Temperature synchronizes temporal variation in laying dates across European hole‐nesting passerines /
Identifying the environmental drivers of variation in fitness-related traits is a central objective in ecology and evolutionary biology. Temporal fluctuations of these environmental drivers are often synchronized at large spatial scales. Yet, whether synchronous environmental conditions can generate spatial synchrony in fitness-related trait values (i.e., correlated temporal trait fluctuations across populations) is poorly understood. Using data from long-term monitored populations of blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus, n = 31), great tits (Parus major, n = 35), and pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca, n = 20) across Europe, we assessed the influence of two local climatic variables (mean temperature and mean precipitation in February–May) on spatial synchrony in three fitness-related traits: laying date, clutch size, and fledgling number. We found a high degree of spatial synchrony in laying date but a lower degree in clutch size and fledgling number for each species. Temperature strongly influenced spatial synchrony in laying date for resident blue tits and great tits but not for migratory pied flycatchers. This is a relevant finding in the context of environmental impacts on populations because spatial synchrony in fitness-related trait values among populations may influence fluctuations in vital rates or population abundances. If environmentally induced spatial synchrony in fitness-related traits increases the spatial synchrony in vital rates or population abundances, this will ultimately increase the risk of extinction for populations and species. Assessing how environmental conditions influence spatiotemporal variation in trait values improves our mechanistic understanding of environmental impacts on populations
Shrews under-represented in fruit farms and homesteads /
Shrews are a less studied group of small mammals than rodents. Between 2018 and 2022, we surveyed 23 sites in Lithuania, including natural and anthropogenic habitats, with the aim to assess the proportion of Soricidae in small mammal communities and their diet based on stable isotope analysis. The average representation of Soricidae was 3.1%, about half the long-term average in other habitats in the country. The highest proportions were in meadows and farmsteads, at 4.9% and 5.0% respectively. Shrews were not trapped on farms or in young orchards, and their relative abundance was very low in intensively managed orchards (0.006 individuals per 100 trap days). Neomys fodiens and N. anomalus were unexpectedly found in homesteads, including in outbuildings. Sorex araneus and S. minutus had similar diets. The trophic carbon/nitrogen discrimination factor between invertebrates and shrew hair was 2.74‰/3.98‰ for S. araneus, 1.90‰/3.78‰ for S. minutus in the orchards. The diet of N. fodiens and N. anomalus at the homesteads requires further investigation. We propose that the under-abundance of shrews may be due to contamination by plant protection products and a lack of invertebrates under intensive agricultural practices.vv
Effects of auxin-type plant growth regulators and cold stress on the endogenous polyamines in pea plants /
The effect of pre-application of structural auxin analogues TA-12 (1-[2-chloroethoxycarbonyl-methyl]-4-naphthalenesulfonic acid calcium salt) and TA-14 (1-[2-dimethylaminoethoxicarbonylmethyl] naphthalenechlormethylate) on biochemical parameters of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Jablo) plants subjected to low temperature (LT, −1 °C, for 24h) was studied. For the first time the effects of these auxin analogues, applied with or without LT were investigated on the endogenous polyamine (PA) content. The LT treatment increased free and bound putrescine (Put) and spermine (Spm), conjugated and bound spermidine (Spd), accompanied by a decrease in conjugated Put and Spm, and free Spd. Stress biomarkers hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) as well as proline were augmented by LT treatment. The TAs application decreased conjugated polyamines (Put, Spm and Spd), free Spd, H2O2 and MDA but increased bound Spm and proline in pea plants. The application of TAs before LT lessened the alterations in PAs (mainly in free and bound fractions) and stress biomarkers content caused by LT, and enhanced conjugated Spd and phenolics, which contributed to increased plant cold tolerance
Isotopic space of the house mouse in the gradient of anthropogenic habitats /
