Urban Air Temperature Modeling: Combining Physical Simulation and Data-Driven Fine-Tuning
International audienceAccurate urban climate modeling is crucial for addressing the growing impacts of urban heat islands (UHI) and climate change. Physics-based tools such as the Urban Weather Generator (UWG) are widely used but often limited by high parameterization needs and a lack of specialized data. In this study, we develop a hybrid framework combining UWG simulations with deep learning, introducing two models: NUWG-Sim (Neural Urban Weather Generator on Simulations), trained solely on simulated data, and NUWG-city, which is fine-tuned with ground weather station data. To systematically evaluate model performance across heterogeneous urban contexts, we structure our experiments around Local Climate Zones (LCZs) in Toulouse, France. Our methodology involves generating over 3400 UWG initialization files, simulating urban air temperatures time series for diverse surface parameters, and training a neural model on these series. We then fine-tune the model with observed data from selected weather stations, analyzing how the number and diversity of stations environments impact performance on unseen stations from different LCZs. Results show that even limited fine-tuning significantly improves performance, particularly when training includes stations from LCZs similar to the test set. The approach highlights the potential of physics-informed neural models for city-specific urban climate monitoring
Genotype-phenotype correlations in biallelic carriers of FANCM protein truncating variants: A systematic literature review
International audienceThe FANCM gene is involved in the Fanconi Anemia (FA) DNA repair pathway. Although germline biallelic pathogenic variants in genes of this pathway cause the recessive FA syndrome, the role of FANCM in FA or FAlike has been questioned. Biallelic FANCM protein truncating variants (PTVs) have been primarily linked to infertility and cancer, suggesting the gene causes a clinically distinct phenotype. Four literature databases were systematically searched from inception to June 2024 to identify published articles describing individuals carrying biallelic PTVs in FANCM. Twenty articles describing 40 carriers of biallelic FANCM PTVs were identified. We established genotype-phenotype correlations and found that women carrying biallelic combinations of the Cterminal p.Gln1701* and p.Gly1906Alafs*12 PTVs showed infertility, chromosome fragility, breast cancer, and chemotoxicity. Men carrying the same PTVs combinations showed infertility only. Carriers of biallelic combinations including a single N-terminal PTV showed chromosome fragility, infertility, and early onset breast cancer and/or squamous cell carcinoma, and pediatric hematological cancers, often associated with severe chemotoxicity. Our findings indicate that FANCM biallelic PTVs may cause a novel recessive syndrome which is distinct from FA and characterized by infertility, chromosome fragility, cancer and chemotoxicity. While infertility is always observed, the severity of chromosome fragility, cancer predisposition and chemotoxicity seem to depend on FANCM PTVs position and the sex of the carrier. Larger analyses are warranted to consolidate these findings

International audienceAs energy costs rise and the need for a global ecological transition becomes increasingly pressing, daily commuting has emerged as a critical concern. To better understand the implications of these changes, this article analyses commuting practices by re-situating them within the broader framework of the workday in which they take place. Building on a substantial body of research that has examined travel distances across various contexts, it also brings attention to often overlooked dimensions such as presence periods, activity patterns, and scheduling. This paper draws on 67 mobility interviews conducted in France between 2008 and 2019. This rich corpus allows for the development of a typology of workdays, constructed through factor analysis and k-means clustering. While revisiting well-established findings—such as the link between the population density of residential areas and commuting distances—it also reveals that daily mobility patterns vary according to occupation and gender, reflecting broader social hierarchies. The study further suggests that certain forms of daily organisation carry distinctive social value. These results highlight the need to give greater importance to the temporal analysis of daily mobility, as it offers insights into the effects of congestion and supports a broader definition of accessibility that takes socio-spatial inequalities into account.
The massive integration of intermittent renewable energy sources necessitates more complex energy systems with stronger coupling between energy sectors, expanded storage capacities, and more dynamic operation. Model-based decision-making is essential to efficiently design and operate these systems. However, pure physics-based models are often too computationally expensive for real-time applications. Machine Learning (ML) offers high speed and accuracy but suffers from limited interpretability and generalizability. This thesis explores hybrid modeling approaches that combine physics-based and ML models to achieve both speed and accuracy while maintaining interpretability and generalizability. It provides a classification of the fundamental building blocks and design patterns of hybrid modeling, then proposes novel hybrid models for Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and Heat Pump (HP) systems. The hybrid TES model runs approximately 1250x faster with overall mean squared error below 0.48°C2, while the hybrid HP model achieves a 271× speed-up with error below 0.4%. Both models demonstrate improved accuracy and generalizability while requiring less training data than pure ML models. In the second part, both models are evaluated on two case studies, (1) the operation of charging and discharging a TES in a solar power plant, and (2) the operation of a HP coupled with a hot water tank to provide heating for a building. These studies demonstrate the usability of the proposed models for real-time applications.
Assessing Local Inductive Bias in Deep Learning-Based Three-Gamma Event Classification
International audienceThe XENON Medical Imaging System (XEMIS) project aims to develop the first liquid xenon (LXe) Compton camera for functional three-gamma medical imaging. A critical challenge is accurately classifying events based on the number of interacting gamma rays, which is essential for dedicated data treatment and image reconstruction techniques. Traditional methods, such as energy cuts or spatial clustering, are limited in handling the complex, high-dimensional data, noise, and overlapping interactions from monolithic detectors like XEMIS2. To address these limitations, we investigated deep learning methods for event classification. We compared two architectures: a permutation-invariant PointNet model and sparse convolutional tensor networks (STN), implemented using the Minkowski Engine. Both models process unstructured raw spatial and light detection data derived from Geant4 simulations of XEMIS2, specifically using the number of photoelectrons measured by each of the 64 photomultiplier as input. Our objective was to differentiate between events originating from single-, double-, and triple-gamma interactions. We reported classification performance results. While overall accuracy was comparable between the architectures (75.5% for PointNet vs. 76.8% for MinkowskiNet), sparse convolutional networks consistently showed improvements in class-wise discrimination. Notably, the class benefited from significantly higher precision (81.3% vs. 76.4%) when using MinkowskiNet. This improved separation for the class was observed across different model variants, suggesting that the local inductive bias incorporated by sparse convolutions aids in disentangling the complex spatial features of the class. These findings offer insights into the feasibility and performance of STNs for handling the complex data typical of XEMIS2
Assembly Lines in Circulation – Towards a Holistic Framework to Enable the Reuse of Assembly Resources
International audienceThe research project ALICIA -Assembly Lines in Circulation -will provide a marketplace platform that enables the reuse of second-hand assembly resources. It will consist of five digital tools. Using a formalized resource ontology and AIbased matchmaking, the platform suggests suitable resources for new assembly lines. An Asset Administration Shell (AAS) is developed to integrate these resources into IIoT systems, creating a Digital Twin (DT) for production lines with legacy resources. This marketplace complies with data security standards. ALICIA assesses environmental sustainability and worker skills when selecting second-hand equipment, and identifies ethical impacts and risks from technologies, stakeholders, or ecosystem processes. Additionally, the platform allows partners to offer services like equipment health assessment, repair, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
