Phenological variations in the content of polyphenols and triterpenoids in Epilobium angustifolium herb originating from Ukraine /
The composition of secondary metabolites undergoes significant changes in plants depending on the growth phase and the influence of environmental factors. Therefore, it is important to determine the harvesting time of plant material for the optimum secondary metabolite profile and therapeutic activity of the primary material. The shoots of Epilobium angustifolium are used as a healing tea due to the presence of polyphenolic compounds. The aim of this study was to assess the composition of phenolic compounds and triterpenoid saponins in E. angustifolium leaves and flowers and to estimate the dynamics of their content depending on the flowering phase. Qualitative and quantitative characterisation of polyphenols and triterpenoids in E. angustifolium samples from Ukraine of three flowering phases were performed using the high-performance liquid chromatography photo diode array (HPLC-PDA) method. During the present study, 13 polyphenolic compounds and seven triterpenoids were identified in the plant material. It was noted that the largest content and the best polyphenol profile was in late flowering. The most important polyphenolic compounds in the plant material were chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, isoquercitin, and oenothein B. The triterpenoid profile was at its maximum during mass flowering, with corosolic and ursolic acids being the dominant metabolites. The results of the analysis revealed that the quantity of many of the tested metabolites in the raw material of E. angustifolium is dependent on the plant organ and flowering phase. The largest content of most metabolites in the leaves was in late flowering. In the flowers, the quantity of the metabolites studied was more variable, but decreased during mass flowering and increased significantly again in late flowering. The results show that E. angustifolium raw material is a potential source of oenothein B and triterpenoids
Silurian barrier reef in Lithuania: reservoir properties and low enthalpy geothermal heat potential /
The Silurian barrier reef zone in Lithuania extends for hundreds of kilometres in the narrow zone in Middle Lithuania continuing from the Saukenai reef in the north to the Vilkupiai reef in the south. After prolific Cambrian sandstone reservoirs, they are considered a secondary oil target in Lithuania. However, drilling data showed that the detected reefogenic bodies are either "dry" or saturated with water and/or viscous oil thus practically no valuable oil supply has been obtained. This study illustrates a review of the existing geological and geophysical data, acquired during oil and gas explorations since the 1960s, specifically re-analysed for geothermal purposes. The heat production rates of well doublets within the Silurian reefs range from 0.000044 to 0.24 MWh. Within the area of the Kudirka structure, 6 well doublets could be arranged from the existing 16 exploration wells, at the average distance between the producing-injecting wells of around 700 m. Kudirka has the largest reservoir volume and hence the largest reservoir heat potential (250 GWh). At the smallest distance between the doublet wells of 486 m, the thermal breakthrough would be reached after around 30 years of production-injection. Pavasaris reef shows the best geothermal capacity of a well doublet (0.241 MWh). Reservoir properties are especially good in the partially open fracture zone interval. Pavasaris reef has got 2 wells penetrating the reef, thus one doublet could be arranged within the structure. However, the available thermal energy is limited due to hydrogeological closure and small reservoir size (11.2 × 103 MWh). Other reefs (Saukenai, Vilkupiai, North Bliudziai and a reef in the north of the Vadzgirys reef belt) are small isolated structures, thus their heat potential is low. Moreover, they show low flow rates and hence thermal energy that can be extracted at their wellheads in 30 years is well below 1 × 103 MWh. The study indicates that even though the thickness of the reefal build-ups may reach up to c.90 m, the effective thickness of the reservoirs rarely reaches 20 m. Analysis of the well logs and the core sections show a high heterogeneity of the structures, and hence low recovery factors of the doublets. The distribution of effective layers is usually associated with processes such as stylolitisation and secondary fracturing with enhanced dissolution. For measured low flow rates (<9 m3/h), reusing the existing wells shows low economic viability due to the narrow diameters of the boreholes. Therefore, Silurian reefs show low potential for the application of geothermal energy in Middle Lithuania, although small geothermal projects could be achieved in the Kudirka and Pavasaris sites
Climate regulation processes are linked to the functional composition of plant communities in European forests, shrublands, and grasslands /
