    Historical Company and Industry Publications: Finding Aid

    This collection (cataloged on Bib #2888882) is comprised of items related to American industries, companies, and association/guilds, primarily from the 1940s to 1960s. These include short publications, pamphlets, reports, and product catalogs. The items originated with the Library’s vertical file, which was culled and the majority of items discarded in 2020. Items related to Alabama and items deemed of significant historical interest were retained and added to the Library’s Special Collections. The vertical file’s original contents date back to JSU’s time as a Normal School; it appears items were added up until at least the 1990s

    Exploring the Functional Significance of a YAP1 Missense Variant of Uncertain Significance in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder with various implications, such as polycystic ovaries, visceral obesity, and increased risk of cancer. YAP1 was recently identified as a gene of interest in the development of PCOS. Researchers have established that single nucleotide variants in YAP1 are likely to play a role in PCOS development. This project aims to provide insight into the potential impact of a YAP1 variant of uncertain significance (VUS). Studies in C. elegans have established yap-1 as a nematode ortholog for human YAP1. A YAP1 VUS was identified through ClinVar, YAP1 c.1015A\u3eG (p.Asn339Asp). Evolutionary conservation of the VUS loci was confirmed using multiple sequence alignments in Benchling. Additional analyses were carried out, examining the difference in amino acid chemical properties and the bioinformatics PolyPhen-2 prediction. PolyPhen-2 predicts this variant to be likely pathogenic (HumDiv score of 0.982). These findings supported further investigation, and we sought out to examine the VUS in vivo through the C. elegans yap-1 ortholog and model. DNA primers were designed and optimized using PCR to amplify the YAP1 VUS loci in the nematode yap-1 region. A CRISPR RNA guide was designed and optimized to target yap-1 using an in vitro nuclease assay. The VUS-yap-1 C. elegans strain was generated through microinjection of CRISPR-Cas9. The generated VUS strain will be assessed for possible phenotypes. This study has provided insight into the potential impact and significance of a patient VUS through in silico and in vivo studies. Future bioinformatic experimentation will include protein modeling to examine potential structural changes between encoded wildtype and mutant proteins

    Predicting Hurricane Evacuation Decisions with Interpretable Machine Learning Methods

    Abstract Facing the escalating effects of climate change, it is critical to improve the prediction and understanding of the hurricane evacuation decisions made by households in order to enhance emergency management. Current studies in this area often have relied on psychology-driven linear models, which frequently exhibited limitations in practice. The present study proposed a novel interpretable machine learning approach to predict household-level evacuation decisions by leveraging easily accessible demographic and resource-related predictors, compared to existing models that mainly rely on psychological factors. An enhanced logistic regression model (that is, an interpretable machine learning approach) was developed for accurate predictions by automatically accounting for nonlinearities and interactions (that is, univariate and bivariate threshold effects). Specifically, nonlinearity and interaction detection were enabled by low-depth decision trees, which offer transparent model structure and robustness. A survey dataset collected in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, two of the most intense tropical storms of the last two decades, was employed to test the new methodology. The findings show that, when predicting the households’ evacuation decisions, the enhanced logistic regression model outperformed previous linear models in terms of both model fit and predictive capability. This outcome suggests that our proposed methodology could provide a new tool and framework for emergency management authorities to improve the prediction of evacuation traffic demands in a timely and accurate manner

    While the oxidative chemistry of transition metals such as iron and copper is a highly developed area of investigation, the study of similar chemistry with nickel is much younger. However, nickel offers rich coordination chemistry with oxygen and other oxidants and is a promising avenue of research for applications such as sustainable hydrocarbon functionalization. Herein, we summarize the progress made recently in nickel coordination chemistry relevant to hydrocarbon functionalization and offer our perspectives on open questions in the field

    Mary Elise Mason (1880-1958) was a native of Athens, Alabama, residing the entirety of her life in the historic Beaty-Mason home at 211 South Beaty Street, built by one of Athens’ founders, her great-grandfather, Robert Beaty. She is buried in Athens City Cemetery. She was an active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she attended Athens College (now Athens State University), majoring in art. An avid historian, she compiled various histories, including historical scrapbooks of Limestone County which are now held by Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society (neags.com). The Limestone County Historical Society published the scrapbooks (9 total) as a single compiled volume in 2010. This collection is comprised of correspondence to Miss Mason, primarily upon the subject of genealogical research
