During its first phase, the objective of the Mesoamerican Agroenvironmental Program (MAP) was to promote the sustainable use of land for the improvement of rural livelihoods using technologies. With the purpose to assess if MAP-1 to get the desired impact, we used two different methods: the quantitative method with the technique of Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and the qualitative method to compare the capitals of the treated families and non-treated families of MAP-1. The results of this assessment using PSM technique indicate that treated families has a higher probability (32%) to adopt technologies than the non-treated families. According to the qualitative method, it was found there are improvements in the capitals: human, social, political, culture, financial, physical and natural
Timber yield from smallholder agroforestry systems in Nicaragua and Honduras
The importance of tropical timber is increasing worldwide. However, the timber supply of tropical forests has been greatly impacted by growing deforestation associated with complex and restrictive timber harvest laws. In Central America, as well as in other developing regions, reforestation programs have often fallen short of expectations. In these cases, agroforestry proves to be a useful strategy for providing tropical timber supplies for smallholder farmers, rural development and environmental services. Timber yields and their potential revenues in four types of agroforestry systems (silvopastoral, coffee, cocoa and living fences) were researched in Nicaragua and Honduras. The results suggest that smallholder timber production in agroforestry systems is a profitable activity despite lower market prices tan commanded by timber from forests. The net value from timber sales represents 11–49 % of the total revenue from agroforestry systems. However, this amount could be 58 % higher if farmers were able to improve management practices. Encouraging the knowledge and adoption of silvicultural practices in agroforestry systems is important to increasing timber revenues among smallholder farmers in Central America
Research and development of silvopastoral systems in a village in the buffer zone of the El Ocote Biosphere Reserve, Chiapas, Mexico
A participatory research and development project in establishment of agrosilvopastoral systems was documented. This study was carried out in the village Tierra Nueva (TN), located in the Buffer zone of the ElOcote Biosphere Reserve (EOBIRE) in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. This zone is part of the area of influence of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor in Mexico (MBCM). A variety of methods related to agroforestry were used, along with the Farmer Field Schools Methodology by which producers may develop new aptitudes and Knowledge regarding cattle raising and conservation. The bovine production suystem and productive diversification of cattle raising units were analyzed. Grazing units are characterized and their carrying capacity estimated. Chemical - nutritional composition and ruminal degradation of foliage is characterized for woody fodder species. Finally, the experience is projected to the future in order to strengthen local innovation processes.Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) - MA

Influence of topographic and edaphic factors on vulnerability to soil degradation due to cattle grazing in humid tropical mountains in northern Honduras
Low altitude humid tropical mountains in Central America have experienced a process of livestock expansion during recent decades. However, the use of sloping areas for cattle grazingmay lead to significant soil degradation
and thereforewe examined the influence of the slope gradient on soil degradation in pastures in a humid tropical mountainous area in northern Honduras. Understanding this relationship permits estimates of the physical carrying capacity of the soil, which in turn may help to improve livestock use within the study area. Variables examined included soil bulk density, texture, organicmatter content and consistency aswell as visual indicators of soil and vegetation degradation. There is a significant positive correlation between the bulk density as a proxy for soil degradation and slope gradient. Furthermore, itwas foundthatwhen soils arewater-saturatedgrazing leads to
severe degradation. Togetherwith visual indicators, these data showthat paddockswith slopes less than 30% have a carrying capacity between 900 and 1900 Animal Units (AU) ha−1 year−1 andmany are currently underutilized. Paddocks with slopes between 30 and 50% have a carrying capacity between 400 and 600 AU ha−1 year−1. Paddocks with slopes over 50% have the lowest carrying capacity: less than 200 AU ha−1 year−1. The latter are frequently over-used; most of them show clear signs of soil and vegetation degradation. Land use in these areas needs to change or their grazing management needs to be reorganized to adjust actual stocking rate to physical carrying capacity of the soils to prevent further degradation
Linking plant strategies and ecosystem function: an assessment of the contribution of biodiversity to neotropical grassland productivity
To understand the diversity of strategies of resource use at the species and community level of co-existing species in semi-natural grasslands, I used three differentapproaches: a) the comparison of above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) in semi-natural grasslands and sown pastures common to silvopastoral systems in Central Nicaragua and their relationships with rainfall seasonality; b) quantitative ordination of a set of primary foliar traits and another set of traits with less well-documented evidence about their correspondence with the trade-off between resource acquisition and conservation, across various life histories and life forms; c) the determination of community weighted means of plant traits following seasonal shifts in species relative cover, over a year. These issues were investigated in a range of paddocks with two types of cover: semi-natural grassland and sown pastures within an altitudinal range of 200 to 400 m. In nine paddocks, 11 sequential biomass harvests after 22-day periods of grazing exclusion were conducted approximately every month for each paddock. In eight different paddocks 14 morpho-phenological traits were measured in the 36 dominant species. This information was complemented with: i) species cover estimations from five different cover plots in 1 x 1 m2 quadrats, located in each of these areas during the period July 2nd 2007 and May 26th 2008, totalling 440 records; ii) soil chemical and physical properties; iii) daily rainfall data. The main axis of species differentiation was identified based on primary or key foliar traits, which provided evidence of a predominant resource economy axis in these grasslands, and a second axis which differentiated life-history and life forms among species. The aggregated morpho-phenological traits showed that the dominance of plants with high foliar concentrations of P, N, Ca, K and Mg, high specific leaf area, long lateral spread by clonal growth, low leaf dry matter content and short leaf lifespan increased in the rainy season and declined towards the dry season. These results suggested the relevance of rainfall seasonality to community functional properties in these grassland assemblages and that species shift their dominance according to the general species level trade-offs between resource acquisition and conservation, in this case based on the seasonal gradient of water and, indirectly, resource supply. There were no differences in annual ANPP between sown pastures and grasslands with both sown pastures and grasslands having low productivity in the late dry season. In contrast, the temporal stability of ANPP was higher in semi-natural grasslands than in sown pastures. Overall, I interpreted that the gains of replacing grasslands with sown pastures are questionable, and need to be weighed against increased costs and the ecological and environmental risks of reducing the diversity of these grasslands. Keywords: Ecosystem processes, comparative ecology, plant functional traits, rainfall seasonality, resource use gradients, Central America.Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE)-MA
