    Relationship between serum lipoprotein (a) levels and retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes

    We studied whether there was an association between development of background or proliferative retinopathy and changes in plasma lipid, lipoprotein, and lipoprotein (a) levels in 111 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and in 57 controls. Serum lipoprotein (a) levels were higher in patients with retinopathy than in individuals without retinopathy. Increased serum lipoprotein (a) levels correlated with higher degrees of retinopathy. Thus, lipoprotein (a) may play a role in the development of diabetic retinopathy

    Radiosynthesis and Biodistribution of 99mTc-Trimethoprim: A Novel Radiolabeled Antibiotic for Bacterial Infection Imaging Using Experimental Animals

    In the present article, we focused on the radiolabeling and evaluation of Tc-99m-TMH complex as a potential candidate for infection imaging in vivo. For this; Trimethoprim (TMH) used to treat bacterial infections was investigated to label with Tc-99m. Labeling was performed using thin (II) chloride as a reducing agent at room temperature for 1 h and radiochemical analysis involved thin layer radiochromatography (TLRC) and high pressure liquid radiochromatograpy (HPLRC) methods. The stability of labeled antibiotic was checked in the presence of rat blood serum at 37 degrees C up to 180 min. The maximum radiolabeling yield was found to be 96 +/- 2% and remained constant at more than 85 +/- 1% even in rat serum for 180 min after radiolabeling. Static image of Tc-99m-TMH in male rats demonstrated that important radiation signals are present in the infected site at first glance in 30 min. After 30 min the uptake of the Tc-99m-TMH as ID/g% in the infected muscle (INM) and normal muscle (NM) of the rats were 7.5 +/- 1.5% and 5.00 +/- 1.2%, respectively. In the INM/NM ratio a desirable behavior was observed as the values for the INM/NM increased up to 10.6. Tc-99m-TMH prepared with high yield is able to localize well in the bacterially infected muscle of the rats. As a result, Tc-99m-TMH may be developed as a radiopharmaceutical agent to distinguish infection from inflammation by nuclear imaging

    Assessment of micronuclei induction in peripheral blood and gill cells of some fish species from Aliaga Bay Turkey

    The aim of this paper was to assess the biological damages in fish caused by various mutagenic agents present in polluted waters of Aliaga Bay. For this purpose, micronuclei (MN) test was performed using peripheral erythrocytes and gill cells of different fish specimens caught from both polluted and relatively clean sites from Aliaga Bay (Turkey). Micronuclei tests is a system of mutagenicity testing used for determining changes in DNA fragments such as micronuclei in the cytoplasm of interphase cells caused by the pollution and chemicals in the environment. Thus, it was attempted to determine whether pollution affected the erythrocytes and gills of fish living in Aliaga Bay at the level of DNA by the means of micronuclei (MN) test. According to the results of present study, frequency of MN was found at high level in polluted site. In conclusion, this study indicates that the micronuclei test gives sensitive results in monitoring the pollution, especially the pollution of harbor, and thus it might be used as standard method in regularly monitoring pollution of coastal ecosystem.     Synthesis of thermally stable and low band gap poly(azomethine-urethane)s containing fluorene unit in the backbone

    New poly(azomethine-urethane)s (PAMU)s were prepared to investigate the effects of different four diisocyanates on some physical properties such as thermal stability, optical and electrochemical properties. First, the fluorene Schiff base was synthesized as in the literature. Then, this Schiff base was converted to poly(azomethine-urethane)s using diisocyanates (2,4-toluenediisocyanate, 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate, methylene-di-p-phenyl-diisocyanate, and hexamethylene-diisocyanate) via condensation reaction. Second, the structures of PAMUs were confirmed by FT-IR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectral analyses. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to determine the electrochemical oxidationreduction characteristics of (PAMU)s. The CV results of PAMUs compounds showed to have an electrochemical band gap below such as 2.0 eV. The PAMUs were characterized by TGA, DSC, SEM, SEC and AFM techniques. TGA analysis results of compounds showed considerable increasing of the thermal stability of polymers, because of finding of azomethine bond in the main chain

    PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF HAWTHORN (Crataegus spp. L.) FRUITS IN TURKEY

