    An Ayurvedic Understanding on Applications of Yogic Prana Mudra in Relation with Prana Vayu as a Supportive Measure during Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic

    Introduction: Our body is a mini universe made of Panchamahabhuta (five basic elements). The Panchamahabhuta siddhantha is a basic principle of Ayurveda on which the fundamentals such as sharira (physical body), dosha (biological homors), dhatu (tissues), and mala (excretory products) are explained. The disturbance in these elements leads to an imbalanced mind and body to cause various diseases. There are various mudra (hand gestures) explained in Yoga which helps to balance these basic elements within ourselves to maintain good health. Out of these, Prana mudra has been chosen as it is one such simple yogic gesture designed to balance the Prana Vayu in the body which is very essential in maintaining the proper functioning of the lungs, to energize the heart and increases vitality. Objectives: The study aims to generate a simple conceptual framework for understanding the applications of Prana mudra and to distinguish its utility in terms of Ayurveda. Methods: Appropriate literatures of both sciences are referred, and a concept has been framed. Conclusion: Prana vayu is considered as a type of vata dosha in Ayurveda. It represents the functions of vital structures such as lungs and heart, and it is also responsible for the actions which aids in sustenance of life, and it complements well with prana (vital energy), a subtle counterpart of vata as stated in the former

    Mid-Day Meal Scheme amidst COVID-19 in India - A Review Based Analysis

    The COVID-19 pandemic posed a crisis like situation in the health and education sector devastating lives of many, particularly children from poor families and putting their future heath on the verge of deterioration. It made hard for today’s man to get a healthy meal a day in pandemic induced economic shutdown. Mid-Day Meal Scheme is also promising a kind of food security to the children for whom it is quite hard to get their daily meals in the crisis. It is really important to determine the drivers and stressors deteriorating health and nutritional conditions since the pandemic is on high. Keeping these in notice, the present study was conducted to have a holistic view of the current condition of the operationalization of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. It has been tried to know whether the current implementation of Mid-Day Meal Scheme is promising a healthy meal to the children since the operationalization has been changed in context of the COVID-19 scenario. Instead of hot cooked meal, food security allowances, and dry ration are supplied to the beneficiary children. The study was conducted to know that at how much level the beneficiaries actually receiving the benefits of the scheme currently. Some suggestions were also made at the end of the study to make the scheme more available and better in terms of its distribution of services to the beneficiary children

    The current generation is concerned about lifestyle disorders and measures to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Individuals’ physical appearance, mental qualities, and illness creation are all influenced by genetic elements, according to modern science. Most diseases have a hereditary component, according to human genome studies. Genetic mutations can happen at random or as a result of an external cause. Genetic illnesses can be hereditary or not. Ayurveda is a historic Indian medical practice that dates back to the Vedic era. However, while the current knowledge of human genetics owes largely to Gregor Mendel’s work, a number of Indian writings have discussed the scientific concept of genetics before him. Although the name “genetics” was not used in Ayurveda, the concept of genetics is mentioned in several places throughout the traditional texts of Ayurveda, particularly in the Samhitas.     Self-Esteem: A Study on Elite Para-Throwers of India

    The degree of valuation and competency that we give to ourselves determines our self-esteem. We may boost our self-esteem by having a good perception of our bodies as well as the physical talents and abilities we develop through sports. We gain a sense of positive self-worth as a consequence of the praise we receive through family and friends, as well as the social bonds we form as a result of our participation in sports and physical activity. Self-esteem plays a key role in athletic performance and sporting success. In the past, studies have focused on the self-esteem concept of sports psychology in sports in elite athletes; however, there is little research on self-esteem in para-sports. This study aimed to examine the self-esteem of elite Indian para-throwers who participated at the international level. Based on this, the aim of this study was to investigate the mental self-esteem levels of elite Indian. The study group of the research consisted of 11 para-throwers (6 = standing thrower and 5 = seated thrower) who participated at the international level (Paralympic, World Championship, World Grand Prix) aged 18–40 years. Purposeful sampling approaches and easily accessible sampling methods were used in the selection of the study group. The scale form was used to collect research data. The study consisted of two parts. In the first part, of this form, there was a personal information form developed by the investigator to collect demographic information of athletes, and in the second part, there was the “Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale” developed by Rosenberg (1965). After analysis of the data, it was found that there were no significant differences in self-esteem level at level 0.05 in both groups of para-throwers and most of the para-athletes found average on self-esteem concept

    Machine Learning Techniques for Automatic Detection of Sickle Cell Anemia using Adaptive Thresholding and Contour-based Segmentation Method

    Automatic diagnosis of diseases in the medical field using image processing techniques has evolved tremendously in recent times. Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a kind of disease connected with red blood cells (RBCs) present in the human body in which deformation of cells take place. The purpose of this work is to propose an automatic image processing technique for the detection of this disease from microscopic blood images. This paper mainly focuses on automatic detection of SCA using a novel segmentation method encompassing local adaptive thresholding and active contour-based algorithm. For the detection of sickle cells, supervised classifiers such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used. Here, geometric features of healthy and unhealthy RBCs are calculated and applied to these classifiers. In this approach, performance is found slightly greater in SVM classifier than the ANN classifier trained with scaled conjugate gradient back-propagation (BP) algorithm and with hidden layer of ten neurons. The proposed approach achieves a maximum of 99.2% accuracy with SVM classifier. The performance is also studied for seven different training algorithms in the ANN classifier by varying the numbers of hidden layer neurons. Comparative analysis of the performances of these algorithms shows that, resilient BP algorithm and 10 numbers of hidden neurons gave moderately better performance in ANN with 99% accuracy. ANN and SVM classifier with adaptive thresholding and active contour technique is an efficient approach for the classification of patients with SCA

