Everyone Who Believes: Faith and Change With the Protestants of Jacksonville State University

    No full text
Jacksonville State University has seen a proliferation of student ministries espousing Protestant Christian and often Evangelical viewpoints with a focus on evangelization to contemporary college students. The American South is both the most Protestant and Evangelical region in America, and especially so in Alabama, with both region and state experiencing the decline in youth religiosity and growth in nondenominationalism that have characterized American religious trends. The intersection of Southern regional identity with these religious tendencies has been under-researched, especially in the collegiate space. Using direct ethnographic research, qualitative data was assembled on the nature of several campus ministries at Jacksonville State University that was examined through both contemporary and historical data on Southern religious identity and the changes in religious practice in state and region. Perception and accessibility emerged as recurring issues to these ministries, who desired to be open to the secular world and combat negative viewpoints, while having only made minimal changes in the beliefs that have spurred negative stances. The role of women shifting and positions of authority becoming available beyond the traditional stance of male-only leadership also became a salient issue, as did clear evidence of racial divisions between overwhelmingly White ministries and a single explicitly African-American organization.https://digitalcommons.jsu.edu/ce_jsustudentsymp_2024/1046/thumbnail.jp

What Are the Preventative Care and Rehabilitation Techniques for Stress Fractures in Collegiate Athletes: A Critically Appraised Topic

    No full text
Context The two greatest concerns for stress fractures are the loss of practice and competition time and deconditioning due to physical inactivity. The athletic population is one of the most common to experience this type of injury. While lifetime prevalence within the athletic population is approximately 10% for stress fractures, this number is greatly increased to 21% within the collegiate athlete population. This critically appraised topic examines the preventative care and rehabilitation techniques for stress fractures in collegiate athletes. Methods A computerized search was conducted in October 2023. The search terms used were “stress fracture”, “bone stress injury”, “medial tibial, stress syndrome”, “prevention”, “rehabilitation”, “return to play”, and “epidemiology”. Electronic databases used were SportsDiscus and PubMed through the Jacksonville State University online library and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria included articles written in the English language, peer reviewed articles, and studies focusing on return to play protocols. Exclusion criteria included articles written before 2003, studies regarding medial tibial stress syndrome, and articles concerning preadolescent and professional athletes. Validity of the selected studies was determined using the PeDRO scale, STROBE scale, and AMSTAR 2 scale. One author independently reviewed the studies, scored each paper, and reviewed the completed appraisals to come to a consensus on the study quality. Results The literature search retrieved 517 articles and 511 were excluded based on the exclusion criteria, resulting in six studies. One article found that athletes with severe stress fractures were more susceptible to longer return to play times. Furthermore, another study found that female athletes suffered prolonged and more painful return to play. In addition, athletes with stress fractures can greatly decrease their return to play time by going through a gradual increase in impact followed by a gradual return to play. Additionally, a study concluded using preventative care such as knowing and individual athlete’s threshold, limiting overuse activity, breaks in an athlete’s schedule, and later starting age in athletics prior to an injury, can decrease the injury\u27s severity. Conclusions Stress fractures are a common occurrence in collegiate athletes and can interrupt competitive season, whiles have a traumatic effect on practice and competition times. Our critically appraised topic found that the higher the severity of the stress fracture and females have a longer return play time. By using a gradual increase in activity levels and prevention strategies can decrease interruptions in a collegiate athlete’s season and practice times.https://digitalcommons.jsu.edu/ce_jsustudentsymp_2024/1045/thumbnail.jp

An Examination of Implementing a Hard Salary Cap for NILs in Collegiate Sports

    No full text
This study delves into the major significance of sports, as it is a rapidly expanding and widely observed phenomenon. Specifically, this study focuses on the pressing issue of a possible implementation of a hard salary cap for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) earnings in collegiate sports. In the context of worries about maintaining collegiate athletics integrity, college athletes NIL pay has become a major source of debate in the sports world. The complexity of enforcing wage limitations for NILs is a big discussion, with critics arguing against potential violations of athlete economic rights, restrictions on their marketability profits, and practical enforcement challenges. For collegiate sports entities and policymakers, striking the right balance between preserving the amateur model and allowing student-athletes to profit from their NIL privileges remains an ongoing and intricate challenge. The conversation of NIL pay has presented both new opportunities and challenges for athletes, reshaping the landscape of college sports. This shift has not only altered athletes\u27 career trajectories but also transformed the dynamics of marketing and sponsorship for both collegiate and professional athletes. The potential impact on professional sports hinges on the evolution of these developments and the adaptability of the new world of NIL compensation.https://digitalcommons.jsu.edu/ce_jsustudentsymp_2024/1034/thumbnail.jp

Memes: A Social and Cultural History

    No full text
The word meme has assumed the conversations and social behavior of every individual living in the twenty-first century. Despite its widespread use in conversation, and regardless of what medium people may use, many don’t truly know what a meme even is. When its origin is traced it originates with noted atheist apologist Richard Dawkins in one of his works during the 1970s. His definition fits very closely with one of the two definitions found in the Oxford English Dictionary. By this definition memes have existed for all of recorded history, though not in their modern understanding. The other definition, which fits most closely to how most people would describe the word today, can be seen appearing in the world in the early 1900s. From there it goes through several evolutions or eras all slightly adding to the word until we get the recognizable meme we see today. The changing of the form can be viewed not just through the lens of simple categorical history, but of culture history as well. The changing of forms that memes took matches closely with the shifts in culture that were going on during each time. Mass connectedness, a search for a universal language, and explosion of rapid and extreme individualism are all themes seen at the most recent turn of the century which is where the expansion and morphing of memes truly began. Today memes have become important on a level the average person doesn\u27t realize. From the universality of its use, to the evaluation of them en masse, memes have become pivotal to modern life in a way similar to the dawn of the telephone or newspaper were. Thus a deep and in depth history reveals all the complexities hidden behind the word “meme”.https://digitalcommons.jsu.edu/ce_jsustudentsymp_2024/1015/thumbnail.jp

Sex Differences in Sub-categories of Narcissism, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Psychopathy

    No full text
The literature suggests men score higher on measures of narcissism and psychopathy (Grijalva et al., 2015; Muris et al., 2017) and that women score higher on measures of conscientiousness (Schmitt et al., 2008). The literature also shows that women score higher on the warmth, friendliness, and gregariousness facets of extraversion while men score higher in dominance and assertiveness measures of extraversion (Costa et al., 2001; Schmitt et al., 2008). We hypothesize that men will score higher on all facets of narcissism and psychopathy and that women will score higher on all facets of conscientiousness. We also expect that men will score higher on the dominance/assertiveness facets of extraversion while women will score higher on the warmth, friendliness, and gregariousness facets of extraversion. In the current study 160 college students were asked to anonymously fill out the Brief Pathological Narcissism Inventory which measures two aspects of narcissism – grandiose and vulnerable (Schoenleber et al., 2015). This scale has 28 items rated on a 5-point scale. The second measure completed was the Self-Report Psychopathy Scale, version 3 (Paulhus et al., 2015). This scale consists of 64 psychopathy items rated on a 5-point scale. Conscientiousness and Extraversion were both taken from the IPIP-NEO-120 measure of the Big 5 personality traits (Johnson, 2014). Each scale consists of 24 items rated on a 5-point scale. Results and discussion will focus on whether the hypotheses were supported or not and why that might be the case.https://digitalcommons.jsu.edu/ce_jsustudentsymp_2024/1013/thumbnail.jp
