Photographic Self-fashioning: The role of photography in community-formation by the Skagen Painters
This article looks at a selection of photos from the artists’ colony in Skagen Denmark and argues, that the photographic representations from the colony throughout the 20th century have played a minor role in the Danish art historiography on the subject. The article examines how the group identity and the community are depicted in a number of photographs from the 1870s and 1880s, and analyses how these photographs can be viewed as performative acts, which helped bolster the group identity and community-formation. The analysis thus emphasises the importance of the photographic act itself, arguing that the photographs not only function as witnesses to events that have taken place, but that they also convince the viewer of community formation. It is argued that the photographs of communal activities do not only represent a 'pastness', but that they also indicate a present and point to community formation. The empirical material consists of the artists’ accounts of being an artist in an artists’ colony such as anecdotes, letters, eyewitness accounts published in contemporary media and some of the photographs of the artists’ communal activities in the collection of Art Museums of Skagen
Oxford Handbook of Mesolithic Europe
The Baltic Sea basin represents the southern and eastern Baltic shores and hinterlands of the countries Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The Mesolithic in this area begins roughly at the Pleistocene–Holocene transition and ends with the appearance of pottery in Latvia and Lithuania or the establishment of agrarian Neolithic cultures in the other countries under consideration. It comprises several archaeological entities that are differentiated by artefact spectra and were present in different timespans. During the Preboreal and Boreal, the pan-European Maglemosian was present in the western parts and the last Swiderian and Pulli complex in the east. The area is characterized during the middle Mesolithic by the Kongemose and Chojnice-Pieńki cultures, while the Kunda culture appears at the beginning of the Boreal in the eastern Baltic area. During the Late Mesolithic, the Ertebølle culture establishes itself in Germany and western Poland, while the Janisławice (Neman) culture is distributed in eastern Poland and Lithuania. Further north, the Narva culture is present in Latvia and Estonia. While most of the cultural entities in the area were originally defined from a national perspective, modern research has shown that several of these belong to superregional technocomplexes
Temporal patterns in Mesolithic activity at Duvensee, Germany
The Duvensee peat bog is one of the best-known prehistoric landscapes in northern Europe, with hunter-gatherer activities located on small islands on the western edge of an Early Holocene lake. Excellent organic preservation, precise excavation, and rigorous radiocarbon sample selection permit the application of Bayesian chronological modelling. Over 250 radiocarbon results date a dozen Mesolithic sites to an extended period between the 9th and 7th millennia BCE. Each site may only have been used briefly – perhaps only for a single season in some cases – but some were used repeatedly over the course of decades or even centuries. Site chronological models reveal sharp fluctuations in the overall level of recorded Mesolithic activity. A spike in the intensity and diversity of activity coincided with the rapid expansion of hazel (Corylus avellana) at the start of the Boreal biozone, but a steep decline in dated activity in the later 9th millennium BCE may be an artefact of changes in lake level, rather than reflecting a response to vegetation change, climate deterioration or societal reconfiguration. Although the Duvensee radiocarbon results can be construed to support arguments that rapid climate change had a significant impact on human activity, known climate events occurred when the record of human occupation at Duvensee was already discontinuous. It is therefore difficult to infer (or exclude) environmental factors as triggers of changes in the archaeological record. Our results suggest focusing research on the early Boreal phase, during which the widest range of site-types is preserved and accessible for archaeological investigation
The Vikings in Poland
This pioneering work offers a meticulous exploration of Scandinavian presence in Viking Age Poland. Unveiling the complexities and controversies of past research and delving into the nuances of reciprocal interactions between Western Slavic and Scandinavian populations as revealed through archaeology and medieval texts, the book casts genuinely new light on a previously overlooked part of the Viking world. In setting the stage for these investigations, the monograph traces the evolution of Viking and Old Norse studies in Poland. It covers the romanticisation of Norse culture and literature, the dark days of the Second World War when archaeology was strongly driven by violent ideologies, and the profound changes that occurred in academia after the fall of communism and Poland’s accession to the European Union. At the core of this book are thorough investigations into cross-cultural interactions along the shores of the southern Baltic as well as in the interior of Poland. Using first-hand analyses of archaeological evidence from bustling ports of trade, settlement sites, silver hoards, and burial grounds, it is argued that the relationship between the local Western Slavic population and the Scandinavian migrants was highly complex but overall very symmetrical. Crucial notions such as the construction of identity in diasporic communities, ritual behaviour, and the symbolic content of Viking Age material culture are also discussed at length, offering new insights into Scandinavian and Slavic minds.Enriched with high-quality illustrations, photographs, as well as artistic reconstructions, this book fills many blank spaces in the field of Viking studies and is intended both for professional audiences and general readers interested in the intricacies of our shared past

Using open-data portals, remote sensing and computational modelling to investigate historic wreck sites and their environments: 45 years on from Muckelroy
We explored site formation processes at 549 shipwrecks in the North and Baltic Seas using multibeam echosounder (MBES) data and environmental/anthropogenic variables. Phase 1 classified the structural integrity of each wreck. Phase 2 used regression modelling to explore correlations between wreck class and environmental variables at individual sites. A best-fit model comprised depth, salinity, fishing intensity, and wreck year. In phase 3 multi-criteria analysis predicted preservation potential across the full model domain. Highest preservation potential is modelled for the southern Baltic Sea and Norwegian Trench, with low potential in shallower areas of the North Sea and off England, Netherlands and Germany.RESUMENExploramos los procesos de formación de sitio de 549 pecios de los mares del Norte y Báltico, empleando datos de ecosonda multihaz y variables ambientales/antropogénicas.
Re-thinking a Sacred Space:The evolution of burial practices as seen from a Bronze Age tumulus from Karlstrup, Denmark
In this paper, we use a cultural evolution framework and methods to explore how continuity and change can be observed in a relatively small, enclosed space – a single prehistoric burial mound, from Karlstrup, Denmark, with a long and complex history of re-use.This burial mound was extensively used and re-used across the Late Neolithic ‘Dagger Period’ and Early Nordic Bronze Age. Although archaeologists have long acknowledged the burial traditions of these two periods as quite distinct from each other, there is still much to be explored regarding what – if any – cultural evolutionary relationships there may be between societies across these periods (i.e., whether Nordic Bronze Age uses of sacred spaces, such as burial grounds, can be shown to have evolved from pre-existing Neolithic uses). By mapping a series of 41 cultural traits across the many funerary entities within burial Mound 4 at Karlstrup, we trace the degree of change, continuity, and coherence (i.e. cultural evolution) between Late Neolithic and Early Nordic Bronze Age burial traditions across time. We then relate these fi ndings back to contemporaneous changes in notions of identity and social status in later European prehistory. By examining the evolution of the use biography of this mound, we relate changes in the sacred landscape with the changing social and economic circumstances of the deceased individuals buried in the mound, as well as the living individu-als and communities that constructed them during a transitionary period of prehistory in flux