Terrestrial ecosystems affect climate by reflecting solar irradiation, evaporative cooling, and carbon sequestration. Yet very little is known about how plant traits affect climate regulation processes (CRPs) in different habitat types. Here, we used linear and random forest models to relate the community-weighted mean and variance values of 19 plant traits (summarized into eight trait axes) to the climate-adjusted proportion of reflected solar irradiation, evapotranspiration, and net primary productivity across 36,630 grid cells at the European extent, classified into 10 types of forest, shrubland, and grassland habitats. We found that these trait axes were more tightly linked to log evapotranspiration (with an average of 6.2% explained variation) and the proportion of reflected solar irradiation (6.1%) than to net primary productivity (4.9%). The highest variation in CRPs was explained in forest and temperate shrubland habitats. Yet, the strength and direction of these relationships were strongly habitat-dependent. We conclude that any spatial upscaling of the effects of plant communities on CRPs must consider the relative contribution of different habitat types
Differences in haemosporidian parasite prevalence and diversity in migratory and resident birds of prey species revealed by a non‐invasive sampling method /
Avian haemosporidian parasites are widespread globally and infect numerous wild bird species. However, they have primarily been studied in passerine birds. Accordingly, the prevalence and diversity of these parasites in birds of prey remain understudied. This lack of research is primarily due to the international protection status of many of these species, their sparse distribution across ecosystems and difficulty to capture in the wild. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in two species of birds of prey, namely white‐tailed eagle and lesser spotted eagle. To achieve this, a non‐invasive approach was employed, involving the extraction of DNA from blood spots present in moulted feathers. Freshly moulted feathers were collected from the ground under nests or within the nests of these birds during the breeding season. A visible blood spot located at the junction of the calamus and rachis was removed and fixed in SET buffer for molecular analysis. The identification of haemosporidian parasites ( Plasmodium , Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon ) was conducted using PCR‐based methods. Overall, parasite DNA was successfully detected in shed feathers that were kept in their original form at least decade prior to analysis. Among the studied individuals, resident white‐tailed eagles showed significantly lower infection rates of haemosporidian parasites compared to migratory lesser spotted eagles. A total of nine genetic lineages of haemosporidian parasites were detected, with seven of them being new to science based on partial sequences of the cytb gene. Additionally, the phylogenetic relationships among these new lineages and previously described ones were established. These findings highlight the suitability of non‐invasive sampling for investigating the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in wild birds of prey populations. Moreover, this approach holds promise for studying other challenging‐to‐reach and protected bird species. According to our research, there is a greater chance of finding haemosporidian parasites in freshly gathered feathers
Glycerol acrylate-based photopolymers with antimicrobial and shape-memory properties /
In this paper, for the first time, photopolymers were synthesized from glycerol acrylates with different numbers of functional groups, 2-hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate, glycerol dimethacrylate or glycerol trimethacrylate, without and with the addition of vanillin styrene. The photocuring kinetics were monitored by real-time photorheometry. The mechanical, rheological, thermal, antimicrobial and shape-memory properties of the photopolymers were investigated. All polymers synthesized demonstrated antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. 2-Hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate-based polymers showed thermoresponsive shape-memory behavior. They were able to maintain their temporary shape below the glass transition temperature and return to their permanent shape above the glass transition temperature. Synthesized photopolymers have potential to be used as sustainable polymers in a wide range of applications such as biomedicine, photonics, electronics, robotics, etc
Taming the terminological tempest in invasion science /
Standardised terminology in science is important for clarity of interpretation and communication. In invasion science – a dynamic and rapidly evolving discipline – the proliferation of technical terminology has lacked a standardised framework for its development. The result is a convoluted and inconsistent usage of terminology, with various discrepancies in descriptions of damage and interventions. A standardised framework is therefore needed for a clear, universally applicable, and consistent terminology to promote more effective communication across researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers. Inconsistencies in terminology stem from the exponential increase in scientific publications on the patterns and processes of biological invasions authored by experts from various disciplines and countries since the 1990s, as well as publications by legislators and policymakers focusing on practical applications, regulations, and management of resources. Aligning and standardising terminology across stakeholders remains a challenge in invasion science. Here, we review and evaluate the multiple terms used in invasion science (e.g. ‘non-native’, ‘alien’, ‘invasive’ or ‘invader’, ‘exotic’, ‘non-indigenous’, ‘naturalised’, ‘pest’) to