    Synergies and trade-offs between ecosystem services in Costa Rica

    Ecosystems services have become a key concept in understanding the way humans benefit from ecosystems. In Costa Rica, a pioneer national scheme of payment provides compensation for forest conservation that is assumed to jointly produce services related to biodiversity conservation, carbon storage, water and scenic beauty, but little is known about the spatial correlations among these services. A spatial assessment, at national scale and with fine resolution, identified the spatial congruence between these services, by considering the biophysical potential of service provision and socioeconomic demand. Services have different spatial distributions but are positively correlated. Spatial synergies exist between current policies (national parks and the payment scheme) and the conservation of ecosystem services: national parks and areas receiving payments provide more services than other areas. Biodiversity hotspots have the highest co-benefits for other services, while carbon hotspots have the lowest. This finding calls for cautiousness in relation to expectations that forestbased mitigation initiatives such as REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) can automatically maximize bundled co-benefits for biodiversity and local ecosystem services

    Local perceptions of degradation in rangelands from a livestock farming community in Chiapas, Mexico

    The farmer’s perception was analyzed about degradation of pastures in the Francisco Villa I community, Jiquipilas municipality, Chiapas. The community is located in the nearby area of the biosphere reservation La Sepultura. The study was conducted between December 2008 and July 2009. The approach was related to agricultural anthropology and ethnography. Semi-structured interviews were carried out, and three communitarian workshops were organized. The information was systematized in tables and figures of tendencies for its analysis according to three times: past, present, and future of communitarian livestock rearing. The farmers were characterized by having rangelands and livestock, living in the community permanently, and willing to be involved in the process of analysis of this research. The results showed that farmers perceive the current degradation of their rangelands as an aspect intrinsic to the practice of the livestock system with diverse impacts. However, in regards to the past, they did not perceive relevant or significant changes in their rangelands. Farmers were optimistic in regards to the future, because they perceived that their rangelands were little degraded. The reason was the presence of operating elements supporting communitarian livestock rearing. They considered as very relevant the implementation of “less harming” practices, although they showed that the lack of technical advising and economic resources was an important limitation. It was concluded that, in Francisco Villa I, there are differences in the perceptions of degradation, but basically from the productive perspective. The individual experience as to livestock management, the family income, the availability of economic resources to be invested, and the level of environmental consciousness are the causes for the differences in the perception of rangeland degradation

    Se evaluó la productividad actual y potencial de los árboles maderables de sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP) en 35 fincas ganaderas (medianas y pequeñas), de la subcuenca del río Copán, Honduras, mediante un inventario de brinzales, latizales y fustales. Se encontró un total de 72 especies arbóreas pertenecientes a 62 géneros y 35 familias, de las cuales el 29% (21 especies), son consideradas maderables con valor comercial. El mayor potencial maderable comercial fue encontrado en el SSP de pasturas con árboles dispersos de Pinus oocarpa. Este SSP es el más abundante en las fincas estudiadas (77%), con una densidad promedio de latizales y fustales de 156 árboles ha-1 y de 43 brinzales ha-1. De igual forma, presenta un volumen comercial promedio de 71,5 m3 ha-1. De las 35 fincas inventariadas se seleccionaron ocho al azar (cuatro pequeñas y cuatro medianas), para conocer la contribución del componente maderable en la rentabilidad de las mismas. It was found a total of 72 tree species belonging to 62 genera and 35 families, of which 29% (21 species) are considered commercially valuable timber. The greatest potential for commercial timber production was found in the SPS of pasture with scattered trees of Pinus oocarpa. This SPS is the most abundant in the farms studied (77%), with an average density of saplings and adult trees of 156 trees ha-1 and 43 seedlings ha-1. It also possesses on average of 71.5 m3 ha-1 of standing commercial volume. Eight of the 35 farms were selected randomly (four small and four medium), to determine the contribution of timber to farm profitability. The financial analysis showed that in the case of medium sized farms, the contribution to NPV was 384.8 USD ha-1 and for small farms 269.7 USD ha-1, equivalent to 27 and 70% additional NPV, respectively.CATIE (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza
