    Graphene@microalgae-based nanohybrid structures as adsorbents for removal of Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solutions

    iv ABSTRACT The efficient removal of heavy metals using carbon-based nanoadsorbents poses a substantial challenge in the domain of water purification. Graphene-based materials have been extensively utilised in the treatment of water and wastewater due to their tremendous surface areas, porosity, turntable nature to different functional groups, and photo-catalytic properties. In this project, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesised via the modified Hummers method. A similar method was used to produce nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (NGO), with urea as the nitrogen precursor. Utilising biomass materials to dope graphene-based nanocomposites can effectively enhance their application in water treatment. In this work, graphene oxide-microalgae (GO@Algae) and N-doped graphene oxide-microalgae (NGO@Algae) nanocomposites were synthesised by combining GO or NGO with green Scenedesmus microalgae. This was done through a solution self-assembly mixing method using ultrasonication. The resulting nanocomposites were used to remove Cr(VI) from water solutions. The influence of microalgae content deposited on GO and NGO nanosheets at different weight ratios (1:1, 3:1, and 1:3) on the chemical, structural, morphological, and thermal characteristics of nanoadsorbents was evaluated using various techniques such as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The flat nanosheet-like morphology of GO@Algae and NGO@Algae nanostructured materials was observed through SEM, confirming microalgae's incorporation within the GO and NGO matrices. The thermal stability and surface area properties of GO and NGO nanocomposite materials decreased with the incorporation of microalgae content. The incorporation of microalgae into GO nanosheets showed enhancements in chemical and structural properties due to the presence of the strong covalent interaction (oxygen and nitrogen-containing groups) between the interfaces of nanocomposites. XPS and FT-IR analyses revealed the existence of amides, carboxylic acids, and phosphates, which exhibited positive charges below the pH 2.03 point-of-zero charge. The second phase of the study involved assessing the adsorption capabilities of the GO, NGO nanosheets, and GO@Algae and NGO@Algae nanocomposites in removing Cr(VI)from the water solution. Adsorption parameters such as the effect of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and metal ion concentrations were evaluated for Cr(VI) removal. When comparing GO, NGO, GO@Algae, and NGO@Algae, it was found that GO@Algae and NGO@Algae exhibited superior adsorption performance due to the available functional groups and well-developed pores. Additionally, a mixed ratio of GO or NGO and algae at a ratio of 1:3 was found to be the most suitable for GO@Algae and NGO@Algae. The adsorption efficiency of nanostructured materials for Cr(VI) is significantly influenced by their surface charge, porosity and specific surface area. The results revealed that the adsorption capabilities of GO@Algae (1:3) and NGO@Algae (1:3) were 2.24 and 2.01 times higher than GO and NGO which were 1.64 and 1.89, respectively, at a solution of pH 2 where HCrO4− species are predominant compared to a solution of pH 5 which predominate a mix of Cr2O72− and CrO42- species. The enhanced performance of the GO@Algae and NGO@Algae nanocomposites is attributed due to their increased surface functionalities and porosity. The adsorption of Cr(VI) ions by the GO/NGO@Algae nanocomposites declined with increasing initial concentration of Cr(VI) species in the water medium. The adsorption kinetics data for GO, NGO, GO@Algae (1:3), and NGO@Algae (1:3) exhibited a good fit with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.995) suggesting that chemisorption governed the adsorption process. Similarly, the isotherm adsorption findings showed a good fit with the Freundlich model (R2 > 0.961). The findings indicated that the adsorption mechanism process was characterised by monolayer adsorption onto a heterogeneous adsorbent surface. Furthermore, the GO@Algae (1:3) was found to have the maximum adsorption capacity of 10.85 mg/g surpassing the capacities of both unmodified and NGO@Algae counterparts. The application of GO@Algae and NGO@Algae has the potential to promote the green reuse of graphene-based nanomaterials.     A multistep synthesis of zidovudine in continuous flow systems

    Universal access to antiretroviral drugs is still a challenge in developing nations. This promoted an investigation into an efficient process towards the synthesis of zidovudine (AZT), a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that is used to treat HIV/AIDS. It was the first antiretroviral drug approved by the FDA and it is still widely used today. AZT works by blocking the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which is used by HIV to copy its genetic material. This prevents HIV from replicating and spreading throughout the body. AZT is usually taken in combination with other antiretroviral drugs. AZT was originally used as a single-drug therapy, but it is no longer recommended for this purpose as HIV can become resistant to AZT if it is used alone. Consequently, AZT is most commonly used as part of a combination therapy; this means that it is taken with other antiretroviral drugs. This helps to prevent HIV from becoming resistant to AZT. AZT can be used to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV; it is usually given to HIV-positive women during pregnancy and childbirth. AZT can also be used to treat post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP); this is a course of antiretroviral drugs that is taken after a possible exposure to HIV. The application of continuous flow microreactors to reaction chemistries, such as this, could provide a potentially practical solution that could be used to meet the rising needs for antiretroviral drugs in Africa and to give new opportunities for efficient local drug manufacture. Consequently, the focus of this research was to develop safe and efficient processes towards AZT by taking advantage of micro reactor technology.     The role of leadership on employee motivation and innovation at an information technology service company in Gauteng province, South Africa

