An appraisal of RDP housing quality in sustaining the needs of the inhabitants: a case of Mount Ayliff, Chithwa Village in Umzimvubu Local Municipality
When the South African democratic government gained power in 1994, its focus was on improving the lives of all the citizens, especially the ones who were the victims of apartheid laws. Providing adequate housing and proper access to government goods and services to poor citizens were perceived as an excellent initiative to better the quality of life of the previously disadvantaged people. This initiative gave birth to essential programmes such as the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP). The South African government embarked on an RDP housing programme to address the imbalances of apartheid spatial planning and unequal access to government goods and services. However, many studies have criticised this housing programme, stating that the government prioritised quantity over quality when constructing the subsidy houses. The purpose of the study was to appraise the quality of the RDP housing programme in sustaining the needs of the inhabitants in Mount Ayliff, Chithwa village, in Umzimvubu Local Municipality. The study employed a qualitative research method and used an interview guide to collect data from ten study participants. The findings show that the RDP housing programme has assisted many individuals in the community of Chithwa village in Mount Ayliff to get out of shacks and own proper houses. However, due to the cheap materials used and poor workmanship, the RDP houses in Mount Ayliff, Chithwa village are defective. Corruption and inconsistencies in the municipality's allocation of RDP houses have left people furious and disappointed in the RDP housing programme, as they believe their municipality is cheating them out of RDP houses. The RDP beneficiaries of Chithwa village in Mount Ayliff do not have title deeds even though they have occupied their houses for more than two decades. Lastly, the RDP beneficiaries had huge expectations about their RDP houses. However, they were disappointed when the houses they received did not meet their expectations. Workplace discrimination based on pregnancy
In the past, South Africa was marked by widespread discriminatory practices, many of which still exist to date. This study investigates the persistent discrimination against pregnant women. The study revealed that in South Africa, pregnant women continue to face discrimination in employment and are often denied the right to go on maternity leave, nursing or breastfeeding and childcare facilities. Presently, pregnancy is listed as a prohibited ground for discrimination in the South African Constitution as well as many ILO Conventions. Similarly, the South African labour law framework which gives effect to the Constitution provides for the protection of women and pregnant workers. This protection comes in the form of measures that proscribe dismissal and discrimination based on. Despite these legislation, this study finds that the less favorable treatment of women and pregnant workers in South African workplaces has become increasingly common, and this has turned into a contentious subject. This study focused on labour legislation that has been developed to safeguard pregnant women in the workplace in light of applicable constitutional protections. Notwithstanding these legislative protections for pregnant women in the workplace, the analysis shows that many pregnant women continue to be treated unfairly due to their pregnancies or for reasons linked to their pregnancies. Consequently, there has been a regression in the actual execution of laws and regulations protecting pregnant workers. The study highlights the need to establish mechanisms to ensure that legislation protecting pregnant workers in the workplace achieves its intended purpose and is implemented properly. Anaerobic process formulation for methane production during dry fermentation of Acacia Mearnsii (black wattle) feedstock
Various batch anaerobic digestion configurations and procedures, for the production of biogas using different feed-stock, have been undertaken in multiple studies. The research presented is set apart in its approach as it focuses on the use of black wattle leaves and cow dung mixture as feedstock to a micro plant facility creating biogas with a methane content of at least 50% during a short retention period of 30 to 35 days. Varying process parameters were applied to investigate the effect on methane production; the temperature control in a mesophilic range with a target temperature of 37°C, draining and drenching of inoculant as a means of heating reactors, and the effect of mixing mass ratio (black wattle leaves: cow manure) related to carbon and nitrogen were studied. A closed-loop batch anaerobic digester, based on the bio-methane potential principle, was used to conduct three individual experiments, each with two reactors. The carbon and nitrogen content of wet black wattle leaves, cow manure, and dam water were examined in triplicate. The average carbon content of wet black wattle leaves, cow manure, and dam water used during experimentation was found to be 6.75%, 27.84%, v and 1%, respectively with corresponding nitrogen content values of 0.57%, 1.44%, and 1%. The C: N ratio was 19.3:1 for wet black wattle, 11.84:1 for the cow manure, and 1:1 for the dam water with the total extracted solids in wet black wattle and cow manure were 46.32 % and 12.65 %. From the samples tested, the mixture of wet black wattle leaves and cow manure with a C: N ratio of 25:1 for the first reactor and 20:1 for the second reactor was used. Both mixtures had a pH of 6.3. Draining and drenching of reactors twice daily, by inoculation, kept the temperature in a mesophilic range, with 37°C as the optimal temperature to assess the production of methane from a mixture of black wattle leaves and cow manure, with temperature, pH, and C: N ratio kept constant. The results showed that the reactor with a C: N ratio of 25:1 and at an average temperature of 36.74°C produced 9170 ml of biogas within 35 days, of which 1094 ml was methane. The maximum methane production was during week 4 when 335 ml, or 25.81% of total biogas, was collected. End-user requirements of an assistive technology for profoundly Deaf parents with infants