    Hawthorn (Crataegus spp. L.) is a native fruit of great economic importance in Turkey and has been widely using in folk medicine particularly for the treatment of mild heart diseases for a long time. In the study, 18 previously selected hawthorn genotypes belong to several Crataegus species grown in the hawthorn repository collection in Malatya province in Turkey were evaluated. Fruit mass and soluble solid content of selected genotypes ranged from 0.76 to 4.27 g and 6.71 to 15.83%, respectively. The genotype 44MA12 belongs to C. monogyna subsp. azarella had distinct and the highest anthocyanin (516 mg per 100 g fresh fruit) content and the strongest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity (2.91 mu g.g(-1)). The genotype 44MA11 belongs to C. meyeri had the highest phenolic content (3460 mg per 100 g gallic acid equivalent in fresh fruits). All hawthorn genotypes displayed high antioxidant activity. The results suggest that hawthorn fruits including significant human health benefit substances and may be used for developing functional foods because of its high phenolic, anthocyanin content and antioxidant properties

    Numerical analysis of laminar pulsating flow at a backward facing step with an upper wall mounted adiabatic thin fin

    The effect of an upper wall mounted adiabatic thin fin on laminar pulsating flow in a backward facing step has been investigated numerically. Study is performed for different Reynolds numbers (based on the step height) in the range of 10 and 200 and for the expansion ratio of 2. The working fluid is air with the Prandtl number of 0.71. The governing equations are solved with a general purpose finite volume based solver, FLUENT. The effects of various pertinent parameters, Reynolds number, fin length and pulsating frequency on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are numerically studied. It is observed that fin alters the flow field and thermal characteristics. In the steady flow case, heat transfer enhancement is obtained with the installation of the fin on the upper wall and increases with increasing fin length and increasing Reynolds number. Heat transfer enhancement of 188% is obtained for fin length of L-f = 1.5H at Reynolds number of 200. In the pulsating flow case, time-spatial averaged Nusselt number along the bottom wall downstream of the step normalized with spatial averaged Nusselt number in the steady flow case versus excitation Strouhal number shows a resonant type behavior; first an increase in the value is seen up to St = 0.05, then a decrease is seen with the increasing values of the frequency of the pulsation for the case without fin. Adding a fin shifts the maximum value of the normalized Nusselt number from St = 0.05 to St = 0.1. Compared to steady flow with no-fin case, adding a fin is not advantageous for heat transfer enhancement in pulsating flow. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Prevention of posterior capsule opacification by retinoic acid and mitomycin

    Background: Our aim was to evaluate the effect of an intraoperative single dose of retinoic acid (RA) or mitomycin C (MMC) in preventing posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Methods: Twenty-seven rabbits were divided randomly into three groups. RA (250 mug/ml) and MMC (0.04 mg/ml) were given 0.1 ml by hydrosection and 0.9 ml into the capsular bag after phacoemulsification. The third group served as a control group. Three months after intervention PCO was graded clinically. Furthermore, proliferation of lens epithelial cells was evaluated histologically. Results: Two eyes developed corneal edema in the MMC group. On clinical assessment, RA and MMC were significantly effective in preventing PCO compared with controls (P <0.005). On histological analysis, there was significantly reduced proliferative activity on posterior capsules in the treatment groups, in contrast to multilayer cells in the control group. Conclusion: Intraoperative single-dose administration of RA and MMC significantly prevented the development of PCO in rabbit eyes. The optimal biocompatible dosage must be carefully determined by further investigation

    Needs of Patients with Schizophrenia and Their Predictors

    Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the needs of patients with schizophrenia and to determine the sociodemographic and clinical variables associated with these needs. Method: The study was carried out with 94 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and their primary caregivers. The diagnoses were established based on DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association 1994) criteria. The patients' needs were evaluated with the Camberwell Assessment of Needs Scale (CAN), which reflects both the patient and the caregiver views on needs and problems. In addition, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, the Personal and Social Performance Scale, the Quality of Life Scale for Schizophrenia and the Perceived Family Burden Scale were used as data collection tools. Results: 'Psychotic symptoms' stood out as the most prevalent need to be met. 'Money' and 'intimate relations' were determined as the needs that the patients suffered most from. Being female, being married, living with families, having high school or higher education were found less associated with the needs. The variables explained 45.1% of the variance in predicting needs and 23.4% in predicting unmet needs. The Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia and Perceived Family Burden Scale were significant predictors for patients and the PANSS-Positive Symptoms Scale for caregivers. Conclusion: Any treatment targeting solely the symptoms proves to be insufficient for patients with schizophrenia. Treatment planning should focus on the needs of patients and the needs identified by patients should be at the center of the treatment. A 'needs assessment' will make an important contribution not only to the planning of individual treatments but also to the planning of a community mental health services scheme and increasing its effectiveness