    Employee motivation is one of the burning issues for businesses and society, especially at an Information Technology Service Company (ITSC) in Gauteng. The main objective of this study was to explore the role of leadership on motivation and innovation at an ITSC in Gauteng so as to recommend motivation and innovation strategies that can be implemented by the leaders at this ITSC. The theoretical underpinning of this study is based on the Herzberg’s Two-Factor Motivation theory, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Leadership theories and Innovation theories. This study employed a qualitative research approach which relied on inductive reasoning. The research design followed the non-probability convenience sampling method in order to select the most appropriate participants. The study sample comprised twelve employees working at an Information Technology Service Company in Gauteng selected from the population size of 20 employees. For the purpose of data collection, the study employed semi-structured interviews which relied on open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was used to interpret, analyse and report the data. The study revealed that coaching and mentoring, recognising strong performers, offering training and allocating resources are all aspects of leadership that have an impact on employee motivation, engagement and creativity. The research results emphasise that simple recognition and praise would be just as effective as motivational tools as monetary incentives. The study found that the leaders at this Information Technology Service Company in Gauteng encountered challenges such as poor leadership skills, drawn-out processes, a hostile work environment and a lack of communication when attempting to inspire employees. Furthermore, this study recommends that leaders are responsible for creating an innovative environment, encouraging employee innovation and providing funding for it. The research recommends that endorsing flexible policies, facilitating idea exchange channels and allowing lower level employees to offer ideas are all important ways to create a helpful environment. Funding for innovation, training and leadership buy-in should also be a source of support. Furthermore, the study suggests that employee motivation and innovation are essential to an organisation because they increase output, enhance financial results and encourage the generation of novel ideas.     The influence of financial literacy on online banking fraud detection

    The growth of online banking, also known as e-banking, electronic banking or Internet banking, has enticed customers to perform online banking transactions. Even traditional banking institutions are encouraging their customers to adopt online banking services to offer them faster and more dependable services. Online banking services available to customers range from the ability to access their accounts, transfer money between accounts or beneficiaries to more advanced financial services such as applying for loans or making investments. Despite the benefits online banking, it does expose the user to significant risks, including financial fraud and unauthorised payments. The growth of online banking has led to an increase in opportunities for sophisticated fraudsters to commit online banking fraud by means of constantly changing methods that exploit the weaknesses in existing preventive measures, mainly targeting the financial sector and its customers. Due to negligence, curiosity or naivety, online banking fraud victims are often responsible for their own victimisation. Although there is the general perception that customers are not liable for damages incurred due to online financial fraud and that banks will refund the financial losses, the banking industry is moving towards customer co-liability to curb online banking fraud. It has been recognised that financial literacy positively influences a person’s financial behaviour, including online banking. Improving access to financial services through technology requires a higher level of financial literacy to use such services effectively and be less vulnerable to, for example, misleading advertising, fraud, hacking attacks and unauthorised use of data. Given the importance of online banking in the South African economy, as well as the increasing emphasis being placed on online banking customers to education themselves about the safe use of online banking services, the primary research objective of this study was therefore to determine the influence of financial literacy on customers’ ability to detect online banking fraud. In the literature review, the following factors have been identified that could influence online banking customers’ Ability to detect online banking fraud (dependent variable), namely: Financial knowledge, Financial behaviour, Financial attitude, Trust, Attentiveness, Awareness, Risk-perception (independent variables).The empirical investigation adopted a positivistic research paradigm, together with a deductive and quantitative methodology. The methodological strategy used to collect primary data was an online survey, that was cross-sectional in nature. The 280 completed questionnaires were subjected to statistical analyses. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument was assessed by using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, respectively. Descriptive statistics were also calculated to summarise the data, while inferential statistics included Pearson’s product moment correlations, analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests and multiple regression analysis (MRA) to test the relationships amongst the dependent and independent variables. As a result of the CFA analysis conceptual framework and the hypothesised model were modified. It was hypothesised that Financial knowledge, Financial behaviour, Financial attitude, Trust, Attentiveness, and Awareness are the financial literacy factors that have a significant positive influence on online banking customers’ Risk-perception and ability to detect online banking fraud. The empirical results of this study establish the following predictors or determinants of online banking customers’ Risk-perception and ability to detect online banking fraud, namely: Trust, Awareness and Attentiveness. In doing so, this research contributes to validating the notion that certain financial literacy factors could be important to take into consideration in order to assist online banking customers to be less vulnerable by being able to assess the risk and fraud associated with using online banking services. This study theoretically contributes to the body of knowledge on financial literacy and online banking and online banking fraud in general and the influence of financial literacy factors on online banking customers’ ability to detect online banking fraud in particular in a South African context. This study will enable banks and their online banking customers to gain a better understanding of the impact of financial literacy on customers' levels of risk-perception concerning online banking fraud.     Cyber security compliance in South Africa’s maritime sector

