Modelling Social Housing:Exploring the Interplay of Social Life and Built Environments on European Social Housing Estates
No full textThe book Modelling Social Housing delves into the intricate relationship between everyday social life and the architectural landscapes of social housing across European cities.Focusing on social housing across multiple temporal and socio-cultural European urban settings, the book traces how the confluence of distributed knowledges, technological resources, and architectural histories may have considerable effects across different scales, ranging from everyday interactions to welfare planning and economic policies. To capture these intricate socio-spatial relations, the book introduces the concept of ‘social urban modelling’ as a novel analytical approach to social housing research. Spanning historical trajectories, contemporary challenges and future potentials, this book brings together scholars from diverse fields including architecture, history, anthropology, sociology, geography and art history. Through examinations of architectural designs, urban planning assemblages, contemporary redevelopment projects and everyday appropriations by residents, this book unveils the intricate layers of social housing dynamics in European cities. From the adoption of Mediterranean and Islamic architectural typologies in mid-20th century Denmark to the innovative bureaucratic structures of the London County Council in post-war Britain, each chapter provides new insights into the spatial and social transformations of European social housing. Through empirical cases from across Europe, we ask: How might resident-driven initiatives reshape urban landscapes? What are the implications of densification processes on social housing estates? No full textRecent studies in Nordic and European architectural- and urban history have emphasized the importance of commercial modernism in the making of European welfare societies. However, as this research has predominantly approached architecture from a planning and design angle, we know little about the actual use of these spaces and their socio-spatial flexibility and capacity in negotiating welfare on an everyday scale. Focusing on four shops located in Grantoften Shopping Center, this article introduces the concept of ‘more-than-mercantile relations’ to capture the multifaceted negotiations and exchanges through which local actors mobilize the spatiality of Grantoften Shopping Center into forms of everyday welfare. Combining archival studies and ethnographic data, the article examines how welfare at a local level is negotiated through specific temporal entwinements of spatial locations and everyday practices of care. By reimagining shopping centers as spaces of care and community interaction, this article contributes to research discussions on the geography of care, emphasizing the capacity of everyday commercial spaces to shape and be shaped by welfare practices

No full textRichard Winther og Gunnar Aagaard Andersen udførte i 1948 og 1949 sammen med flere af de øvrige kunstnerne fra kunstnersammenslutningen Linien II en serie eksperimenterende værker, der flyttede deres kunstneriske eksperimenter med den såkaldte konkretkunst, som ellers primært foregik i maleri eller skulptur, over i lyd. Dels som “støjmalerier”1, som Richard Winther senere omtalte dem, optaget på lakplader, og dels som et koncertværk tiltænkt opførelse af klassiske musikere fra et grafisk partitur. Tilsammen udgør værkerne de formentligt tidligste eksempler på lydværker af danske billedkunstnere og kan være med til både at belyse, hvordan lyd træder ind i billedkunsten i Danmark, og hvordan kunstværker i lyd både former sig efter og udfordrer kunstkonventioner og institutionslogikker.In 1948 and 1949, several artists from the Danish artist group Linien II created a series of experimental works in which they transferred concrete art methodologies from painting to sound.This article examines how these early examples of sound works by Danish visual artists both conform to and challenge artistic conventions and institutional logics
