    Tasting local history:Dissemination of the cultural history of food through cooking and dining

    Denne artikel diskuterer, hvordan museer kan formidle madens kulturhistorie ved at lave mad, smage og dele måltider. Artiklen bygger på omfattende data fra et madkulturprojekt (SPIS Ma/eD) gennemført i Lolland-Falster, den sydøstlige del af Danmark, mellem 2020 og 2023. Analysen fokuserer på tre nøgleresultater: det sociale aspekt af erfaringsdeling og måltider, den dialogiske formidling af kulturel madhistorie og sansemæssigt engagement gennem madlavning og smagning. Artiklen konkluderer, at madlavning og spisning sammen med andre museumsgæster beriger museumsoplevelsen og transformerer den til en meget sanselig og social begivenhed, der forbinder historien med deltagernes nuværende hverdag. SPIS Ma/eD-projektet demonstrerer også værdien af ​​at integrere madkultur i museernes kommunikations- og formidlingspraksis. Denne integrerede tilgang til lokalsamfundet, uddannelsesinstitutioner og innovative arrangementer har skabt en model, der kan inspirere andre museerThis article discusses how museums can disseminate the cultural history of food by cooking, tasting, and sharing meals. The article builds on vast data from a food culture project (SPIS Ma/eD) conducted in Lolland-Falster, the southeastern part of Denmark, between 2020 and 2023. The analysis centres on three key findings: the social aspect of sharing experiences and meals, the dialogical dissemination of cultural food history, and sensory engagement through cooking and tasting. The article concludes that cooking and dining together with other museum visitors enriches the museum experience and transforms it into a highly sensory and social event that links history to the present everyday life of the participants. The SPIS Ma/eD project also demonstrates the value of integrating food culture into the communication and dissemination practices of museums. This integrated approach to the local community, educational institutions, and innovative events has created a model that may inspire other museums

    Funerary masks played a crucial role in ancient Egyptian burial practices, as part of the rituals to ensure a success‑ful afterlife. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of a gilded mummy mask from the Roman periodin Egypt from the collections of The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. Portraying a young female, the maskbelongs to a distinctive group of mummy masks, whose origins can be identified to be coming from the Dakhlahand Kharga oases. The construction of the mask (plaster, textiles) and the constituents of its polychromy (pigments,binding media) was analysed using various non‑ and micro‑destructive methods: imaging, cross‑section analysis,optical microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy‑dispersive X‑ray spectroscopy. Additionally, samples were taken for palaeoproteomic analysis with liquid chro‑matography–tandem mass spectrometry. A wide range of pigments such as yellow and red ochre, carbon‑basedblack, and Egyptian blue were identified, reflecting common materials in polychromy in Egypt during the Romanperiod. Notably, indigo was detected, suggesting its usage in mixtures to render purple hues. Analysis of adhesivesand media identified plant gum and collagen‑based animal glue. Proteomic analysis identified Equus asinus (donkey)as the predominant protein source for the collagen‑based glue. The results shed light on the materials and tech‑niques employed in ancient polychromy in Egypt in the Roman period, further enriching our understanding of artisticpractices at the time

    Paleoproteomic identification of the species used in fourteenth century gut-skin garments from the archaeological site of Nuulliit, Greenland

    Until recently, the identification of the species of origin for skin and fur materials used in the production of archaeological clothing has been based on the analysis of macro- and microscopic morphological features and on the traditional knowledge of Indigenous groups. This approach, however, is not always applicable due to the deterioration of the archaeological objects. Paleoproteomics was used as an alternative approach to identify the species of origin of fifteen samples of various tissues from approximately 600-year-old garments found in Nuulliit, northern Greenland. Proteomics revealed that a limited group of marine and terrestrial mammals were used for clothing production. The results obtained from the analysis of multiple types of clothing and elements, such as sinew thread and gut skin, suggest that their applications were based on their properties. When conclusive assignment of a sample to a species via proteomics was not possible, the observation by transmitted light microscopy of feather and hair micromorphology, if not affected by diagenesis, was used to improve the identification. The proteomic characterization of animal materials used for clothing production in the Nuulliit archaeological context provides an insight into the practical knowledge and the strategies adopted by the local Indigenous community to exploit natural resources
