    Extracts of Tagetes minuta L. front of bacteria regarding bovine mastitis

    Bovine mastitis is a problem in the context of animal health. However medicinal plants are a management strategy in agroecological production systems. In this context, the plant Tagetes minuta L. plays a leading role, due to its recognition in the popular pharmacopeia. Thus, the objective of this work was to assess the effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of T. minuta from different collection sites compared to ten bacteria related to bovine mastitis. The antimicrobial evaluation was done through the microdilution technique in syrup, in 96 well microplates in triplicate, for the determination of Minimal Bacterial Concentration (MBC) (%). In the microplates, the extracts of T. minuta and the inoculums of the bacteria were placed in addition to the growth control of the bacteria and the control of the extracts, which were incubated for 72 hours at 37°C in an oven. After this time, aliquots of 5μL of each orifice were transferred to plates containing 5% equine defibrinated blood agar and maintained in incubation for 24 hours at the same previous temperature. With this, the growth readings were performed, with the subsequent interpretation of the results by the geometric mean of the MBC (%). The results indicate that there is a difference in sensitivity to microorganisms by the extracts as a function of the collection sites and both present antimicrobial action.Bovine mastitis is a problem in the context of animal health.     Growth, gas exchange and photochemical efficiency of the cowpea bean under salt stress and phosphorus fertilization

    Cowpea is widely cultivated in semiarid regions; however, these regions face serious problems with salinity of water and soil, thus constituting an abiotic stress that limits the development of this species. The objective of this study was to study the influence of phosphate fertilization on the morphophysiological components of cowpea plants irrigated with salinized water during the vegetative and reproductive phase. The research was carried out in a greenhouse from September to December 2015. A randomized complete block design with treatments arranged in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme with five replications was used. The factors consisted of the use of five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water: 0.5; 1.5; 2.5; 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1 and three doses of phosphorus corresponding to 60%, 100% and 140% of the dose recommended for the culture that was 60 kg ha-1. The plants of cowpea cv. Paulistinha were cultivated in lysimeters with a capacity of 8 dm3. At 30 and 49 days after sowing, periods corresponding to the vegetative (V4) and reproductive (V8 / R1) phases of the culture were evaluated gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and growth. The increase in the electrical conductivity of the water reduced the growth, the photochemical activity and the phytomass accumulation of the cowpea plants, independent of the phenological phase.     Genetic diversity in ornamental pepper plants

    The genus Capsicum comprises a wide variety of peppers and peppers, with different sizes, colors and flavors. The present work had the objective to characterize and evaluate the genetic divergence among eight accessions of pepper (Capsicum annuum). The experiment was developed at the Federal University of Paraíba, Areia - PB. Eight accessions of pepper belonging to the germplasm bank of the CCA-UFPB were used. The experimental design was completely randomized. Data were submitted to analysis of variance by the F test at a level of 5% and 1% significance and the means were grouped by the Scott Knott test at 5% and 1% significance. For the analysis of genetic divergence, the Tocher grouping method and canonical variables were used. The treatment effects were significant, by the F test, at a level of 1% for all the characteristics evaluated, except for crown width and stem diameter, which were significant at 5% probability. According to the results obtained in the Scott & Knott test at 5% and 1% probability, the accessions were differentiated into two to six different classes. According to Tocher’s methodology the accessions were grouped into two groups.     Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) control in sunflower with residual herbicides

    One of the most damaging species in sunflower crops in Brazil is the hairy beggartick (Bidens pilosa L). The large number of seeds, the various vegetative cycles during the year, the staggered germination and the scarcity of selective and effective herbicides to control this weed in sunflower are some of attributes that hinder the control of hairy beggartick populations. Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the control of hairy beggarticks, as well as sunflower tolerance to herbicides. The treatments were as follows: S-metolachlor (1,200 and 2,400 g ai ha-1), flumioxazin (60 and 120 g ai ha-1), and sulfentrazone (150 and 300 g ai ha-1) and two controls (weedy and weed-free check). The selectivity of the herbicides was higher at low doses. Flumioxazin and sulfentrazone caused injury to sunflowers at the highest doses and mainly in sandy soils. Although S-metolachlor did not cause visual symptoms of injury, the higher dose reduced sunflower yield. The herbicides sulfentrazone and flumioxazin provided satisfactory control of hairy beggartick plants in both types of soils. S-metolachlor presented medium control of hairy beggarticks in clay soil; however, its efficiency was slightly higher when applied in sandy soil.     Characterization, pathogenicity and anastomosis groups of Rhizoctonia solani from watermelon

    The objective of this study was to characterize the morphological and pathogenic variation of Rhizoctonia solani isolates as well as to determine mycelial compatibility and hyphal fusion. The R. solani isolates CMM1053, CMM2967, CMM1052, CMM2983, CMM2971 and CMM3890 from watermelon were used. The determination of aggressiveness was evaluated using the six isolates inoculated in the Crimson Sweet susceptible cultivar in a completely randomized design (CRD) with five replicates, the sample unit consisting of one plant. The experiment of mycelial growth rate was installed in the factorial scheme, 6 isolates x 3 culture media, using the following culture media Nutrient Agar, PDA and PSA, and a total of 5 replicates. The color characterization and sclerotia formation was performed 15 days after the fungal inoculation in each culture medium. For the characterization of vegetative compatibility and occurrence of hyphal fusion, the experiments were performed in CDR with three and two replicates, respectively. CMM1053 and CMM1052 isolates were the most aggressive; however, they were statistically different only from CMM2967 isolate. The PSA medium was the most promising for the mycelial growth. It was possible to observe that there was variability in the colonies color, being higher in the Nutrient Agar medium.     Nodal segments and zygotic embryos in culture media for the in vitro propagation of tamarind

