the importance of innovation to family businesses in contributing to economic growth and sustainability across generations, as well as the limited research that has been conducted on South African family businesses and innovation, the primary objective of this research was to investigate the relationship of selected drivers of innovation and Innovation outputs in South-African family businesses, as well as how the family, through its Socioemotional wealth, moderates the relationships between the drivers of innovation and Innovation outputs. This study uses the socioemotional wealth (SEW) and the resource-based theory (RBV) as the basis of its theoretical orientation. The following drivers of innovation were identified during the literature review (independent variable), namely: Financial capital, Human capital and leadership, Social capital, Learning orientation, Entrepreneurial orientation, Market orientation, Organisational culture, and Knowledge management as having an impact on Innovation outputs (dependent variable). In addition, Socioemotional wealth (SEW) was hypothesised as having a moderating influence on the relationships between the drivers of innovation and Innovation ouptuts. Four demographic variables (Size of the business, Age of the business, Generation of the family and Industry of operation) were identified as having a potential influence on the hypothesised relationships. Each of the constructs were clearly defined and then operationalised. Operationalisation was done by using reliable and valid items sourced from tested vii measuring instruments used in previous studies, as well as a number of self-generated items based on secondary sources. A structured questionnaire was made available online to respondents identified by means of the convenience snowball sampling technique, and data was collected from 331 family businesses in South Africa. The usable questionnaires were subjected to various data analyses techniques. Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) were performed on each factor that confirms the factor structures by using various goodness-of-fit indices. Subsequent to the CFAs, the validity and reliability of the measuring instrument was assessed. As a result of these analyses, three new independent variables emerged as drivers of Innovation outputs in South African family businesses, namely: Funding of research and innovation, Financial, human and social capital resources, and Shared business vision, resources information and knowledge. In addition the SEW construct revealed two dimensions as dependant variables, namely: Family influence, control and commitment and Business reputation and commitment. The reliability of the measuring instrument was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, while the assessment of validity involved calculations of the average variance extracted (AVE) estimates and squared correlations between constructs. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was the main statistical procedure used to test the significance of the relationships hypothesised between the various independent, moderating and dependent variables. The main finding of the study reveals that there is a significant positive relationship between Financial, human and social capital resources, and Innovation outputs. There is also a significant positive relationship between Shared business vision, resources, information and knowledge and Innovation outputs. Furthermore, Family influence, control and commitment positively moderates the relationship between Shared business vision, resources, information and knowledge and Innovation outputs. while Business reputation and succession positively moderates the relationship between Financial, human, social capital resources, and Innovation outputs. Finally, Business reputation and succession positively moderates the relationship between Shared business vision, resources, information and knowledge viii and Innovation outputs. Concerning the selected demographic variables, this study found that Age of the business has a significant influence on Innovation outputs. This study makes several theoretical and practical contributions. This study is the first of its kind that investigates the relationship between the drivers of innovation and Innovation outputs of South African family businesses. Second, this study is the first to investigate how the family, through its Socioemotional wealth, moderates the relationships between the drivers of innovation and Innovation outputs of South African family businesses. Having a better understanding of how and when the family system impacts the innovation decisions in the family business is important because it helps researchers understand the differences between family businesses (i.e. family firm heterogeneity) and non-family businesses. Third, the findings indicated that the adaptation of the SEW and RBV theories was accurate in understanding how the family, through its socioemotional wealth, influences innovation decisions. Fourth, concerning the selected demographic variables, this study found that Age of the business has a significant influence on Innovation outputs. This finding is another valuable contribution to the literature on innovation, given the inconsistent and sometimes inconclusive findings concerning the relationship between age of the business and innovation activities. The study's final theoretical contribution is the development of a measurement tool that accurately assesses the drivers of innovation and innovation outputs and the influence of the five dimensions of socioemotional wealth. Other family business researchers, business mentors and or family business owners themselves can use this measurement tool to assess and monitor factors that have an impact on innovation activities inside their businesses.     The design and synthesis of novel fluorescent coumarin-based derivatives as chemosensors for the application of toxic metal ion detection

