Vertical Mixing Can Both Induce and Inhibit Submesoscale Frontogenesis

    No full text
International audiencePast studies separately demonstrate that vertical boundary layer turbulence can either sharpen or weaken submesoscale fronts in the surface mixed layer. These studies invoke competing interpretations that separately focus on the impact of either vertical momentum mixing or vertical buoyancy mixing, where the former can favor sharpening (frontogenesis) by generation of an ageostrophic secondary circulation, while the latter can weaken the front (frontolysis) via diffusion or shear dispersion. No study comprehensively demonstrates vertical mixing induced frontogenesis and frontolysis in a common framework. Here, we develop a unified paradigm for this problem with idealized simulations that explore how a front initially in geostrophic balance responds to a fixed vertical mixing profile. We evolve 2D fronts with the hydrostatic, primitive equations over a range of Ekman ( Ek = 10 −4 – 10 −1 ) and Rossby numbers ( Ro = 0.25–2), where Ek quantifies the magnitude of vertical mixing and Ro quantifies the initial frontal strength. We observe vertical momentum mixing induced, nonlinear frontogenesis at large Ro and small Ek and inhibition of frontogenesis via vertical buoyancy diffusion at small Ro and large Ek . Symmetric instability can dominate frontogenesis at very small Ek ; however, the fixed mixing limits interpretation of this regime. Simulations that suppress vertical buoyancy mixing are remarkably frontogenetic, even at large Ek , explicitly demonstrating that buoyancy mixing is frontolytic. Application of two scalings to quantify the competition between cross-front buoyancy advection and vertical diffusion identifies practically equivalent controlling parameters ( Ro 2 / Ek , Ro / Ek 1/2 ); these ratios approximately map regime transitions across simulations with equal vertical eddy viscosity and diffusivity

    No full text

Iteration Overlap and Dual-Sided LSOVA for Efficient Parallel Turbo Decoding Architectures

    No full text
International audienceAn efficient turbo decoder architecture is proposed by jointly exploring advancements in code design, decoding algorithms, and hardware implementation to achieve high-throughput and low-latency performance. At the algorithmic level, we introduce Dual-Sided Local-SOVA (DS-LSOVA), an enhanced variant of Local-SOVA that significantly lowers the complexity of extrinsic information computation while preserving decoding accuracy. To further improve implementation efficiency, iteration overlap interleavers are developed specifically for fully pipelined, iteration-unrolled UXMAP decoders, enabling full iteration overlap. This design reduces decoding latency and boosts hardware area efficiency by up to 22%. Importantly, these gains are achieved without sacrificing error-correcting performance: DS-LSOVA matches the Frame Error Rate (FER) of conventional max-Log-MAP decoding, while the proposed interleavers deliver FER results comparable to the Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleavers used in LTE

Introduction : In 2019, the job of medical assistant (AM) was adopted by the government with the goal of freeing up medical time to answer the needs of the population and allowing an additional two million French people to access a doctor by 2027. The feedback from general practitioners (MG) about the functions of AM in their practices are limited, especially in Finistère. Method : A descriptive, observational and qualitative study was conducted through semi-structured individual interviews targeting Breton MG working with AM. Recriutment mainly took place via groups on Facebook® and continued until data saturation was reached. Data analysis was based on grounded theory and coding was done using Excel® software. Results: Between May 2024 and September 2024, eight interviews were conducted, including various profiles of MG. The tasks of the AM were categorized into secretariat tasks, pre-consultation, prevention, administrative, financial and specific patient tasks (such as electrocardiogram, spirometry, memory tests). Seven out of the eight doctors had reached their patient quota targets set by the French Health Insurance Fund, but mentioned stress and pressure to meet these goals. Despite the disadvantages (targets, long-term costs, MG as employer), MG recognize the benefits of the project, such as medical time savings, financial savings, the ability to see more patients, the impression of improving patient care, and reduced administrative work. All of this contributed to well-being in their job, and MG recommended hiring an AM. Conclusion : The MG interviewed were mostly satisfied about their collaboration with medical assistants and the tasks they delegated to them.

