Haldane phase on the sawtooth lattice: Edge states, entanglement spectrum, and the flat band
International audienceUsing density matrix renormalization group numerical calculations, we study the phase diagram of the half filled Bose-Hubbard system in the sawtooth lattice with strong frustration in the kinetic energy term. We focus in particular on values of the hopping terms which produce a flat band and show that, in the presence of contact and near neighbor repulsion, three phases exist: Mott insulator (MI), charge density wave (CDW), and the topological Haldane insulating (HI) phase which displays edge states and particle imbalance between the two ends of the system. We find that, even though the entanglement spectrum in the Haldane phase is not doubly degenerate, it is in excellent agreement with the entanglement spectrum of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) state built in the Wannier basis associated with the flat band. This emphasizes that the absence of degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum is not necessarily a signature of a nontopological phase, but rather that the (hidden) protecting symmetry involves nonlocal states. Finally, we also show that the HI phase is stable against small departure from flatness of the band but is destroyed for larger ones
Hydrothermal alteration of volcanic rocks in Seival Mine Cu–mineralization – Camaquã Basin – Brazil (part I): Chloritization process and geochemical dispersion in alteration halos
International audienceThe Seival Mines are situated in the NE portion of the Lavras do Sul mining district, southernmost Brazil. They are hosted by volcanic and sub-volcanic rocks of Neoproterozoic age, which are part of the post–collisonal Camaquã Basin volcano–sedimentary sequence. The mineralization occurs in shoshonitic volcanic and sub–volcanic rocks of the Lavras do Sul Shoshonitic Association. They are of intermediate composition and exhibit widespread hydrothermal alteration. The mineralization occurs primarily in the form of bornite, chalcocite, covellite, pyrite, and in supergene phases as malachite. Mineral occurrence is always controlled by fractures. Ore is associated with chloritization processes, which produced smectite, chlorite/smectite and corrensite clay minerals and gangue of carbonate, mostly calcite, and barite. In this study field mapping and drill core sampling, petrography with optical microscopy and electron microscopy, X–ray diffraction for clay size fraction characterization and whole–rock geochemistry are used to understand the spatial distribution and relative chronology of hydrothermal alteration products of different lithology in the mineralized zones. The post–magmatic fluid activity and hydrothermal lower–temperature alteration that produced smectite ➔ chlorite/smectite ➔ chlorite and corrensite ➔ carbonate have changed the major, minor, trace and rare earth element (REE) contents. Lavas and sub-volcanic rocks contain Cu–Fe sulfides. In alteration halos, Cu–sulfides with supergene influence is related to circulation of late hydrothermal fluids. The pH variations and sulfide materials are related to dispersion metals around vertical structures
The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey I. Survey description and preliminary data release*
International audienceThe LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) is a deep 120–168 MHz imaging survey that will eventually cover the entire northern sky. Each of the 3170 pointings will be observed for 8 h, which, at most declinations, is sufficient to produce ∼5 resolution images with a sensitivity of ∼100 µJy/beam and accomplish the main scientific aims of the survey, which are to explore the formation and evolution of massive black holes, galaxies, clusters of galaxies and large-scale structure. Owing to the compact core and long baselines of LOFAR, the images provide excellent sensitivity to both highly extended and compact emission. For legacy value, the data are archived at high spectral and time resolution to facilitate subarcsecond imaging and spectral line studies. In this paper we provide an overview of the LoTSS. We outline the survey strategy, the observational status, the current calibration techniques, a preliminary data release, and the anticipated scientific impact. The preliminary images that we have released were created using a fully automated but direction-independent calibration strategy and are significantly more sensitive than those produced by any existing large-area low-frequency survey. In excess of 44 000 sources are detected in the images that have a resolution of 25 , typical noise levels of less than 0.5 mJy/beam, and cover an area of over 350 square degrees in the region of the HETDEX Spring Field (right ascension 10h45m00s to 15h30m00s and declination 45 • 00 00 to 57 • 00 00)

A new urban segregation-growth coupled model using a belief-desire-intention possibilistic framework
