    Danmarks kønneste by. Det blev de nyopførte blokke i Gellerupplanen ved Aarhus i 1970 kåret til. En socialdemokratisk drøm gik i opfyldelse, da Brabrand Boligforening anlagde et af danmarkshistoriens mest ambitiøse boligprojekter, armeret med social omfordeling og lige vilkår for alle. Den modernistiske arkitektur havde en ny tids idealer for familieliv, fritid og forbrug indstøbt i den første beton. Lige fra skraldesug til indkøbscenter – der var tænkt på det hele. Men på forbavsende få år lagde begejstringen sig. Middelklassen fortrak til parcelhusene, og Gellerup og andre montagebyggerier blev nu betragtet som betonslum, grå ørkener og farveløse sovefabrikker

    The Baltic Sea basin represents the southern and eastern Baltic shores and hinterlands of the countries Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The Mesolithic in this area begins roughly at the Pleistocene–Holocene transition and ends with the appearance of pottery in Latvia and Lithuania or the establishment of agrarian Neolithic cultures in the other countries under consideration. It comprises several archaeological entities that are differentiated by artefact spectra and were present in different timespans. During the Preboreal and Boreal, the pan-European Maglemosian was present in the western parts and the last Swiderian and Pulli complex in the east. The area is characterized during the middle Mesolithic by the Kongemose and Chojnice-Pieńki cultures, while the Kunda culture appears at the beginning of the Boreal in the eastern Baltic area. During the Late Mesolithic, the Ertebølle culture establishes itself in Germany and western Poland, while the Janisławice (Neman) culture is distributed in eastern Poland and Lithuania. Further north, the Narva culture is present in Latvia and Estonia. While most of the cultural entities in the area were originally defined from a national perspective, modern research has shown that several of these belong to superregional technocomplexes

    Temporal patterns in Mesolithic activity at Duvensee, Germany

    The Duvensee peat bog is one of the best-known prehistoric landscapes in northern Europe, with hunter-gatherer activities located on small islands on the western edge of an Early Holocene lake. Excellent organic preservation, precise excavation, and rigorous radiocarbon sample selection permit the application of Bayesian chronological modelling. Over 250 radiocarbon results date a dozen Mesolithic sites to an extended period between the 9th and 7th millennia BCE. Each site may only have been used briefly – perhaps only for a single season in some cases – but some were used repeatedly over the course of decades or even centuries. Site chronological models reveal sharp fluctuations in the overall level of recorded Mesolithic activity. A spike in the intensity and diversity of activity coincided with the rapid expansion of hazel (Corylus avellana) at the start of the Boreal biozone, but a steep decline in dated activity in the later 9th millennium BCE may be an artefact of changes in lake level, rather than reflecting a response to vegetation change, climate deterioration or societal reconfiguration. Although the Duvensee radiocarbon results can be construed to support arguments that rapid climate change had a significant impact on human activity, known climate events occurred when the record of human occupation at Duvensee was already discontinuous. It is therefore difficult to infer (or exclude) environmental factors as triggers of changes in the archaeological record. Our results suggest focusing research on the early Boreal phase, during which the widest range of site-types is preserved and accessible for archaeological investigation

    I 2024 opnåede Øm Kloster Museum at fejre 100 år som museum. Museethar gennem årene vist sig som en institution, der har formået at tilpasse sigskiftende tider: først som foreningsejet specialmuseum, herefter som en selvejendeinstitution og siden 2007, som en afdeling under det statsanerkendte MuseumSkanderborg. Museets historie er formet af de arkæologiske udgravninger, somhar stået på siden 1896 og ligeledes præget af en række ildsjæle, der på mangeområder har været med til at skabe det museum, vi kender i dag. Men deter ikke de arkæologiske udgravninger, som denne artikel vil lægge fokus på. Istedet vil historien blive fortalt gennem historier fra de sidste ti årtier

    The Ties That Bind:Computational, Cross-cultural Analyses of Knots Reveal Their Cultural Evolutionary History and Significance

    Integral to the fabric of human technology, knots have shaped survival strategies since their first invention. As the ties that bind, their evolution and diversity have afforded human cultural change and expression. This study examines knotting traditions over time and space. We analyse a sample of 338 knots from 86 ethnographically or archaeologically documented societies over 12 millennia.Utilizing a novel approach that combines knot theory with computational string matching, we show that knotted structures can be precisely represented and compared across cultures. This methodology reveals a staple set of knots that occur cross-culturally, and our analysis offers insights into their cultural transmission and the reasons behind their ubiquity. We discuss knots in the context of cultural evolution, illustrating how the ethnographic and archaeological records suggest considerable knowhow in knot-tying across societies spanning from the deep past to contemporary times. The study also highlights the potential of this methodology to extend beyond knots, proposing its applicability to a broader range of string and fibre technologies

    Continuity and Change in Lithic Tool Use Over Generations at Housepit 54 (EeRl4) at Bridge River:Two tests of heritable continuity

    Building on previous research on the cultural transmission of material culture between generations at Housepit 54 (Prentiss et al. 2016; 2020a), this poster presents ongoing research exploring the possible transmission trajectories of lithic technologies across activity areas and occupation floors at Housepit 54 using two levels of analysis: by blocks within each floor, and by floor, delimited by excavation units (floor strata [time] and excavation blocks [space]) at the site. Activity areas (based on the distribution of lithic materials) are evident in different places at different times of occupation within the pithouse (Prentiss et al. 2020b; 2022a), but are there any indications that certain areas were recognized or marked out for specific tool-related activities similarly across multiple occupations? For example, different lithic tools distributed in the same blocks or areas within blocks on time-adjacent floors can tell us about the possible use-life of particular spaces as well as the possibility of inter-generational continuity between different occupations. This implies the possibility of cultural transmission regarding the use of space over generations. The research presented takes a cultural phylogenetic approach to this study of continuity and change in the use of activity space over multiple generations at Housepit 54
