New insights into the medieval history of a non-urban territory: multidisciplinary investigations in SE Lithuania /
This paper presents results of the interdisciplinary investigations into the ancient wooden construction, presumably, a well, discovered near the Pamerkiai village, south-eastern Lithuania. The study aims at ascertaining the context (specific geological-geomorphological situation and the habitation history of this territory) of this comparably well-preserved and very uncommon find. The discovered wooden construction and its environment were investigated applying a multi-disciplinary approach combining the archaeological survey, which includes analysis of the collected artefacts, the dendrological examination of the timber used for construction, investigations of the plant macroremains and pollen found in the infilling material, and the 14C dating (conventional and AMS) of the organic material; and the geological-geomorphological characterization of the site. A new perspective to gain data about the infrastructure that might have existed in the area in the 15th century is provided: the integrated and interdisciplinary research is believed to reveal the natural and anthropogenic context. A discussion on the feasibility of tracing the origins of the modern Pamerkiai village is generated. It is alternatively hypothesized that the discovered wooden construction is part of the stopover place on the highroad that has been archaeologically unexplored
Red deer in Lithuania: History, status and management /
The history, current population status and (un)sustainable management of red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Lithuania are reviewed on the basis of 57 publications and, additionally, analysis of data on numbers and hunting bag. After the extinction of the species at the beginning of the 19th century, red deer were reintroduced into the northern part of the country during World War I. Population re-establishment was further fueled after WWII by immigration from neighboring countries and local translocations. After the introduction of the Law on Hunting in 2002, which enabled hunting organizations to rent hunting grounds for longer than 10 years, local wildlife management strategies were targeted at increasing the number of animals. However, a scientifically-based target population size for C. elaphus, agreed by all major stakeholders, has still not been defined. In the last 20 years, population growth has been exponential, deer numbers in Lithuania being estimated as 68,816 individuals in 2021. An increase in the size of the hunting bag is necessary for the sustainable management of the species at the national scale and to avoid risks of over-population as observed elsewhere in Europe
Probiotics enhance cereal yield and quality and modify agrochemical soil properties /
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of microbial biostimulants on wheat and oat growth, grain yield, and grain quality and to evaluate the influence of these probiotics on some soil agrochemical traits in the open field. Active concentrations of ProbioHumus and NaturGel and their mixtures were selected under laboratory conditions using winter wheat as a reference plant. Probiotics had a biostimulating effect on the development of the underground and above-ground part of winter wheat when 2 µL/g was used for seed priming and 2 mL/100 mL for seedling spraying. Under field conditions, after treatment of soil (2 L/ha), wheat and oat seeds (2 L/t), and plants (2 L/ha) with ProbioHumus and NaturGel, it was found that the yield of the studied cereals increased, on average, by 0.50 t/ha to 1.09 t/ha. ProbioHumus promoted protein accumulation in the investigated cereal grains. The level of microelements in wheat and oat grains increased after treatment of plants with NaturGel. Probiotics improved soil agrochemical properties, such as total and nitrate nitrogen, total and available phosphorus, organic carbon, humic acid, and humus content. In conclusion, plant probiotics can be used as an ecological alternative for growing cereals and improving the agrochemical properties of the soil
Diversity of European lissorchiid trematodes from fish and snail hosts with comments on the validity of the genus Parasymphylodora Szidat, 1943 /
Genetic markers, DNA sequences and karyotypes, of some European lissorchiid species from their intermediate and final hosts were obtained to clarify controversial data about their life cycles and taxonomy, and to reveal phylogenetic affinities. The life cycles of three species have been confirmed for the first time based on molecular data. Comparative analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and partial 28S rDNA sequences has undoubtedly proven that cercariaeum of type-species of the genus Asymphylodora , Asymphylodora tincae , develops in pulmonate snails, Anisus vortex and Stagnicola palustris , but not in the genus Bithynia . The faucet snail, Bithynia tentaculata , serves as the first intermediate host for Parasymphylodora (= Asymphylodora ) markewitschi and Parasymphylodora parasquamosa ; adults of both species were isolated from the common rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus . It has also been confirmed that B. tentaculata serves as the second intermediate host for P. parasquamosa . Phylogenetic analysis supports the validity of the genus Parasymphylodora . Two species, Parasymphylodora markewitschi and P. parasquamosa , with cercariaeum belonging to the Parasquamosum group, are closely related and are being recovered as a well-defined evolutionary lineage in phylogenetic trees. A significant divergence between Parasymphylodora spp. and Asymphylodora spp. was revealed. The diploid chromosome set of P. markewitschi is composed of 14 chromosomes and does not show similarities with karyotypes of other lissorchiid species. Asymphylodora progenetica and Asymphylodora tincae share the basal diploid value of the family, 2n = 20, and reveal very close morphology of the corresponding chromosome pairs. Karyotypic similarities of these species are in accordance with molecular phylogenetic data. Thus, the available molecular and cytogenetic data support the assignment of P. markewitschi and P. parasquamosa to a separate genus, meanwhile, the assignment of A. progenetica to the genus Parasymphylodora was not justified

Five new species of the genus Miltochrista Hübner, [1819] are described: Miltochrista kravchenkoi sp. n. (Myanmar: Chin State), Miltochrista velona sp. n. (NW Myanmar, SW China (Sichuan) and N Vietnam), Miltochrista pachia sp. n. (NW Myanmar: Chin State), Miltochrista ekliptika sp. n. (Myanmar: Kachin and Chin States), and Miltochrista tinsukia sp. n. (NE India: Assam). The lectotype for Cyllene humilis Walker, 1859 is designated. Adults, and male and female genitalia of the new and the similar species are illustrated
Bird populations most exposed to climate change are less sensitive to climatic variation /
