    An alternative model for the financial sustainability of social services sector NGOs in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

    The work of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) is traditionally deemed “unprofitable”, yet they provide valuable services to communities. With an exponentially growing NGO sector of more than 270 000 NGOs, of which 40% are social service sector NGOs, and an increased demand for NGO services, a decrease in government and donor funding has heightened the debate on the need for financial sustainability of NGOs in South Africa. NGOs are important development actors, and their financial sustainability is crucial as it ensures that the sector continues to be relevant and effective in ensuring that social needs are met. Using a mixed methods sequential explanatory research design, the study focused on the social services sector NGOs in the Eastern Cape with the aim of understanding their financial challenges and strategies being employed to address such and, in the process, develop an alternative model for the financial sustainability of these NGOs. A conceptual framework was developed from six theories which were used to explore the concept of financial sustainability drawing insights from the internal and external environment of the participating NGOs. These theories were used together to emphasise that no one theory could single-handedly and holistically explain the concept of the financial sustainability of social service sector NGOs. The use of multiple theories also came from the realisation that NGOs in South Africa, in general, are struggling to survive owing to a myriad of factors which include increased competition for resources and reduced funding from their traditional source. Furthermore, donor dependency, staff and organisational capacity, management practices and values, and the interplay of an NGO with its stakeholders and environment all have a bearing on financial sustainability. Being the poorest province in South Africa heightens the need for social services in the Eastern Cape. From the study, it was established that 48% of social services sector NGOs depended on government funding while only 16% had the capacity to generate their own income. However, depending on government funding was not sustainable and this was crippling the social services sector. The study also established that “young” NGOs struggled to secure funding when compared to their “mature” counterparts. In addition, staff capacity and the values of an organisation affected income generation and how funds were sourced. Lack of capacity to fundraise and/or implement commercial activities had affected the financial sustainability of the social sector NGOs. The interplay of an NGO and its stakeholders and environment also had a bearing on the financial sustainability of the sector. The study provides a multipronged approach and perspective to financial sustainability. The proposed financial sustainability model challenges social services sector NGOs to consciously reflect on their internal and external environments as well a come up with strategies that positively affect their financial sustainability. From the study, the strategies that were being implemented to realise financially sustainability included, retaining current donors, reaching out to new donors, innovative fundraising approaches, redesigning programme activities to include cost-recovery components, collaborating with other NGOs as well as commercial ventures. This study concludes that social services sector NGOs need all these approaches in addition to improving staff capacity and adopting a culture that enhances organisational performance.     Psychobiographical study of Daisy De Melker

    Daisy Louisa C. de Melker, born on 1 June 1886, was a qualified nurse who is famously known to have poisoned two husbands with strychnine in order to receive life insurance money while living in Turffontein, Johannesburg. Later on, she poisoned her only son with arsenic for reasons which are still unclear, and he passed away soon after. She is notoriously known in history to be the second woman to have been hanged in South Africa due to receiving the death penalty. The primary aim of the study is to explore the life of de Melker to gain an understanding of her personality development, with the aim of acquiring insight into the motivation behind her behaviour. The secondary aim includes exploring apparent Cluster B personality traits. The study is exploratory-descriptive in nature and the subject was chosen through purposive sampling. The study uses a qualitative, psycho-biographical, single-case research design to study De Melker, in order to explore and describe the personality development of her from the theoretical perspectives of Kernberg’s Object Relations Theory. This specific theory was chosen as it allowed the researcher to explore Daisy de Melker’s early childhood and upbringing that impacted the formation of ‘internal representations’ of herself and other people. The theory suggests that when there is a lack of integration of object relations, which is made up of internal and external representations, it may result in the development of a personality disorder, as it places a focus on relationships being more crucial to personality development than individual drives and abilities. Data was collected by triangulating multiple sources of information. Miles and Huberman’s (1994) strategy were used to analyse the data according to three steps, which include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification.     Study on the Isixhosa elder’s perspective on mental illness in buffalo city municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa

    Generally, the elders in the family are usually responsible for their families, including the care and socialisation of younger members. With the increasing number of mental illness cases being reported, not only in South Africa but the rest of the world, it is imperative to explore what the elderly understand about mental illnesses, given that they may have insights that might be useful. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of elderly members in the isiXhosa community of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape province, regarding their understanding of mental illnesses. The researcher employed an exploratory-descriptive, qualitative design and adopted Lincoln and Guba’s model of trustworthiness. Participants were recruited through the use of snowball and purposive sampling and the data was gathered through one-on-one interviews conducted with elderly isiXhosa individuals. Thematic analysis was used as a means of data analysis, by following data analysis method by Braun and Clarke. The following themes were identified during the study; Limited understanding about mental illness, varied causes of mental illness and a generationally linked understanding of mental illness. The findings reflected the participants understanding of what mental illness is and the causes of it and suggest that more research is required to understand the cultural influences on perceptions of mental illness.Thesis (Ma) -- Faculty of Health Science, 202