The house mouse (Mus musculus) is a most extensively distributed omnivorous rodent species, usually living in close association with humans. Its diet includes various vegetable matter, insects and any available human food. For the first time, we assessed the dietary niche of this species by the isotopic (δ15N and δ13C) compositions of animal hair samples in the gradient of habitats, rang‐ ing from natural to fully commensal. The main factors explaining the differences in the isotopic niche of the mice, being the proxy of their diet, were the season and the source of available food. Influence of the habitat was weak, while gender, age, body mass and body condition had no influ‐ ence on the diet differences. We found that M. musculus dietary niches overlap between different habitats if mice have access to human food. Niches diverge when mice forage outdoors on natural food compared to farms where livestock feed is available. Compared to omnivorous bank vole (Cle‐ thrionomys glareolus) living synoptically, M. musculus has much wider dietary niche and consumes more foods of animal origin. Variability of the diet increases the ecological plasticity of this strongly commensal species and, together with behavioural and reproductive adaptability, allows irresisti‐ bly occupy various environments
Investigation of the antimicrobial properties of beetroot–gelatin films containing silver particles obtained via green synthesis /
Silver nanoparticles are produced using various physical, chemical or physicochemical methods. Simple low-cost nontoxic environmentally friendly, or “green”, chemistry methods are important, especially for their invasive application in the medicine and food industries. Silver-nanoparticle-enriched biocompatible films were produced at room temperature from fresh beetroot juice, AgNO3 and gelatin–water solution using the photoreduction method. The optical, morphological and structural characteristics of the experimental samples were analyzed using UV-VIS, XRD and SEM techniques. The antimicrobial activity of newly produced films was investigated using the agar diffusion method. The synthesis of nanoparticles was approved their characteristic LSPR peaks in the UV-VIS absorbance spectra. According to the XRD patterns of the films, these nanoparticles were assigned to the cubic phase of metallic Ag. It was found that the antimicrobial activity of the silver nanoparticles in the beetroot–gelatin films might be effective; however, it depends on the silver ion concentrations used for the production of these films and on the medium’s pH
Global distribution and diversity of alien Ponto-Caspian amphipods /
The Ponto-Caspian region is an important donor of aquatic alien species throughout the Northern Hemisphere, many of which are amphipod crustaceans. Despite decades of ongoing spread and negative effects on native biota, a complete picture of the global diversity and distribution of these amphipods has yet to emerge, hampering efficient monitoring and predictions of future invasion pathways. Herein, we provide a comprehensive summary of alien species taxonomic and ecomorphological diversity, as well as high-resolution distribution maps and biogeographical patterns based on > 8000 global records. We find that up to 39 species in 19 genera and five families, belonging to all four currently recognized ecomorphs, are potentially alien, their diversity gradually decreasing with distance from the native region. Most species (62%) have limited distributions, 15% are widespread, and 23% exhibit intermediate ranges. We also find that regions adjacent to the native range are comparatively less well-sampled than more distant regions. Biogeographical clustering revealed three faunal provinces that largely correspond with the Southern, Central and Northern invasion corridors. We conclude that (1) alien amphipods are a representative subsample of the native Ponto-Caspian phylogenetic and ecomorphological diversity, and (2) that their biogeographical patterns are driven by anthropogenic factors acting on taxonomically distinct native regional species pools
Chemical composition of essential oils and local knowledge of Myrica gale in Lithuania /
Myrica gale L. (Myricaceae) is an essential oil-bearing plant that is rare in Lithuania and naturally grows only in the western part of the country. The aim of this study was to analyze the composition of essential oils of Myrica gale in different habitats in Lithuania and in different parts of the plant, as well as evaluate the local knowledge about M. gale as a medicinal and aromatic plant. Samples of fruits and leaves (from one and three M. gale populations, respectively) were studied separately. Essential oils were isolated from dried fruits and leaves by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/FID and GC/MS methods. Results showed that M. gale fruits accumulated 4.03 ± 2.13% essential oils, meanwhile leaves—up to 19 times less. A total of 85 compounds were identified in the essential oils of the M. gale. Monoterpene hydrocarbons accounted for about half of the total essential oil content; meanwhile, either monoterpene hydrocarbons or sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (depending on habitat) dominated in leaves. The main compounds (depending on habitat) in essential oils of fruits and leaves were α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, limonene, δ-cadinene, and (E)-nerolidol. The high variation in the composition of M. gale essential oils suggests the presence of different chemotypes within the studied habitats of this plant. Evaluation of local knowledge of M. gale through the survey of 74 residents of 15 villages in western Lithuania showed that only 7% of respondents knew this plant. Poor knowledge of M. gale could be related to the narrow range of the natural species’ distribution in Lithuania
Solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance study of soluble and insoluble β-glucans extracted from Candida lusitaniae /
β-glucans are widely known for their biological activities. However, the choice of extraction method can significantly influence their structural characteristics, thereby potentially impacting their biological functions. In this paper, three fractions of β-glucans were obtained from Candida lusitaniae yeast via alkali and hot-water extraction methods and were analyzed using solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy was used as a nondestructive technique that preserves the structure of the analyzed molecules. The results suggest that differences in the β-glucan structure are affected by the choice of extraction method. The main difference occurred in the 82–92 ppm region with signal presence suggesting that β-glucans have a linear structure when hot-water-extracted, which is absent in alkali-extracted fractions resulting in the acquisition of β-glucans with an ordered, possibly helical structure. A hot-water extracted water-insoluble (HWN) fraction consists of linear β-1,3-glucans with other signals indicating the presence of β-1,6-linked side chains, chitin and small amounts of α-glucan impurities. For those that are alkali-extracted, alkali-insoluble (AN) and water-soluble (AWS) fractions are structurally similar and consist of an ordered β-1,3-glucan structure with β-1,6-linked side chains and a significant amount of α-glucan and chitin in both fractions
Protozoan parasites of Sarcocystis spp. in rodents from commercial orchards /
Simple Summary Small mammals not only play an important role in ecosystems, but they also can transmit a wide range of pathogens to humans and domestic animals. The data on protozoan Sarcocystis parasites in orchard-dwelling small mammals are still scarce. Members of the genus Sarcocystis form sarcocysts in the muscles of intermediate hosts and develop sporocysts in the intestines of definitive hosts. In the present study, 679 muscle samples of small mammals, collected in commercial orchards and berry plantations in Lithuania, were screened for Sarcocystis parasites via DNA analysis. The prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. was low as only nine pooled muscle samples were found to contain the parasites examined. Four species were identified in the examined small mammals, including two potentially new Sarcocystis species that were detected in the muscles of voles. The phylogenetic results suggested that birds and mammals are the definitive hosts of the Sarcocystis spp. identified in the current study. Small mammals are an important group of wildlife that can transmit pathogens to humans and animals. There is a lack of comprehensive studies on the protozoan parasites of the genus Sarcocystis in agricultural areas. The aim of the current research was to evaluate the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp., and to identify the parasite species found in the skeletal muscles of rodents and insectivores from commercial orchards. A total of 679 muscle samples from small mammals, mainly rodents (n = 674), belonging to eight species were examined. Muscle samples were pooled into groups, then digested, and the presence of the Sarcocystis species was confirmed by molecular methods. The examined parasites were determined in five rodent species, Apodemus agrarius, A. flavicollis, Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus arvalis, and M. oeconomus. The prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. was low: 2.23% in voles and 0.79% in mice. Based on a sequence comparison of cox1 and 28S rDNA, four species were identified: S. myodes, Sarcocystis cf. strixi, Sarcocystis sp. Rod1, and Sarcocystis sp. Rod2. This is the first report of S. myodes in A. agrarius, A. flavicollis, and M. arvalis. The identified species were most closely related to Sarcocystis spp., and were transmitted by predatory mammals and birds. Future studies are needed to describe the species morphologically, as well as to define the host spectrum and to evaluate their possible pathogenicity
