    Sjælevejning

    No full text

Proof-of-Concept Study on the Feasibility of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide-Assisted Consolidation Treatment for a Pair of Goalkeeper Gloves on Synthetic Latex-Based Foam Mock-Ups

    No full text
This work investigates the suitability of supercritical fluid technology for designing a safe, efficient and sustainable consolidation treatment for a pair of heavily degraded goalkeeper gloves. Traditional methods have revealed themselves as unsafe and inefficient, leading to material loss and a minimal enhancement of surface cohesion. To overcome these limitations, the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was explored in a treatment, where scCO2 behaves as a green solvent and consolidant carrier. In-depth and homogeneous application of the consolidant, without the need for direct contact with the foam material, was sought. As a proof of concept, the procedure was tested on samples that mimic the synthetic latex-based foam composition and condition of the object. Poly(vinyl acetate) was selected as a consolidant because its behaviour and solubility in scCO2 are known. Several experimental conditions were explored to assess the impact and feasibility of the scCO2-assisted consolidation procedure. Empirical observations, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy were used to monitor potential modifications in the samples and assess the treatment efficacy. The results highlighted the advantages and pitfalls of scCO2-assisted consolidation, paving the way for fine-tuning the process. It neither damaged the fragile surfaces of the foam samples nor increased material loss, which is an advantage compared to traditional treatments. The performed analysis suggested that homogeneous impregnation of the foams was achieved. This study might be a turning point in the conservation of foam-based museum objects, as the results indicate the suitability of the scCO2-assisted consolidation process as a non-toxic and more efficient alternative, being safer for the object

Jelling - Monuments and Landscape:Publications from the National Museum. Studies in Archaeology & History Vol. 20:4 1-2 Jelling Series

    No full text
This two-volume publication presents the joint efforts and inter-disciplinary approach of scholars from widely varying specialist fields, all of whom have contributed to the objectives of the research program of the Jelling Project. The project aimed to acquire more information about the Jelling monuments, their local preconditions, and the local and regional environments, and thus also a deeper understanding of the significance of the complex in the transformation processes that took place in Viking-Age Denmark. The publication is accordingly divided into five main parts which cover the different foci of the investigations, followed by a concluding chapter, in which the implications of the numerous results are examined and developed further. Specific analyses and catalogues are included in Appendices 1-6

The double capture of the Danish frigate Tranquebar in 1763

    No full text
This article discusses the capture of a single ship in 1763, which involved an unusually complicated sequence of events that illuminates the distinction between piracy and privateering. The vessel in question was the frigate Tranquebar, which belonged to the Danish Asiatic Company – a trading company that, in the years 1732–1772, had a monopoly over Danish shipping in Asia. The episode involving the Danish frigate, which ended up in Portuguese hands after its capture by Maratha ships, raises questions about the nature of piracy and prize law in the context of international relations between maritime powers in times of change

Negotiating water and citizenship in Copenhagen 1850–1950

    No full text
The chapter shows Copenhagen’s welfare services and citizenship through water as a resource, and that this resource was, in a sense, affecting these categories. From the mid-1800s, emergent official offices became instrumental in defining the citizens through water management and large public investments, while water closets were opposed for reasons of private property. When this opposition was overcome and a coherent water system established, cleanliness for all became defining, and achievable, and bathing halls provided a place for the now more independent citizen to cleanse herself. With the mutation of bathing to swimming halls, a new contract was in place, where citizens could expect, and were expected to, participate in multiple water activities, sustaining the clean, healthy and happy urban welfare citizen
