Exploring the potential for a 9000-year tree-ring chronology consisting of subfossil oak material from southern Scandinavia
In this study, we present the initial results from a long-term initiative to develop a multi-millennial tree-ring width (TRW) chronology for subfossil oak (Quercus spp.) trees in South Scandinavia. We have constructed 40 TRW chronologies, primarily from oak trunks extracted from peatlands, archaeological sites, drainage ditches,and infrastructure projects, as well as some submerged material. The trees included in these chronologies have been dendrochronologically dated and/or dated by radiocarbon, showing a temporal spread from 6911 ± 246 BCE to 1117 CE. Significant assemblages of trees are found during the periods 6000–4500 BCE, 3500–2600 BCE, 1750–1200 BCE, 900–400 BCE, and 200 BCE–500 CE, with intervening periods exhibiting low sample replication or gaps. The paleoclimatic information extracted from TRW and replication data may vary based on the substrate in which the trees were rooted, geographical locations, and the prevailing climate conditions during their growth. Nevertheless, extending the oak TRW chronologies is crucial because (1) no such long and annuallyresolved climate records from southern Scandinavia exist, (2) there is a widespread lack of detailed paleoclimatic proxies spanning multi-millennial periods, and (3) it will provide an essential dating tool for wooden archaeologicalartifacts. This study is the first in a series aimed at refining paleoclimatic and ecological reconstructions in southern Scandinavia. 100 ancient genomes show repeated population turnovers in Neolithic Denmark
Major migration events in Holocene Eurasia have been characterized genetically at broad regional scales1–4. However, insights into the population dynamics in the contact zones are hampered by a lack of ancient genomic data sampled at high spatiotemporal resolution5–7. Here, to address this, we analysed shotgun-sequenced genomes from 100 skeletons spanning 7,300 years of the Mesolithic period, Neolithic period and Early Bronze Age in Denmark and integrated these with proxies for diet (13C and 15N content), mobility (87Sr/86Sr ratio) and vegetation cover (pollen). We observe that Danish Mesolithic individuals of the Maglemose, Kongemose and Ertebølle cultures form a distinct genetic cluster related to other Western European hunter-gatherers. Despite shifts in material culture they displayed genetic homogeneity from around 10,500 to 5,900 calibrated years before present, when Neolithic farmers with Anatolian-derived ancestry arrived. Although the Neolithic transition was delayed by more than a millennium relative to Central Europe, it was very abrupt and resulted in a population turnover with limited genetic contribution from local hunter-gatherers. The succeeding Neolithic population, associated with the Funnel Beaker culture, persisted for only about 1,000 years before immigrants with eastern Steppe-derived ancestry arrived. This second and equally rapid population replacement gave rise to the Single Grave culture with an ancestry profile more similar to present-day Danes. In our multiproxy dataset, these major demographic events are manifested as parallel shifts in genotype, phenotype, diet and land use

Darkening of lead white in old master drawings and historic prints: a multi-analytical investigation
Old master drawings and historic prints often feature white highlights, which are typically painted using lead white, one of the most widely used historical white pigments. However, it has been observed that many of these highlights discolour over time, becoming dark brown or black due to unclear degradation processes. This phenomenon not only misrepresents the original artefacts, threatening their suitability for public display, but also diminishes their longevity. To ensure their preservation, it is essential to determine why some lead white highlights in these museum objects retain their light tones while others are prone to darkening. The objective of this study was to identify the relationships between the composition, provenance, and production methods of lead white pigments, and their role in the discolouration observed on drawings, lithographs and early photographs. Selected samples and artefacts were examined using a range of analytical techniques, namely X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and lead isotope analysis. While XRF analyses confirmed the presence of lead as the primary element in the majority of the highlights, XRPD measurements identified a variety of lead compounds such as the carbonates cerussite and hydrocerussite alongside galena—a black crystalline sulfide—and lead sulfates. Additionally, isotope analyses classified the lead raw materials into five main groups. Through these measurements, the examined lead white pigments were categorised based on their compositional properties in relation to the raw materials used, as well as their geographical and temporal origin, suggesting that lead white pigments from different production periods, spanning from older to more modern, are characterised by varying proneness to discoloration
Material politics:Approaching welfare history through urban water in 20th century Denmark
This article proposes the concept of ‘material politics’ as an analytical category for the field of Nordic welfare history. We suggest that our understanding of welfare as a socio-cultural and historical phenomenon can be further enriched if we engage analytically with the multiple ways in which the Nordic welfare societies have been imagined, materialized and negotiated through various forms of material networks, architecture and devices. Thus, to elucidate the analytical potential of material politics for welfare history, we begin the article by surveying recent interdisciplinary research on the entanglements of materiality and power. Specifically, we point to three approaches to material politics that, we suggest, are particularly relevant for the field of welfare history. In the second part of the article, we explore the applicability of material politics by examining two empirical cases, both related to urban water and bathing, that exhibit different ways in which materiality have helped to problematize, mediate and signify different aspects of urban welfare politics in 20th century Denmark. In doing so, we hope to spur further scholarly dialogue about the analytical categories through which we approach and interpret the social and cultural meaning of welfare in modern Nordic societies