    Globally, cyber attacks on the maritime industry have escalated exponentially, indicating that cyber security should be an international priority. The majority of maritime digital systems are connected to the cloud through information technologies, creating vulnerability to cyber attacks. Cyber security is critical to protect and ensure resiliency in the maritime industry’s operations. In July 2021, a cyber attack targeted the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and caused significant disruption to operations at multiple South African ports. Port operations were reduced to manual processes, which resulted in severe congestion. Transnet declared a force majeure during the two weeks it took to reinstate minimal operations. The TNPA cyber attack emphasised the need for effective strategies and procedures to prevent and recover from cyber attacks in the South African maritime industry. As maritime transport contributes significantly to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), the incident had a detrimental effect on the country’s economy. It is, therefore, important to ensure that the South African maritime industry remains aware of the latest strategies and guidelines for cyber risk management. This study set out to establish if South Africa’s maritime industry complies with international standards for cyber risk management by analysing the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) guidelines for cyber risk management. It examines the statutory provisions, regulations, and general principles that underpin employment termination, with a focus on voluntary resignation, constructive dismissal, and termination during disciplinary proceedings. Through an analysis of important case law, the treatise explores the practical challenges and legal ambiguities employers and employees face when navigating the resignation process. The treatise also conducts a detailed comparative legal analysis of resignation laws, focusing on the United Kingdom’s approach and how it contrasts with and could potentially inform legal practices in South Africa.     Investigating the effectiveness of microfinance on poverty alleviation in South Africa

    This dissertation explores the role and effectiveness of microfinance in addressing poverty in South Africa. With a focus on the unique socio-economic landscape of the country, the study employs a mixed-methods approach to investigate the impact of microfinance interventions on poverty alleviation. The research encompasses a thorough review of existing literature, examining the theoretical foundations and empirical evidence surrounding microfinance and poverty reduction, from the perspective of microfinance practitioners. The research design incorporates quantitative analysis through surveys complemented by qualitative investigations through in-depth interviews. Loan officers, middle management and senior management were the target audience for questionnaires designed to elicit their opinions on the contribution of microfinance to the fight against poverty. This multifaceted approach aimed to provide a nuanced understanding of the contextual factors influencing the effectiveness of microfinance in poverty alleviation. Moreover, the study identified potential challenges and barriers that may hinder the success of microfinance initiatives in South Africa. The effectiveness of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in reducing poverty was examined by analysing how well the services of microfinance institutions matched the demands of those looking to reduce their poverty. The results point to a significant discrepancy between the services offered by MFIs and the particular requirements of the people seeking access to finance. Notwithstanding this finding, there is a general consensus that MFIs are essential to the advancement of financial inclusion. The findings of this dissertation are expected to contribute valuable insights to policymakers, practitioners, and scholars interested in the intersection of microfinance and poverty alleviation in the South African context.     A skills development framework for the built environment

    The built environment is one of the largest sources of employment and makes a significant contribution to the gross domestic product of many countries around the world. The built environment is a significant contributor to socio-economic development in every nation irrespective of the geographical difference between countries. Therefore, it is imperative that new graduates of the built environment identify key indicators of competitiveness in order to survive and ensure their success in a constantly changing market. The study was conducted by means of a review of the related literature and by conducting an empirical study. The empirical study was conducted using a quantitative statistical approach by distributing research questionnaires to members falling within the sample population. The primary objective of the study was to develop a performance framework for perceived success of skills development within the built environment. A descriptive survey was conducted among past and present Infrastructure Skills Development Grant programme graduates from the following built environment disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Construction Project Management, Architectures, Town and Regional Planners, Environmental Scientists, Chemical Scientists, Quantity Surveyors and Civil Engineering as well as past built-environment graduates of Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in South Africa. The findings of the study suggested that the following variables had a positive influence on the perceived success of skills development within the built environment: Education; Transformational Decolonisation in Education; Accelerated Advanced Training; Emotional Intelligence; Self-Empowerment Skills; Research; Corporate Governance; Transformation in the industry and Project Management.     A framework for the integration of 4IR-related topics into IT undergraduate curricula in South Africa