    Effects of annealing on the structural and optical properties of nanostructured TiO2

    In this thesis, the structural, morphological and optical properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are investigated. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes are prepared by anodic oxidation of titanium foil. The as-anodised samples are thermally annealed at various temperatures in nitrogen, air, oxygen and vacuum. The purpose is to study how the annealing conditions affect the properties of the nanostructures, including the anatase to rutile phase transformation. In all annealing atmospheres, except in vacuum, the dominant phase is found to be anatase when annealing is performed up to 600 oC. Above 700 oC the rutile phase becomes dominant. The anatase phase is stable above 600 oC in vacuum and does not evolve significantly up to 900 oC. The morphologies of the tubes tend to deteriorate with increased annealing temperature, in nitrogen, air and oxygen atmospheres, due to sintering effects. However, the integrity of the nanotubes is maintained up to 900 oC in vacuum. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra suggest mainly the presence of oxygen vacancies and self-trapped excitons, with respective emission bands around 2.5 eV and 2.3 eV. The results show that both the annealing temperature and atmosphere strongly influence the crystalline and optical properties of the TiO2 nanotubes. In addition, the phase transformation from anatase to rutile for samples annealed in an oxygen-rich environment is investigated in detail. Complementary structural information obtained from transmission electron microscopy and Raman analysis for oxygen-annealed samples reveals that the nucleation of the rutile phase starts from the titanium substrate and then propagates along the tubes. The results provide suitable annealing conditions to control the phase content and morphology of anodic TiO2 nanotubes. The PL characteristics of bulk crystalline anatase TiO2, namely virgin and hydrogen-annealed at 600 oC for 1 h, are studied. The low temperature PL spectra at 5.5 K shows near band edge (NBE) emissions with two dominant lines ascribed to shallow donor bound exciton and possibly free to bound recombination. The two main transitions are assisted by optical phononmodes. Temperature-dependent PL measurements performed on these anatase crystals reveal that the donor bound exciton is stable below 90 K. Hydrogen trapped in oxygen vacancies is proposed to be the shallow donor. In addition, two activation processes are involved for the thermal quenching of donor bound excitons. The total activation energy is found to correlate well with the localisation energy of the bound exciton. Site-selective PL spectra obtained from anodic TiO2 tubes reveals that the luminescence of the nanostructures depends on the morphology. The result shows unusual near-band edge emission (NBE) for these structures, which is rarely observed in indirect band gap TiO2.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, School of Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, 202

    Enhancing employee engagement and wellbeing whilst implementing remote working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the way in which companies conduct their operations. Companies that were characterised by centralised brick and mortar offices had to quickly adapt to a remote work setting to ensure the continuation of operations. This has created difficulties in ensuring that operations continue as per normal without impacting productivity and profitability. Employees are key to organisations in ensuring that a competitive advantage is maintained and achieved. Competitors will be able to copy products, service and processes but they will find it difficult in duplicating the manner in which their employees conduct their daily work activities. Employee engagement and well-being were key for successful organisations pre-COVID-19 in differentiating themselves from competitors. The aim of this study is to assist companies in identifying the drivers of employee engagement and their impact on well-being whilst implementing a remote work setting. The study will more specifically investigate a proposed theoretical model towards increasing employee engagement and well-being. The model proposed that employee engagement and well-being will be impacted by conciliation, cultivation, confidence, compensation and communication. The empirical component of the study was conducted by administering an electronic survey to 110 employees. The survey was administered to a private company that has a national footprint in South Africa. The main findings of this study confirmed that the factors proposed in the model will have a significant impact on employee engagement and that employee engagement will impact well-being. The study found additional variables such as communication personal, communication infrastructure, employer care and intrusion of work into private life that will impact employee engagement. Furthermore, it was found that all the drivers will influence employee well-being. The findings found that employee engagement and well-being will be interdependent on each other.     An assessment of the effectiveness of waste management in the Nelson Mandela municipality

    Waste management is an essential service that municipalities provide to residents. The preservation of public health and the continued safety and well-being of both people and the environment, are both supported by good waste management methods. It has become necessary to evaluate present waste management strategies to ensure that they are still effective, due to the rise in solid waste brought on by the growth and development of communities. The primary objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of waste management in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The study was conducted using a qualitative phenomenological approach. A total of 10 participants were chosen for the study and in-depth interviews were used as data collection tool to accomplish the objectives of the study. The qualitative data analysis tool Atlas TI was employed for data analysis to present emerging themes from the collected data. The findings of the study established that a lack of adequate resources presented a challenge to the municipality to provide effective waste management. The role of education and awareness was revealed to play a major role in ensuring that the public is well-informed about waste management. The study recommended that current waste management strategies be reviewed, and new policies be implemented. Finally, constant communication between residents and the municipality is needed to combat issues in neighbourhoods. The recommendations proposed in this study could be used as a possible guide to assist policy makers when reviewing and developing waste strategies.     A Protection of Personal Information Act Compliance Framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market.