As the number of deaf people in the world increases, the amount of parents who are deaf, is also growing. The world is increasingly relying on technology from which deaf parents can, and do, benefit significantly. Deaf parents are able to rely on available technology such as assistive technologies to overcome functional limitations. However, assistive technologies are often abandoned within a short period of time of being acquired. The abandonment of assistive technologies is believed to be due to a lack of proper elicitation of requirements. Therefore, the problem identified in this research is a lack of understanding of end-user requirements of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants. A literature review together with logical argumentation was conducted and applied to identify and recommend a method suitable for eliciting end-user requirements for assistive technologies. Thereafter, an integrative literature review and thematic analysis was done to extract needs and challenges of profoundly deaf parents with infants, and group them according to themes that emerged. Finally, making use of the recommended method and the extracted needs and challenges of profoundly deaf parents with infants, twenty-eight end-user requirements of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants were elicited. The twenty-eight elicited end-user requirements consist of eighteen end-user requirements that express functions of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants, and ten end-user requirements that express an overall goal/objective to be attained by profoundly deaf parents with infants when the assistive technology is designed and developed. To evaluate the elicited end-user requirements, only the eighteen end-user requirements that express functions of an assistive technology for profoundly deaf parents with infants were considered. The influence of visual identity elements on the creation of a footwear brand in Ghana
Branding is crucial to increase and improve competitiveness in the contemporary market. Due to consumers' sophisticated and high standards for various branded items and services, marketers and organisations are now investing in branding to increase the visibility of their goods and services. All industries share this. The high demand for international footwear brands in Ghana has made the local market uncompetitive, causing many local footwear organisations to lose customers and income to their international competitors and ultimately leading to the failure of many local footwear organisations (Agyeman, 2013:24; Vidal, 2022:2). To save Ghana's declining footwear industry, a new footwear brand must be built. The commitment to the effective implementation of the new footwear brand will raise consumer awareness, improve its visual and cognitive image, and increase its competitiveness. The study investigated how footwear manufacturers could build a powerful brand to save Ghana's domestic footwear market. The study also examined how visual identity elements affected the new footwear brand identity development in Ghana's footwear manufacturing industry. The necessary sample was drawn using convenience non-probability sampling approaches, cluster sampling, and basic random probability sampling. A questionnaire was used in the study's quantitative research design to collect the primary data from a sample of 400 consumers who made footwear purchases at Ghana's three biggest malls: Kumasi City Mall, Accra City Mall, and Achimota Mall in the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions, respectively. The questionnaires were distributed to the respondents via email, then, IBM SPSS (version 28)and AMOS software were used to investigate the data. Descriptive statistics andinferential statistics were the two main types of analysis used for the primary data. These provided the frequency tables showing data structures, correlations showing relationships between variables, regressions showing visual identity elements as predictors of footwear brand identity in Ghana. From the empirical results, the visual identity elements: brand name, logo and symbol colour, slogan, and typography had a statistically significant relationship with the new footwear brand identity in Ghana. Health and safety coordination between main contractors and subcontractors at the Medupi power station project
Health and safety (H&S) coordination between main contractors and subcontractors on construction projects is one of the most important factors for the success of a project. The aim of this study was to develop a framework to improve H&S coordination between main contractors and subcontractors on the Medupi power station project, and the objectives were to ascertain the H&S measures used to assess the H&S risks towards the reduction of hazards and injuries; assess the enforcement mechanisms of H&S regulations, and examine the challenges encountered in terms of the coordination of H&S at the Medupi power station project. Moreover, this research addressed the significant issue of possible ineffective coordination of H&S guidelines and policies in the South African construction industry, as well as at the Medupi power station project. This research will help to alleviate incidents and accidents at the Medupi power station project. The research entailed a review of the literature pertaining to H&S, and a questionnaire survey that was used to gain insight into the working conditions on site and to evaluate the state of H&S coordination, its implications, and compliance with the Construction Regulations by all parties concerned. A purposive sampling method was adopted to survey contractors working on the Medupi power station project. The research findings revealed that inadequate H&S communication between main contractors and subcontractors negatively affected project performance as it resulted in the occurrence of accidents on site. The research findings also revealed that most respondents, both main contractors and subcontractors, were aware, and clearly understood the required H&S practices. However, a small number indicated that they were uncertain with respect to such practices. This indicated that there was a gap in terms of H&S coordination between the main contractors and subcontractors on the Medupi power station project. The research findings further revealed that lack of commitment to H&S practices, inadequate communication / consultation relative to the implementation of the H&S management system (H&SMS), inadequate resources as well as inadequate contractor relations between the main contractors and subcontractors constituted barriers in terms of the H&SMS. 5 Recommendations included a need for the following relative to H&S: management leadership, worker participation, hazard identification and control, education and training, programme evaluation and improvement, and optimum communication and coordination for employers on multi-employer work sites.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology, 202