propose a more simplified and standardised terminology. The streamlined framework we propose and translate into 28 other languages is based on the terms (i) ‘non-native’, denoting species transported beyond their natural biogeographic range, (ii) ‘established non-native’, i.e. those non-native species that have established self-sustaining populations in their new location(s) in the wild, and (iii) ‘invasive non-native’ – populations of established non-native species that have recently spread or are spreading rapidly in their invaded range actively or passively with or without human mediation. We also highlight the importance of conceptualising ‘spread’ for classifying invasiveness and ‘impact’ for management. Finally, we propose a protocol for classifying populations based on (i) dispersal mechanism, (ii) species origin, (iii) population status, and (iv) impact. Collectively and without introducing new terminology, the framework that we present aims to facilitate effective communication and collaboration in invasion science and management of non-native species
Prioritisation of barriers according to their impact on migratory fish in the lowland river basin district /
Artificial barriers are one of the most damaging anthropogenic factors, but are also socio-economic constructions, so the decision between removing a barrier and installing a fishway must be justified. The aim was to develop a system to quantify the amount of suitable habitat for migratory fish above barriers, to assess barriers’ passability, to prioritise them in current and historical terms and to take into account the impact of the reservoir in the selection of barrier management alternatives. For this purpose, the proportion of suitable area and the potential number of spawners were calculated separately for the flooded and free-flowing river sections above the barrier. The effect of the flooded area and fishway efficiency on the potential number of individuals was assessed and the historical importance of the areas above each barrier was evaluated. The results show that the proportion of suitable area in the total area above the barriers varies between 5 and 31%. Short river stretches of high habitat quality have a higher reproductive potential than much longer stretches of lower habitat quality. Dams with fishways can still be among the most negatively impacting barriers if they are located in the migration route of fish into a large part of the basin

Reduction of ferric chloride in yeast growth media, by sugars and aluminum /
Iron compounds can be used in antimicrobial applications by exploiting the toxicity of divalent iron to living organisms due to the Fenton reaction. In this study, the growth inhibitory effects of ferrous sulfate FeSO4·7H2O and ferric chloride FeCl3·6H2O were observed on Metschnikowia clade and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells. The relatively high amount of reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+ in the growth medium determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy may contribute to the antimicrobial activity of ferric chloride. In order to test the reducing ability of sugars in the growth media of yeasts, the reaction of ferric chloride FeCl3·6H2O with sugars was investigated. In mixtures of FeCl3·6H2O and fructose, approximately two thirds of Fe3+ can be reduced to Fe2+. When the mixture of FeCl3·6H2O and fructose is placed on the surface of aluminum foil, an iron film is formed on the surface of the aluminum due to the reduction by both fructose and aluminum. The relative amount of Fe3+ which was reduced to Fe0 reached 68%
Chemical composition, repellent, and oviposition deterrent potential of wild plant essential oils against three mosquito species /
In this study, the chemical composition, repellent, and oviposition deterrent effects of five plant essential oils (EOs) extracted from Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), Schinus terebinthifolia (Anacardiaceae), Callistemon viminalis (Myrtaceae), Helichrysum odoratissimum (Asteraceae), and Hyptis suaveolens (Lamiaceae) were evaluated against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae, and Culex quinquefasciatus. When tested at 33.3 µg/cm2, L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, C. viminalis, and H. odoratissimum were effective repellents against Ae. aegypti (89%, 91%, 90%, and 51% repellency, respectively), but they were less repellent against An. gambiae (66%, 86%, 59%, and 49% repellency, respectively). Interestingly, L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, C. viminalis, and H. odoratissimum exhibited 100% repellency against Cx. quinquefasciatus at 33.3 μg/cm2. In time-span bioassays performed at 333 μg/cm2, the EO of L. camara exhibited 100% repellence against Ae. aegypti and An. gambiae for up to 15 min and against Cx. quinquefasciatus for 75 min. The oviposition bioassays revealed that L. camara exhibited the highest activity, showing 85%, 59%, and 89% oviposition deterrence against Ae. aegypti, An. gambiae, and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively. The major compounds of L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, and C. viminalis were trans-β-caryophyllene (16.7%), α-pinene (15.5%), and 1,8-cineole (38.1%), respectively. In conclusion, the L. camara and S. terebinthifolia EOs have the potential to be natural mosquito repellents