    The Protection of Personal Information Act of 2013 (POPIA) is a law drafted to regulate the processing of personal information in South Africa. Its provisions include but are not limited to the usage of personal information for marketing purposes. While it was announced that enforcement of the law would commence in July 2021, many organisations are still in the process of reorganising themselves to comply with this important piece of legislation. Although the Information Regulator’s guideline document is available for utilization, organisations are struggling to develop POPIA compliance frameworks tailored to their operational requirements. As stated in section 6.2.1 of the Information Regulator’s guideline document, the act calls for the appointment of the an Information Officer by organisations who is required to develop, implement, monitor and maintain a POPIA compliance, framework. With that stated, this study aims to reports about developing a POPIA compliance framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market. The study’s primary objective was to develop a POPIA compliance framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market (TFPM) as a collector and processor of personal information. The study had three sub-objectives which were achieved using three research methods, namely literature review, content analysis and semi-structured interviews. Through a literature review, conditions that should be adhered to in relation to collecting and processing personal information were identified. Shifting the focus to the second sub-objective, a vigorous content analysis was performed to investigate the TFPM’s current method of collecting and processing personal information. The process involved evaluating the TFPM’s SOPs, Service Level Agreement, License Agreement, and the city of Tshwane’s Information Communication Technology Framework using the Nexia POPIA checklist. The evaluation results revealed a huge non-compliance gap with regard iii to POPIA and personal information conditions.     An investigation of alternative separation strategies for common chemical mixtures by means of host-guest chemistry protocols with host compounds N,N′- bis(5-phenyl-5-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenyl)ethylenediamine and N,N’-bis(5-phenyl-10,11- dihydro-5-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenyl)ethylenediamine

    In this work, the selectivity behaviour of two host compounds, namely N,N’-bis(5-phenyl-5- ibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenyl)ethylenediamine (H1) and N,N’-bis(5-phenyl-10,11-dihydro-5- ibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenyl)ethylenediamine (H2), was assessed in mixtures of difficult-toseparate compounds, including the xylenes and ethylbenzene, pyridine and methylpyridines, and anisole and methylanisoles. These host compounds were synthesized using Grignard addition reactions with phenylmagnesium bromide on dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5-one and 10,11- dihydrodibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5-one, respectively. The resultant alcohols were treated with perchloric acid to form the corresponding perchlorate salts, which were then reacted with ethylenediamine to afford the required H1 and H2 host compounds. Yields were 95 ad 52% for this final step in each case. An investigation of the conformations, both from experiment (using single crystal X-ray diffractometry (SCXRD) on the apohost compound) and computational calculations was undertaken. Unfortunately, H1 always crystallized out as a powder unless this host compound formed a complex with a guest species, and so could not be subjected to SCXRD analysis as apohost alone. However, a single crystal structure for apohost H2 was successfully obtained and compared with computational data from a previous investigation. It was observed that the conformation of apohost H2 compared favourably with that of the lowest energy conformer from that work. In single solvent recrystallization experiments with o-, m-, p-xylene (o-Xy, m-Xy, p-Xy) and ethylbenzene (EB), both H1 and H2 formed complexes with only one of the four guest species, namely p-Xy and o-Xy, respectively. The host:guest (H:G) ratios were 1:1 for both of these complexes. In the equimolar guest/guest competition experiments, inclusion complexes only formed when p-Xy or o-Xy, respectively, were present in the mixtures; if p-Xy (for experiments with H1) or o-Xy (H2) was absent from these mixtures, only apohost was recovered from the glass vessels. Three selectivity profiles were constructed for each of these host compounds, in which each one was recrystallized from binary mixed guests in various proportions. These demonstrated an overwhelming preference of H1 for p-Xy and H2 for o-Xy, which concurred with the results from the equimolar experiments. Thermal analysis using H1∙p-Xy revealed that this complex was unstable at ambient conditions, while SCXRD explained this observation: this complex may be defined as a true clathrate since no host‧‧‧guest interactions were identified at all, and the guest was retained in the complex by means of steric factors alone. Furthermore, the guest molecules resided in wide open channels that may have facilitated the guest release process. H2∙o-Xy, on the other hand, was stable at room temperature, and the guest release event only commenced at 69.7 °C (Ton). This too was explained by SCXRD analyses in that interactions between host and guest species were observed in this case. Additionally, the guest molecules were housed in discrete cages, which made their escape more challenging compared with p-Xy in H1∙p-Xy. It was concluded that, in this guest series, both of the host compounds would be effective as separatory tools employing host-guest chemistry protocols due to their remarkable selectivities for p-Xy (H1) and o-Xy (H2).Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, 202