The effectiveness of action learning in developing first-line leadership competence at basf South Africa
As the researcher believes leaders and leadership to be products of both nature and nurture, this phenomenological study was focused on the use and effectiveness of action learning methodology to develop first-line leadership competence. This study aimed to understand the training and developmental experiences of first-line managers during a leadership development programme using an action learning approach. The main research question: “How effective is action learning in developing first-line leadership competence at BASF South Africa”, was supported by five secondary research questions focused on the KASH-in-Transit Leadership Programme and the extent that participants, mentors and departmental managers perceived that action learning developed the leadership competencies of participants, and specifically leadership competence aligned to the BASF Global Competency Model. It also focused on the factors, elements or conditions in the KASH-in-Transit Leadership Programme that were effective and/or ineffective in developing these leadership competencies. Using these research questions as a guide, the current study posed open-ended interview questions that explored participants’ experiences in developing competencies aligned to the BASF global competency framework. The theoretical framework for the study was guided by the constructs of adult learning, action learning and leadership development as well as the link between learning, action learning and leadership development. Data was collected from 15 participants (12 coater drivers, 2 mentors and 1 manager) through the use of observations, action learning sessions and semi-structured interviews, with the interviews transcribed and then analysed using Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software. The information collected and succeeding analysis may help the development of future leaders within BASF South Africa as well as help close the gap in the literature on action learning as a leadership development tool. Action learning as a modern-day approach is capable of developing leadership at multiple levels and contexts, building collaborative partnerships and networks that aid in organisational development. The research findings led to the development of five themes surrounding the phenomenon of action learning as a means to develop first-line leadership competence: (1) Learning transfer has internal and external levers, (2) viii 70 + 20 + 10 = leader and leadership competence, (3) Facilitator and Mentor are catalysts for action AND learning, (4) Leadership development is built with connections and stumbling blocks, and (5) Development is part of succession. Individuals were challenged through exposure to real-world practices while being supported by a facilitation and mentoring system that offered critical, constructive feedback. Case-based research on the fedup model for self-help housing
In South Africa, the government subsidises the building of starter homes to meet the demand for housing for people with lower incomes. However, it is necessary for the state to revise its efforts to meet the demand for housing in the country. Self-help housing is a model that can be used as an alternative to state housing subsidies. The present research study investigates the essential aspects of sustainable self-help housing in the central region of South Africa. The present study aimed to address the central research topic by eliciting responses from participants: How can self-help provision become sustainable in the central region of South Africa? In response to the question, an effective self-help housing support model was developed, the aim of which is to outline how self-help housing projects could be improved. The literature findings demonstrate the potential of this model as a viable alternative to the existing housing delivery mechanism in South Africa. This assertion is supported by a study of self-help housing trajectories and an examination of relevant South African housing policies. However, there has been a lack of emphasis on the simplification of current models to accommodate the needs of implementers, government entities, and beneficiaries of self-help housing initiatives. This study aimed to address the highlighted gaps by utilising a qualitative methodology and drawing upon the data obtained. The data collection techniques included semi-structured interviews, structured observations, and focus-group discussions. A total of 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders in human settlements, while the focus-group discussions involved 50 participants. A total of 5 focus group discussions were conducted with each group consisting of 10 participants. Moreover, the researcher conducted a document analysis, observations, and questionnaire survey. The data collected were analysed thematically. The results revealed that there are still challenges with implementing self-help housing. Moreover, the results are attributed mainly to a mismatch of the roles and responsibilities and not understanding the Enhanced People’s Housing Process (EPHP) policy. The principal contribution of the thesis is that housing policies, programmes and sector plans must encourage beneficiaries to play an active role. This study found that weak or unclear project vi specifications lead to contractor