    The rise of humankind has caused pollution, increasing damage to the environment. The actions of humans over hundreds of years have led to an increase in the release of heavy metal cations in concentrations that are toxic to plants, animals and humans. These toxic metals can find their way into humans’ diets through water sources or bioaccumulation in plants and animals such as fish. Heavy metals such as lead and mercury are known to cause serious health issues when consumed, affecting the functioning of the circulatory and nervous systems and causing developmental disorders. Other metal cations, such as iron and copper, can be found in the human body. However, detrimental health issues can occur when normal concentrations are disturbed (either too high or too low). Iron, for example, can be toxic if in excess in the human body, causing damage to the liver and heart and can cause neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Many methods have been employed to detect and measure the concentrations of toxic metal cations. However, these methods are performed in a laboratory and need skilled operators using expensive equipment. This results in long and tedious sample collection, long feedback time and costly analysis. Chemosensors have been researched and proposed as a cost-effective, on-site, real-time alternative for use as metal detectors. Chemosensors can selectively detect specific metal cations and can be sensitive up to the nanomolar range. Various chemosensors have been synthesised and screened for their colourimetric and fluorometric abilities. Colourimetric chemosensors can be used to visually detect cationic and anionic analytes, whereas fluorometric chemosensors are used to detect anions using their emission properties which handheld devices can measure. Herein several novel compounds are synthesised and tested for their chemosensor abilities. Schiff base chemosensors were designed and synthesised in good yields. S4 displayed a colour change from clear to blue in the presence of Cu2+. However, this colour change needed up to 25 minutes to develop fully and thus could not be used as a real-time chemosensor. The colourimetric chemosensor S10 can characteristically identify Cu2+, Ni2+, and Fe2+, each inducing a different complex colour, blue-green, yellow, and red, respectively. Competition studies were performed for each cation, and it was determined that S10 was not selective for the three cations tested. S10 had a slight preference for Cu2+ followed by Ni2+ and least for Fe2+. Real-world studies indicated that using paper strips, S10 could also identify Cu2+ and Fe2+. Investigation into mixed ligand chemosensors was conducted. Metal complexes are known to complex with a variety of solvents. In nanoscience, mixed-ligand magnetic nanoparticles can be used for different applications, such as enhanced sensing, binding multiple analytes, and system stability. E2 was compared to the mix-ligand solution E6, which contains E2 and o-anisaldehyde. Absorbance studies indicated that E6 was more selective than E2, but fluorescence studies indicated that o-anisaldehyde affected the emission spectrum. Further studies into E2 showed that E2 was highly selective for the 1:1 E2-Fe2+ complex. Reversibility studies revealed that the E2-Fe2+ was partially reversible using EDTA and H2O2. However, real-world application studies, unfortunately, showed that analytes present in the water samples interfered with complexation, and the concentrations could not be determined. Two novel coumarin-based dimers were designed and synthesised. D1 and D2 were investigated for their fluorometric chemosensor abilities for the detection of cations. D1 had a maximum absorption band at 487 nm, whereas D2 had no absorbance spectra. Cation screening was performed in acetonitrile for both D1 and D2. D1 functioned as an “on-off” chemosensor in the presence of Cu2+. D2 was examined for its “off-on” chemosensor abilities, and no significant change in the emission spectra was observed. Competition studies showed that D1 was not selective towards Cu2+ in the presence of competing metals. Reversibility studies indicate that D1-Cu2+ was not reversible in the presence of EDTA, sodium ascorbate, and cyanide. Real-world application studies, unfortunately, showed that impurities in the water samples interfered with the complexation of D1-Cu2+, and the concentrations could not be accurately determined. Lastly, thionation reactions were attempted on ethyl-8-ethoxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3- carboxylate, T1. The thio analogue ethyl-8-ethoxy-2-thioxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylate, T2, was successfully synthesised using Lawesson’s reagent. The substitution was observed in the 1H and 13C NMR. Molecular modelling was employed to illustrate the electrostatic changes that transpired due to thiocarbonyl’s presence. Furthermore, cationic screening studies indicated that T1 and T2 interacted with Fe2+. Additionally, T2 uniquely interacted with Hg2+, leading to the possibility of using T2 for the detection of Hg2+ in the presence of other metal ions.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, School of Biomolecular & Chemical Sciences, 202