    Combination effect of silymarin, quercetin, and hesperidin on anxiety and depression in 3 nitropropionic acid-induced rat model of huntington’s disease

    Huntington’s disease is an autosomal-dominant, progressive neurodegenerative disorder with chorea, incoordination, cognitive decline, and behavioral difficulties, whereas bioflavonoids have the potential to promote anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to investigate and summarize the synergistic effect of silymarin, quercetin, and hesperidin on anxiety and depression in 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced rat model of Huntington’s disease. We divided animals into eight groups (n = 6) for different combination treatment with said bioflavonoids along with 3-NP. Anxiety and depression such as symptoms were assessed on 21st day post-treatment with elevated plus maze, light, and dark model and force swim test. Dopamine and serotonin level in the brain striatum were also measured after completion of behavioral analysis as these neurotransmitters are involved in anxiety and depression like behavior. We found that intraperitoneal administration of 3-NP (10 mg/kg B/W) for 21 days leads to anxiety and depression such as symptoms in male Wistar rats, whereas combinations of bioflavonoids ameliorate the symptoms. At the end of the study, we concluded that combination of silymarin, quercetin, and hesperidin is more effective in ameliorating anxiety and depression as compared to mono therapy

    Preparation and Evaluation of Controlled Release of Eperisone Hydrochloride Resinate Beads by Complexing with Ion Exchange Resin

    Complexes of ion-exchange resins and Eperisone hydrochloride, a model drug, were prepared using a batch method with different functional groups, loading equilibrium time, degree of cross linking, and resin particle size. Drug loading efficiency, mircromeritics properties and study of effect of cross linking and particle size on release behaviours, were also investigated. Most of the functional groups of resins were loaded with EpeH after the completion of a single batch method and it was recommended for drug loading into the ion-exchange resin. Using a batch method, drug loading could be monitored by simply measuring changes in the pH of the reaction medium since as complex formation reached completion, the pH returned to the initial pH of the eluent due to the limited amount of functional groups available for the exchange. EpeH could be loaded up to the ratio of 1 (drug): 1 (resin), depending on the physicochemical properties of the resin. As the cross linking ratio and particle size increased, release rate decreased due to the reduced effective diffusion coefficient and surface area

    Comparative Study on Nutritional Intake and Nutritional Status of Elective Pre- and Post-operative Bariatric Surgery Patients

    Obesity is a global epidemic affecting populations worldwide. Bariatric surgery is effective in treating morbid obesity in individuals who fail to lose weight even after modifying lifestyle, dietary habits, and pharmacotherapy. To provide better health care management pre- and post-bariatric surgery, it is imperative to establish the nutritional status of patients before surgery. The aim of this study was to assess and compare pre- and post-surgery nutritional status of bariatric candidates. Obesity is the basis for cluster of non-communicable diseases creating an enormous socioeconomic and public health burden. For this, laparoscopic bariatric procedures; sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass, and Mini Gastric Bypass were done for treating obesity and other related co-morbidities. The medical records of 50 subjects were reviewed for this study. Mean age and body mass index are 42.2 ± 12.9 (kg/m2) and 42.77 ± 7.9 (kg/m2), respectively. The pre-surgery mean intake of energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fat was 3048 ± 485.4 (kcal/d), 200.4 ± 40.1 (g/d), 101.6 ± 17.02 (g/d), and 156.09 ± 108.4 (g/d), respectively, which were above Recommended Dietary Allowances. The mean intake of energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fat was significantly decreased post operatively (P > 0.001) to 1400 ± 99 (kcal/d), 132.1 ± 22.3 (g/d), 69.9 ± 3.6 (g/d), and 30.9 ± 6.4 (g/d), respectively. Low intake of fiber, Vitamin A (74%), and Vitamin C (32%) was observed during pre-operative condition. The findings in this study advocates nutritional intervention and tailored supplementation pre- and post-bariatric surgery for promising results

    mHealth in Physical Therapy Practice: What Consumers Want?

    Purpose: Health-care delivery mode system has been evolving over the years. There has been an increase in adoption of mHealth technologies by health-care clients and providers. Physical Therapy and Society Summit (PASS) was sponsored by APTA in 2009. It envisioned current, evolving, and future health care needs that could be addressed by physical therapist. Recent COVID-19 pandemic has modified ways of working and addressing various needs for health care. This has led to adding finding new strategies to establish new normal of functioning. The focus should be on adding value-based practice with the consumers as key stakeholders. Thus, the authors aim to provide a literature review framework for mHealth in physical therapy practice and also understand consumer behavior and what are their wants from this emerging mode of health-care delivery. Methodology: Literature was assessed by comprehensive computerized search from January 2020 to July 2020 form multiple databases. In addition, to increase the search accuracy, reference lists of articles were also searched. Forty-six free; full-text articles, systematic reviews, RCT’s, health policy perspectives, global surveys, and guidelines were included for the literature review frame work. Consumer behavior and needs were assessed using a designed questionnaire through online survey sent through various social platforms. Conclusion: mHealth is a definite evolving change in physical therapy practice. Focus should be on Android-based application for a probable 85% target population. Self-assessments, treatment interventions, activity tracking, and report documentation are the key features consumers look for