misunderstandings or discrepancies in housing project implementation, resulting in poor-quality work or delays. The conventional contractor-driven housing-delivery model also has issues like poor construction, corruption and mismanagement, profit-driven contractors, high contractor rates, project delays/incomplete projects, illegal occupation of incomplete projects, riots and disputes, ineffective project specifications, and beneficiary disengagement. In this study, it is demonstrated how a positive social impact on housing could be the outcome of an improved self-help approach. Consequently, the research suggests the adoption of an effective self-help housing support model, which may effectively address the challenges posed by informal settlements while enhancing the execution of self-help housing projects. The model has the potential to make contemporary contributions to the public housing policy model in South Africa. This study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable housing alternatives, providing insights into the various obstacles, potential advantages, and recommended strategies within the realm of selfhelp housing. The study's qualitative approach facilitated a comprehensive examination of the lived experiences and viewpoints of diverse stakeholders. Fiscal consolidation and economic growth: a comparison of South Africa and selected three OECD countries
The study examined the relationship between fiscal consolidation and economic growth in South Africa (SA) in comparison with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. The study emphasizes the use of fiscal consolidation as a tool to stimulate economic growth and reduce the budget deficit, focusing on the reforms of public revenues and expenditures. Moreover, the study employed the panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (PARDL) model to explore the relationship between fiscal consolidation and economic growth in SA and three OECD countries from the period 1990 - 2018. The cointegration analysis confirmed the existence of cointegration between the variables which suggested that there is a long-run relationship among the variables. As a result, both long and short run dynamic models were evaluated. The result of the study shows that fiscal consolidation positively affects economic growth in South Africa in the long run, whilst in OECD countries fiscal consolidation negatively affects economic growth, both in the short and long run. Low government debt in South Africa due to lower deficit translated to a higher economic growth whilst higher debt level in OECD countries due to higher government spending translated to higher economic growth, one of the main differences in the relationship between fiscal consolidation and economic growth in South Africa and OECD countries is their spending pattern. Majority of South Africa’s budget is spent on inefficient state-owned enterprises, which have accounted for the bulk of government contingent liabilities, resulting in high borrowing costs, which consequently lead to high borrowing cost, thus the rising central government debt as a percentage of GDP. Unlike in SA, OECD countries spend towards capital expenditure specifically in priority areas such as infrastructure, Technology, and transport hence their high debt levels result in higher economic growth. In attempt to stimulate South Africa's economic growth, it is recommended that South Africa implement effective fiscal consolidations based on expenditure adjustments rather than revenue adjustments, as expenditure adjustments are more likely to reduce deficits and debt-to-GDP ratios and are more effective. In addition, the South African fiscal stimulus package can be used to invest more in infrastructure to increase private capital accumulation and stimulate economic growth. Microstructural based creep life assessment of 1CrMov Turbine rotor steels after long-term service
Creep-resistant 1CrMoV steels are used for high-pressure turbine rotors in fossil fuel power stations operating at steam temperatures up to 565 °C in the creep regime. The upper bainitic microstructure of 1CrMoV rotors changes when exposed to high temperature service over long periods. The aim of this study was to relate these microstructural changes for service exposed 1CrMoV rotor steels to the remaining creep life as determined using existing methods. Analytical electron microscopy was used to quantitatively study the microstructural evolution of service-exposed 1CrMoV steel rotors. 1CrMoV rotor steel samples were characterised in the initial state, and three long-term (272 h to 300 kh) service exposed states. Detailed microstructural investigations were conducted to analyse the cavities; bainitic laths and packets; dislocations; carbide phases and their size, population, composition. The creep life fractions were estimated using conventional life assessment methods based on creep cavitation and hardness. The creep life fraction consumed of the rotors, estimated based on the creep cavities and hardness data, ranged from ~0.5 to 1. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) was used to analyse the bainitic packets, laths, misorientations, and dislocations, which showed that the bainitic lath surface area to volume (SV) correlated with service time. The precipitates were extracted from the Fe-matrix using extraction replication and were further investigated using transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). STEM-EDS and TKD identified M3C, MC, M2C, M7C3, and M23C6 (M = Fe, Cr, Mo, V, Mn) in the 1CrMoV steels. STEM-EDS measurements revealed that Fe/Cr ratios in M3C decreased from 4.5 (initial state) to 2.5 (>272 kh). The Fe/Cr and Fe/Mo ratios in overall carbides decreased from 5 and 10 (initial state) to 1 and 2 (>272 kh), respectively. The TKD analysis indicated that the relative phase proportion of M2C and M7C3 carbides, relative to the total extracted carbides, is positively correlated with service exposure. These microstructural features correlate with the creep life fraction consumed and could potentially be used as another indicator of the remnant creep life.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, School of Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. 202
