Report on the Project Enhancement of Sustainable Management of the Blue Swimming Crab Fisheries in Kep Province, Cambodia
Get PDFBlue Swimming Crab (BSC) is one of the most economically important aquatic species for Cambodian fishers, and crab fisheries has been their major source of income. Besides, BSC is also known as a favorite food for travelers visiting the coastal areas as well as in other parts of Cambodia.
There had been significant reductions in BSC catch in Cambodian waters since 2000 as reported by Chap et al. (2012) and Tong (2013). Crane and Vandy (2015) also stated that the number and size of BSC captured from the waters of Cambodia had been decreasing. It has therefore become necessary to conserve and manage such resources for sustainable utilization by the fishers. No full textSince USAID Oceans began in May 2015, the program has achieved national, regional, and international impact in designing and implementing eCDT technologies; strengthening human and institutional capacity to conserve marine biodiversity through sustainable fisheries management plans; and enhancing public-private partnerships to combat IUU fishing and seafood fraud. USAID Oceans key accomplishments as of May 2020 include:
- Supporting the development of 7 innovative eCDT technologies and eCDT systems that have tracked more than 4 million pounds of legal and sustainable seafood products within the seafood supply chain, representing a value of approximately US4 million by engaging with public and private sector partners, including U.S.-based seafood suppliers such as Anova Food, LLC. and Bumble Bee Seafood.
- Training over 1,800 women and men from governmental and non-governmental stakeholder groups throughout Southeast Asia to use strategic tools in support of project objectives

Despite their important role, women’s work often goes unseen. This video provides an introduction to conducting gender-specific research in Southeast Asia’s fisheries. No full textThe SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) convened the “Teleworkshop on Development and Improvement of Regional Tools for Combating IUU fishing in the Southeast Asia” from 27 to 28 August 2020, back to back with the Teleseminar on Way Forward for Combating IUU Fishing in Southeast Asia, 24 to 26 August 2020.
The “Teleworkshop on Development and Improvement of Regional Tools for Combating IUU fishing in the Southeast Asia” has objectives to:
1. Discuss way forward of the RFVR Database for vessels 24 meter in length and over;
2. Seek views from AMSs on development of the RFVR Database for vessels less than 24 meters in length;
3. Seek views from AMSs on required supports from SEAFDEC for effective and efficient implementation of PSM; and
4. Discuss and seek recommendations from AMSs on the “Way Forward for Combating IUU Fishing in Southeast Asia” developed during the Teleseminar on Way Forward for Combating IUU Fishing in Southeast Asia” held on 24-26 August 2020