International audienceWe study the feasibility of using Belief, Desire and Intention agents for modeling the phenomena of urban growth and segregation. Uncertainty, typical of real world situations is modeled using possibility theory. We have also implemented a simple visualization tool whose aim is to track the changes in the model. Some preliminary experiments suggest that such an approach might allow a decision-maker to dynamically track the changes in the model. Besides, it is also possible to interact with the different steps of the simulation via the model. Our proposal makes it possible to simulate the interactions between cognitive agents in an economical environment while taking the spatial context into account
A transcriptomic approach to study marine plankton holobionts
International audienceSymbiosis is a widespread phenomenon in the biosphere. In marine benthic environments breakdown of symbiosis is responsible for coral bleaching and dramatically affects coral reef ecosystems functioning [1]. In the water column, planktonic organisms are key component of pelagic ecosystems and a number of species form mutualistic association with microalgae forming a photosymbiosis [2]. Here we intended to investigate the genetic basis of photosymbiosis, through a transcriptomic approach on marine plankton organisms. We focused more specifically on associations occurring between radiolarian host (protist, zooplankton) and dinoflagellates symbiont (protist, phytoplankton) living inside the host cell. It has recently been highlighted that these holobionts are widespread in oligotrophic open oceans and there are also evidences of their fundamental implication in biogeochemical carbon, silica and strontium cycles [3, 4, 5, 6]. RNA-seq technologies allow obtaining an unprecedented amount of data for unicellular organisms isolated from the environment [7]. The study of such non-model holobionts datasets requires de novo assembly, which implies considerable computational resources and the potential production of chimeric sequences [8, 9].We therefore developed an original strategy aiming at accelerating and improving de novo assembly for holobiont datasets. We chose SIMKA [10] a fast kmer-based method initially developed to estimate the similarity between numerous metagenomic datasets, and which has been recently adapted to extract their common sequences. As our symbionts are identified, we used SIMKA to compare our holobionts transcriptomes to publicly available dinoflagellates transcriptomes [11] generating two datasets, one composed of reads from the symbionts and another with reads from the host (for which no reference data are currently available). Independent assemblies were then performed in parallel, accelerating the study process, and minimizing the proportion of resulting chimeric sequences. Our strategy produced a unique and comprehensive genomic dataset for Radiolaria [12, 13], and offers a pragmatic, large scale, comparison strategy to assemble and study holobionts [9]. Our new sequences obtained from holobionts study will be used for phylogenomics investigation, as reference for environmental metagenomic studies and ultimately to understand and characterize the molecular basis of symbiotic relationships in the plankton.Bibliografic references :[1] Simon K. Coherent temporal extrapolation of labeled images
International audienceIn developmental imaging, 3D+t series of microscopic images allow to follow the organism development at the cell level and have now became the standard way of imaging the development of living organs. Dedicated tools for cell segmentation in 3D images as well as cell lineage calculation from 3D+t sequences have been proposed to analyze these data. For some applications, it may be desirable to interpolate label images at intermediary time-points. However, the known methods do not allow to locally handle the topological changes (ie cell. division). In the present work, we propose an ex-trapolation method that coherently deformed the label images to be interpolated
Legal NERC with ontologies, Wikipedia and curriculum learning
International audienceIn this paper, we present a Wikipedia-based approach to develop resources for the legal domain. We establish a mapping between a legal domain ontology, LKIF (Hoekstra et al., 2007), and a Wikipedia-based ontology, YAGO (Suchanek et al., 2007), and through that we populate LKIF. Moreover, we use the mentions of those entities in Wikipedia text to train a specific Named Entity Recognizer and Classifier. We find that this classifier works well in the Wikipedia, but, as could be expected, performance decreases in a corpus of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights. However, this tool will be used as a preprocess for human annotation. We resort to a technique called curriculum learning aimed to overcome problems of overfitting by learning increasingly more complex concepts. However, we find that in this particular setting, the method works best by learning from most specific to most general concepts, not the other way round
