Vinge and Jasonsminde–Two East Danish Settlements from the Second Half of the Late Neolithic
Get PDFThis paper presents two settlements from the second half of the Late Neolithic.Both are from the northeastern part of the island of Zealand in eastDenmark. Six and thirteen houses, respectively, were excavated at the sites.Remains of contemporary graves have been excavated close to both settlements.Based on analyses of the landscape, pollen data and grain finds, itis suggested that the subsistence of the two settlements was based on intensivecereal cultivation and stock farming. We suggest that two or threehouses on each site may have been inhabited contemporarneously. Thehouses, their date and the contemporary graves indicate that East Denmarkwas influenced by Southwest Sweden and the Early Bronze Age societies onthe Continent during the second half of the Late Neolithic

No full textUndersøgelsen er en del af forsknings- og formidlingsprojektet Vikingeborgen Borgring, som fandt sted i perioden sommeren 2016-2018. I forbindelse med udgravningerne i 2017 blev der på selve borgarealet undersøgt den østre halvdel af nordporten (sektion 1-4 i felt 1), hvilket viste, at østre portvange havde været brændt. Yderligere blev et område i vestdelen af den indre borgplads (felt 24) undersøgt for spor af huse, men med negativt resultat. Derudover blev der anlagt en omtrent nord-sydgående søgegrøft (felt 23) fra voldkanten i den sydlige del af den sydøstligste kvadrant med retning ud i ådalen mod syd med det formål, at undersøge besejlingsmulighederne i området. Denne undersøgelse, lavet i samarbejde med Nationalmuseets afdeling for Miljøarkæologi og Materialeforskning, viste, at der ikke var evidens for, at et vikingeskib kunne have sejlet fra havet i Køge Bugt til Borgring. Allerede i 2015 blev der lavet søgegrøfter på markerne, som stødte op til landsbyen Lellinge syd for ådalen for at afgøre, om der var vikingetidig bebyggelse i området. I sensommeren 2017 blev der lavet yderligere søgegrøfter (grøft 100-189) på den nordlige del af markarealerne, der stødte op til borgen, dog afbrudt af motorvejen som blev anlagt i 1960´erne. Trods spredte tegn på, at området har været beboet i perioder af oldtiden, var der ingen spor af aktivitet i anden halvdel af 900-tallet, hvor Borgring blev bygget
Curating the Anthropocene: Roundtable
No full textIn June 2021, we hosted the conference Nordic Nature: Art, Ecology, Landscape at KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes in Bergen, Norway. As a part of this conference, we hosted a roundtable on curating, ecology, and the discourse of the Anthropocene with leading figures in ecocritical Nordic art history. We have recreated this roundtable with a discussion among the participants for the edited volume. In the roundtable, the scholars discuss why bringing an ecocritical and decolonial lens to museum practices is important and how they have enacted such practices in their work

Pennies for the King's Towns:Ribe and Haithebu-pennies from 9th Century
No full textThis paper presents 540 pennies from Brita Malmer's combination groups 3-6 (KG 3-KG 6). The analysis divides the coin types into pennies from Ribe and Haithabu, the most prominent towns in Viking Age Denmark. The coins are divided into 10 main types, and adetailed review of types and varieties is presented, which are dated based on numismatic considerations, input from treasure finds and archaeological excavations. The period of minting is extended from c. 825-60 to cover the remaining part of the 9th century and, forone of the coin types, extended further to cover a period well into the 10th century. The coins are divided according to their use: as payment or in a demonetized form as coin-pendants. Based on the use of the coins as either payment or converted into coin-pendants and in combination with the geographical distribution, it is argued that there were two economic zones, one around Ribe and one around Hedeby in the 9th century where money was used as a managed local currency, so that pennies from the two towns largely excluded each other. In connection with the earliest penny from Ribe (c. 820/30-c. 850), one of the main types presented is a halfpenny – a significant innovation in Danish monetary history. Finally, the coinage is linked to a strong royal presence that had both the necessary power and control, as well as the organizational skills to implement and maintain coinage over quite long periods of time, and to a certain extent to enforce managed local currencie
The Afterlife of Pilgrim Signs in Europe:use, re-use and ritual practice
No full textTo date, over 30,000 finds of religious souvenirs (pilgrim signs) from different parts of Europe are recorded inpublicly accessible databases. Such items are traditionally considered sources for understanding religious industry,travel and networks. The perception has been that their role was generally over as soon as they were nolonger a part of the pilgrim’s personal equipment. However, artefact studies using public finds databases showmany examples with traces of extensive wear and modification. This indicates that they might have had anextended afterlife in different contexts as items laden with religious symbolism and inherent powers. As such,they were a part of everyday life as objects of use, handled in pragmatic ways that included reshaping, cutting,piercing and bending. This should be taken into consideration when interpreting their find contexts, and howthey are deposited in their owners’ surroundings, whether in water, wetlands, cultural layers, buildings, burialsor incorporated in church furnishing