Extremely deep bounce dives: planning and physiological challenges based on the experiences of a sample of French-speaking technical divers

    No full text
International audienceIntroduction: Extreme deep technical diving presents significant physiological challenges. While procedures often blend elements from both recreational and commercial diving, many remain empirical and unvalidated for this purpose. The rise of closed-circuit rebreathers has reduced gas cost and logistical barriers, enabling more divers to reach unprecedented depths. This study, based on the experience of deep divers, explores the limits of extreme-depth diving and the strategies developed to overcome them. Methods: Eight rebreather divers (one female, seven males) with experience beyond 200 metres depth were interviewed regarding their preparation, planning, and execution of such dives. The dive profiles of their deepest dives were analysed. Results: All were highly experienced technical divers. The median maximal depth was 227 [209-302] metres, with a median total dive time of 290 [271-395] minutes. The gas density of the trimix mixture, oxygen exposure, and ascent rate consistently exceeded current recommendations. High pressure nervous syndrome did not appear to be a major limiting factor, whereas decompression posed greater challenges. Three divers experienced decompression sickness following their deepest dives, highlighting the uncertainty around decompression procedures. Conclusions: These dives require rigorous preparation, robust support systems, equipment modifications, and perfect skills to reduce risks, which remain excessively high. Data are lacking to validate current practices. Decompression procedures must be adapted for these demanding mixed-gas dives, which are inevitably prolonged. A dry underwater habitat could improve decompression tolerance. The role of hydrogen as a breathing gas remains uncertain and still needs to be clarified, but some consider it a promising avenue for further exploration

    Le temps équatorial

    No full text

Green chemistry strategies for Flavonol extraction from onion: Exploring natural deep eutectic solvents

    No full text
International audienceThe increasing interest in bioactive compounds from fruits and vegetables has driven the need for efficient and environmentally friendly extraction methods. Traditional solvents such as methanol or acetonitrile, although effective, pose significant environmental concerns. This study explores the use of choline chloride-based natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) for the extraction of flavonols from onions, compounds known for their health benefits. Various NaDES combinations (levulinic acid, tartaric acid, 1,3-propanediol, and urea) and molar ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 2:1, 2:3) were tested. The choline chloride:levulinic acid mixture at a 1:2 ratio showed the highest extraction efficiency for five major onion flavonols: quercetin 4′-glucoside, quercetin 3-glucoside, isorhamnetin 3,4′-diglucoside, isorhamnetin 4′-glucoside, and quercetin 3,4′-diglucoside, as determined by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. To optimize extraction conditions, a Box-Behnken design was applied to the choline chloride:levulinic acid NaDES system, with the variables studied being water content (25–65 % v/v), extraction temperature (20–40 °C), and extraction time (2–20 min). The optimized NaDES-based method was compared with traditional extraction techniques using methanol and green solvents such as ethanol, ethanol/water, and water. The results indicated that the NaDES system yielded comparable or higher amounts of flavonols (4.83 ± 0.05 mg g−1), demonstrated good intermediate precision (RSD < 10 %), and significantly reduced the extraction time. This approach improves flavonol extraction and offers a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative, positioning NaDES as a promising and green method for future extraction processes

    No full text
International audienceThis paper aims to trace and discuss the evolution of ergotoxicology in relation to developmental approaches, from its earliest formulations to the most recent works. Drawing on multiple fields (agriculture, industry, construction, etc.), we show how ergotoxicology has gradually highlighted workers’ active role in their chemical exposure and in building prevention strategies, thereby opening the door to participatory approaches for co-constructing occupational health. In this perspective, development becomes a central issue: operational leeways, constructed safety and metrology, and instrumental genesis all illustrate learning processes, technical and organizational transformations, and enhanced capacity for action. This contribution concludes by examining the place of the notion of development, sometimes seen as “vague,” stressing the need to (re)define it to maintain its operational relevance in contexts of chemical risk.