    There has been a lack of research on the propagation methods of tamarind, hindering the availability and supply of its products. Considering the nutraceutical potential of tamarind and the long-time required to initiate production, this study aimed to evaluate the establishment of nodal segments and the germination of in vitro zygotic embryos of tamarind plants in culture media, salt concentrations, and activated charcoal, aiming at the establishment of an in vitro propagation protocol. For this purpose, MS and WPM media with 25, 50, 75 and 100% salt concentrations were used both with and without activated charcoal (2 g L-1) for the inoculation of nodal segments and zygotic embryos of tamarind. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized experimental design, in a 2 x 4 x 2 factorial scheme (culture media x salt concentrations x activated charcoal) with 20 replications. It was observed that the in vitro establishment of tamarind nodal segments is viable when using the MS medium with 75% of salts plus 2 g L-1 of activated charcoal and that for the germination of zygotic embryos there was no influence of the treatments. It was also observed that in order to increase the length of the formed plantlets, the MS and WPM media can be employed with 75% of salts.There has been a lack of research on the propagation methods of tamarind, hindering the availability and supply of its products.     Drip irrigation system powered by photovoltaic panels

    The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of a drip irrigation system with photovoltaic energy without the use of energy storage system. The experiment was conducted at the State University of the West Parana - UNIOESTE, Campus of Cascavel, in the laboratory CASA project, during six days, analyzing the coefficients of uniformity of Christiansen (CUC), coefficient of uniformity of distribution (CUD) for measurement of 16 drippers by sector (Keller method) and later the coefficient of variation (CV). In the energy part, the irradiance and the current generated by the panel were analyzed. The irrigation set was also classified according to the ASABE standard. The statistical quality control of the system was also performed in order to evaluate the quality of the set considered, with the means being compared by the Tukey test at 5%. The coefficients of each treatment reached an excellent level according to their classifications. The main results allowed to evaluate that the flow control by dripper showed a significant effect for the factors analyzed. The system obtained excellent processability according to the analyzes of distribution uniformities.     The combining ability of six watermelon genotypes was estimated in a diallel cross scheme (6x6), including genotypes JNY (1), ‘ORA’ (2), ‘KOD’ (3), ‘SOL’ (4), ‘CHG’ (5), ‘PEA’ (6) and all possible hybrids between them. A randomized complete block design (RCB) was used, with 36 treatments, three blocks, and plots with five plants. The following traits were evaluated: days before female flower anthesis, main branch length, fruit mass, number of fruits per plant, yield, fruit length, fruit width, pulp firmness, soluble solids content, average rind thickness, seed length, seed width, and seed mass. The data obtained were submitted to analysis of variance, and a diallel analysis was performed according to Griffing’s experimental method I. According to the general combining ability estimates obtained, genotypes ‘KOD’ (3) and ‘JNY’ (1) were the most likely ones to produce hybrids with smaller-sized fruits and smaller seeds. The reciprocal effects confirmed that the results indicate that these genotypes should be used as pollen donors and pollen recipients, respectively. On the other hand, genotypes ‘ORA’ (2) and ‘CHG’ (5) can be used for the commercial exploitation of sliced ​​watermelons.     Morphological characterization and germination of Syagrus schizophylla (Mart.) Glass. (ARECACEAE)

    The interest in Syagrus schizophylla as an ornamental palm tree and the demand for conservation and preservation of the species led to this research. The objective was to study the physiological characteristics of its germination at different temperatures, as well as the morphological and biometrical characterization of diaspores and seedlings at the initial stages of growth and development. The research was divided into two experiments. In the first one, the aim was to identify the water absorption phases of seeds during germination under five scarification treatments as follows: intact diaspores, scarified diaspores, diaspores with endocarp rupture and intact seeds. In the second experiment, germination was tested at 25, 30 e 25 - 35 ºC; the first germination count, seedling emergence, abnormal seedlings, non-germinated seeds, the emergence curve, the emergence speed index and the mean time of emergence were evaluated. Afterwards, the morphological and biometrical characteristics of diaspores and seedlings were described. The water absorption curve observed under the different scarification treatments showed different water absorption patterns. Emergence percentages were 53, 61 and 47% at 25, 30 and 25 - 35 ºC, respectively. The highest emergence speed index was obtained at 30 ºC. The mean time of emergence was 30 days, approximately, under all the temperatures tested. The diaspores showed a great variability in both shape and size, presenting a globular to ovoid shape with an average length of 2.44 cm and an average width of 1.39 cm.     Dormancy breaking in seeds of different accessions of Luffa cylindrica Roemer

    Luffa cylindrica Roemer is abundant in countries of Asia, Central America and South America. Dormancy in luffa seeds is caused by the impermeability of the coat, which may be a major obstacle in the commercial production of seedlings for the cultivation of this species. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate different methods to break dormancy in different accessions of luffa. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 6 (accessions) x 5 (dormancy breaking treatments) factorial arrangement, with four replicates. Seeds were planted on expanded polystyrene trays, containing commercial substrate Plantmax®. The analyzed variables were: emergence percentage; emergence speed index; number of true leaves; plant height; stem diameter; root length; shoot fresh and dry matter, and root dry matter. The first two variables were analyzed in the entire experimental plot and the others only in the evaluated area of the plot. Scarification with sandpaper nº 80 and cut with pruning pliers on the opposite end to the hilum were the methods of dormancy breaking which led to the best results.
