Tangible Books, Catalogues of Holdings and Abstract Bibliographies.:Retrospective Bibliography in Denmark
This article analyses the history, state and possible development of retrospective bibliography in Denmark. Current bibliography, a joint responsibility of the Danish Bibliographic Centre (DBC) and the Royal Danish Library, is governed by legislation, whereas retrospective bibliography is not. The history of retrospective bibliography is closely connected to legal deposit and to the holdings of the Royal Danish Library. The printed retrospective bibliography, Bibliotheca Danica, was published in the years 1872–1931. An addition was published in 1943, and a photographic reprint with corrections and supplements was published 1961–1963. In spite of the fact that the Royal Danish Library many years ago made a retrospective conversion of all entries in Bibliotheca Danica, there is today no digital version of its entries and no digital Danish retrospective bibliography covering the period 1482–1840. There are instead cataloguesof holdings of individual libraries and national union catalogues. The article concludes that it would be desirable to produce a digital retrospective bibliography of books printed before 1841

Fold it - recent finds of figural handles from Roman folding knives in Denmark
A few years ago, an article on Roman folding knives in Denmark would have been unfeasible, as this small and distinct group of artifacts had not yet been identified. However, the increasing use of metal detectors in Denmark has led to the discovery of numerous new artifact types, some readily identifable and others less so. The identification process of this new type began with the discovery of a complete folding knife in Gl. Rye cast in copper alloy. While initially proposed to be of Roman origin, this attribution was met with skepticism due to the early dating it implied, resulting in a lack of consensus among both detectorists and archaeologists.Subsequent discoveries of similar folding knife fragments have since emerged, beginning with a find from Oslo, Norway, followed by two fragments from different regions in Jutland, Denmark, as well as a fragment from a distinct handle type uncovered in Zealand, Denmark. To date, these represent the entirety of identified fragments from southern Scandinavia. This article presents and contextualizes this material. Moreover, the article argues for a Roman provincial origin of these artifacts. It examines their iconographic features and archaeological context, complemented by metallurgical analyses.These analyses reveal a metal composition closely resembling that of Roman sestertii minted in the 1st century AD. PastCoast – Using Ground Penetrating Radar data for high resolution chronological investigations of landscape change
Studying land use, transportation, and settlement patterns impacted by isostatic uplift, flash floods, and coastal erosion is essential for understanding past human activities, especially in the face of ongoing climate change. Non-intrusive geophysical methods, particularly 3D ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and digital elevation models (LiDAR), provide valuable insights into the relationship between past human activities and environmental changes. This paper presents examples from coastal Iron Age sites in Norway, demonstrating how geophysical methods and remote sensing can help to understand slow coastal landscape development and prehistoric human responses to shoreline changes. Large-scale datasets collected in Denmark and Norway provide data on palaeohydrography, palaeotopography, and geomorphological processes, with an emphasis on palaeo beach ridges and sea level changes
New investigations of the Hjortspring boat: Dating and analysis of the cordage and caulking materials used in a pre-Roman iron age plank boat
The Hjortspring boat is the only intact example of a prehistoric sewn plank boat ever found in Scandinavia. Built from lime wood planks lashed together with cordage, the boat represents the maritime technology used by some of Northern Europe’s earliest seafarers. This article reports new analysis of the cordage and caulking material used in the construction of the Hjortspring boat. We provide the first ever direct date for the boat based on materials from the original excavation finds, with lime bast cordage from the boat carbon dated to between 381 and 161 BCE. We report the results of GC-MS analysis of the material used to caulk the boat, which shows that it was made from a mixture of animal fat and pine pitch. We argue that the use of pine pitch in the boat’s construction indicates that the boat was not built on the Jutland peninsula and instead came from a region with more abundant pine forests. Based on the dispersal of pine forests in Northern Europe during the first millennium BCE, we propose the Baltic Sea Region east of Rügen and Scania as a likely source for the boat and its crew. We also analyze intact cordage fragments and imprints of cordage on caulking material in order to describe the sewing and rope-making techniques that were used to construct the boat. Finally, we report on the discovery of a partial human fingerprint found on a fragment of caulking material. This remarkable fingerprint provides a direct link to the ancient seafarers who used this boat.