    The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has been increasing in relevance since the start of its evolution in 2016. Society has shifted in many ways across different industries and sectors as a result of the digitisation that came with 4IR. This has led to a shortage of skilled individuals since there is a gap in the available and needed 4IR skills demand, causing job displacement. Low-skilled individuals are either left unemployed or must upskill to keep up with the new technologies that come with 4IR. In an effort to mitigate this issue, students can be taught the relevant 4IR-related skills at tertiary level before they enter the industry. However, curricular documents, such as IT2017, and national strategies are often not comprehensive in addressing many 4IR-related topics, nor in recommending which topics are most relevant for integration into IT undergraduate curricula. Therefore, the problem identified in this study is that South African universities offering IT undergraduate qualifications are not prepared adequately to address 4IR-related knowledge and skills demands. To address the gap in the available and needed 4IR skills demand, this research proposes a framework to assist with the integration of 4IR-related topics into IT undergraduate curricula in South Africa. To develop the IT Undergraduate Curricula Framework for 4IR-related Topics, it was important to identify the gap between the 4IR-related skills that are currently integrated in higher education institutions (HEIs) and those that are most relevant in the IT industry. A literature review was conducted to provide an in-depth discussion on 4IR and its impact in different sectors; a content analysis was conducted to determine which 4IR-related topics are currently integrated in South African HEIs that offer an IT diploma qualification; semi-structured interviews were conducted to determine which 4IR-related skills are most relevant in the IT industry in South Africa and globally; modelling was used in the development of the proposed 4IR-related IT undergraduate curricula; and finally, argumentation was used in discussing the relevance of the proposed framework within the School of IT at Nelson Mandela University. The IT Undergraduate Curricula Framework for 4IR-related Topics will assist in the integration of 4IR-related topics in higher education computing departments.     The performance of small construction firms in South Africa under the cost leadership strategy

    Small construction firms in South Africa have been experiencing poor performance over the years. They have not been cost-efficient, resulting in profitability and viability challenges. These challenges have emanated from the firms’ lack of strategic focus. They have not consciously implemented appropriate strategies to enhance their performance. The cost leadership strategy is therefore a viable option for firms to address their viability challenges because winning contracts depends on submitting the lowest tender bids. This research sought to establish how small construction firms in South Africa could best implement the cost leadership strategy to improve their performance through developing a partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) to implement identified significant financial, human capital, innovation and technology strategies. The research followed a quantitative research approach. Data was collected through questionnaires, which were distributed to a sample of owners and managers of small construction firms in the provinces of South Africa. The population of the study consisted of small construction firms in grades 2 to 4 on the Construction Industry Development Board’s (CIDB) contractors register. The respondents, who were selected through stratified random sampling, were requested to rate the importance of finance, human capital, innovation and technology strategies in supporting the performance of their firms. A total of 155 usable questionnaires were returned. The data was analysed using the software SPSS Statistics - Version 28. Chi-square tests were used to identify the statistically significant financial, human capital, innovation and technology strategies for the performance of the firms. Furthermore, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to determine the statistically significant differences in the respondents’ perceptions of the importance of the strategies due to demographics. Thereafter, a structural model was developed through SEM modelling to determine the relationship between the significant strategies and performance. The results established that increasing the available finance, creating higher incomes compared to costs, increasing contracts per annum and supporting the budget for innovation, significantly contributed to the performance of the construction firms. In addition, prioritising skills development, offering basic salaries with incentives, fostering a strong work ethic, and effective coordination of work were significant strategies. Recognising innovations in technology and human resources cost reductions and carefully promoting innovative ideas through the right support infrastructure were the most significant innovation strategies for performance. It was further established that the acquisition and effective use of computer software and hardware, with the relevant technical knowledge and technical tools, were significant technology strategies for firm performance. The study also established the existence of statistically significant differences in the perception of the importance of innovation and technology strategies due to types of work, and differences in the perception of financial strategies due to age (generation). A PSL-SEM implementation model consisting of statistically significant strategies and demographics was developed and presented graphically. It is recommended that small construction firms should adopt the model to strengthen value chain activities for better performance.