    An evaluation of the effectiveness of area-based conservation interventions in avoiding biodiversity loss in South Africa

    Counterfactual impact evaluation studies form an important evidence base for the effectiveness of conservation projects, programs, and policies (collectively referred to as conservation interventions). In South Africa, counterfactual impact evaluation methods have rarely been applied to local conservation interventions, and therefore evidence for the effectiveness of key strategic national conservation approaches is lacking. This study evaluated three area-based interventions that together aim to avoid the loss of areas most important for the persistence of biodiversity in the terrestrial realm as evidence towards the effectiveness of South Africa’s landscape approach to biodiversity conservation. The first intervention, South Africa’s National Protected Area Expansion Strategy (NPAES), set ambitious targets to double the extent of South Africa’s protected area network while ensuring that the expansion preferentially occurs in areas of under-represented biodiversity. The strategy was evaluated in terms of its effectiveness in guiding protected area expansion towards more equitable representation of South Africa’s biodiversity through an assessment of changes in indicators of protected area expansion decision-making before and after the implementation of the strategy. The second intervention is the use of maps of biodiversity priorities to guide land use change decisions outside protected areas. Impact was evaluated as avoided loss of Critical Biodiversity Areas (CBAs), which need to remain in a natural condition to meet in situ conservation targets for species, ecosystems, and ecological processes. Avoided loss in CBAs was benchmarked against avoided loss in protected areas, to contextualize the effectiveness of land use planning as a conservation intervention. Lastly, the effectiveness of stricter land use regulations for threatened ecosystems to reduce land conversion pressure on these ecosystems was evaluated. Key findings were that protected areas are highly effective conservation interventions where they can be implemented, but their capacity for conservation impact is limited by severe constraints on strategic expansion.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 202

    The knowledge of registered nurses regarding the management of patients with diabetes mellitus in the primary health care clinics in Nelson Mandela Bay Health District

    Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic condition caused by inherited and/or acquired deficiency in the production of insulin or the ineffectiveness of the pancreas to produce insulin. DM is classified into general categories: type 1, type 2, gestational and non-specific types of diabetes mellitus and is considered a manageable disease, requiring lifestyle modification and medicinal treatment. DM is a global challenge, and its incidence is expected to increase in the next decades in both developed and developing countries. However, in the context of the study, as 90% of patients with DM are managed at public health care (PHC) clinics by registered nurses (RNs) with minimal or without help from doctors, RNs are expected to use their knowledge for diagnosis, treatment, review, referral and health education of patients with DM in the PHC clinics in the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District (NMBHD). Therefore, if RNs have inadequate knowledge about the management of patients with the disease in comparison with guideline recommendations, the results will be poor management and often complications. These complications have financial and social repercussions on the patient, health systems and the economy of developing countries. In the study, the researcher explored the knowledge of RNs regarding the management of patients with DM in PHC clinics located in NMBHD. The study identified inconsistencies and gaps in knowledge and recommended strategies to improve the quality of care for diabetic patients in the long run. A quantitative, explorative, descriptive design was utilised to determine the knowledge of RNs about the management of patients with DM in the PHC clinics in NMBHD. The researcher utilised Slovin’s formula to draw a sample for the study. Initially, the study aimed to recruit a sample size of 199 participants, as determined by Slovin's formula. However, due to unforeseen complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, only 144 RNs were able to participate. After consulting with a statistician, it was determined that the sample size was still representative of the entire population of 398 RNs working in PHC clinics in Subdistricts B and C of NMBHD in the Eastern Cape. Data collection was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Prior to the main study, a pilot study was conducted using RNs from two clinics in Subdistricts A v to test the questionnaire. No changes were made and none of the data was included in the final data of the study. A descriptive, statistical method using Microsoft (MS) Excel was followed to analyse the data gathered through the questionnaire. The following ethical principles based on the Belmont report were adhered to throughout the study: respect for persons, beneficence and justice. The results of the data analysis revealed that RNs in the PHC clinics in NMBHD have inadequate knowledge about the most critical aspects of DM management, such as making the diagnosis, the correct drug management, as well as the review and referral of patients with DM. Therefore, the study recommended addressing the inconsistencies and gaps identified in PHC nursing policy, practice, education, and research to improve the knowledge of RNs in managing patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the PHC clinics of the NMBHD.