The phenology of many species shows strong sensitivity to climate change; however, with few large scale intra-specific studies it is unclear how such sensitivity varies over a species’ range. We document large intra-specific variation in phenological sensitivity to temperature using laying date information from 67 populations of two co-familial European songbirds, the great tit (Parus major) and blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), covering a large part of their breeding range. Populations inhabiting deciduous habitats showed stronger phenological sensitivity than those in evergreen and mixed habitats. However, populations with higher sensitivity tended to have experienced less rapid change in climate over the past decades, such that populations with high phenological sensitivity will not necessarily exhibit the strongest phenological advancement. Our results show that to effectively assess the impact of climate change on phenology across a species’ range it will be necessary to account for intra-specific variation in phenological sensitivity, climate change exposure, and the ecological characteristics of a population
Cyano-phycocyanin: Mechanisms of action on human skin and future perspectives in medicine /
Cyano-phycocyanin is one of the active pigments of the blue-green algae and is usually isolated from the filamentous cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis Gomont (Spirulina). Due to its multiple physiological functions and non-toxicity, cyano-phycocyanin may be a potential substance for the topical treatment of various skin diseases. Considering that the conventional medicine faces drug resistance, insufficient efficacy and side effects, the plant origin compounds can act as an alternative option. Thus, the aim of this paper was to review the wound healing, antimicrobial, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimelanogenic and anticancer properties and mechanisms of cyano-phycocyanin topical activities on human skin. Moreover, possible applications and biotechnological requirements for pharmaceutical forms of cyano-phycocyanin for the treatment of various skin diseases are discussed in this review
Genotyping-by-sequencing based SNP discovery in a non-model rodent, the endangered hazel dormouse /
The hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius presents an exemplary non-model species that is both locally threatened and whose genetic status is not fully understood owing to insufficient resolution of the currently available molecular tools. We performed normalized Genotyping-by-Sequencing (nGBS) on 48 hazel dormouse samples collected across the species European distribution, aiming at discovering useful single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for the assessment of population structure and genomic diversity. The analyses of > 24,000 SNPs showed a high divergence between the Eastern and Western lineage of the species with high rates of SNP allele fixation, consistent with previous studies suggesting the divergence of lineages occurred over 2 mya. These results indicate that investigating inter-lineage as well as within-lineage genetic composition will be a conclusive approach for identifying conservation strategies in the future. Results presented here indicate the highest genetic divergence in the Italian and Lithuanian populations. We document how nGBS allows the discovery of SNPs that can characterize patterns of genetic variation at multiple spatial scales in a non-model organism. Chemical composition of fresh leaves headspace aroma and essential oils of four Coriander cultivars /
Aroma is one of the key food characteristics determining consumers’ perception and acceptability of products. Coriandrum sativum L. is an aromatic herb commonly used as a food additive and taste enhancer. Besides the culinary applications, coriander is also used in traditional medicine, cosmetics, and the food industry. In this study, we aimed to determine aroma composition of fresh chopped leaves and essential oils extracted from the leaves of four coriander cultivars. The essential oils were extracted from the fresh leaves using steam distillation and volatile aroma components were collected from the headspace by solid phase micro extraction technique. Analyses were carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Free radical scavenging activity of essential oils was determined by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay. The essential oils were also investigated for their anti-microbial potential. The aroma of freshly chopped coriander leaves was characterized by thirteen compounds, including six aldehydes, four alcohols, one ester and one hydrocarbon. The essential oils were comprised of twenty-seven compounds, where (E)-2-decenal, decanal, (E)-2-dodecenal and (E)-2-tetradecenal were the main components in all cultivars. Free radical scavenging activity of the essential oil samples was in the range of 6–15%. The essential oils of Desi and Hybrid cultivars exhibited least minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against all tested bacterial strains. Fresh green leaves of the Desi and Peshawari cultivars were found to be the richest in six carbon chain length alcohols and acetates, which are important constituents of the aroma giving a characteristic odor referred to as the “green note.” The Hybrid cultivar showed the highest free radical scavenging activity, bearing the highest amount of antioxidants. The study revealed that the fresh leaves HS aroma of Desi and Hybrid cultivars were different, however, their essential oils possessed almost similar chemistry and anti-bacterial activity
Curonian Spit coastal dunes landscape: climate driven change calls for the management optimization /
On the Curonian Spit, the leading conservation issue is an opposition between the two contrasting nature-management principles—anthropocentricity and biocentricity. Land managers still waver between the two options, and the worst-case scenario materializes as a rapid proliferation of vegetation to the accumulative sandplain (palve). It results in the decline of sand drift to the mobile dunes. This article aims to examine how climate change affects the coastal dune landscape and to identify current dune protection and management priorities. The analysis of hydroclimatic changes; succession patterns in forest, herbaceous, and open-sand ecosystems; and phenological-based evaluation (NDVI from MODIS, 2000–2020), influencing possible management directions, were carried out in this study. The results show the significant hydro-climatic changes (air temperature, precipitation, and sea level) occurring over the last thirty years. They influence the prevailing overgrowth trends in recent decades, especially in herbaceous ecosystems. Therefore, if the EU’s priority habitat—open-sand ecosystems—is to be preserved, the main policy recommendation is to apply adequate management tools such as grazing, and to pay more attention to the aesthetic ecosystem services of the mobile dunes parallel to biodiversity conservation
