This thesis investigates key challenges incontemporary neutrino physics and contributes to efforts aimed at improving neutrino oscillation analyses.Neutrino oscillations provide a sensitive probe of physics beyond the Standard Model, particularly regarding neutrino mass generation and CP-violation. The work includes contributions to the upgrade of the T2KND280 near detector, notably the commissioning and installation of SuperFGD electronics, enabling improved reconstruction of hadronic final states. It also presents the first integration of the WAGASCI–BabyMIND detector into the T2K common analysis framework,HighLAND, including adapted selections and preliminary detector systematics. A central result is the first joint near-detector fit using both ND280 andWAGASCI–BabyMIND, demonstrating that WAGASCI provides valuable additional constraints on interactionand flux parameters despite limited statistics. Sensitivity studies incorporating future data and the upgraded SuperFGD further highlight the potential of these detectors to enhance systematic uncertainty constraints in upcoming T2K analyses.
ExceedGAN: Simulation above extreme thresholds using Generative Adversarial Networks
International audienceThis paper devises a novel neural-inspired approach for simulating multivariate extremes. Specifically, we propose a GAN-based generative model for sampling multivariate data exceeding large thresholds, giving rise to what we refer to as the ExceedGAN algorithm. Our approach is based on approximating marginal log-quantile functions using feedforward neural networks with eLU activation functions specifically introduced for bias correction. An error bound is provided {on the margins}, assuming a th order condition from extreme value theory. The numerical experiments illustrate that ExceedGAN outperforms competitors, both on synthetic and real-world data sets
2025 EIC-France Workshop: Physics Highlights and Perspectives
International audienceThis document presents a synthesis of the theory contributions and discussions from the 2nd EIC-France Workshop, held at IJCLab (Orsay) on 1-3 December 2025. The workshop brought together members of the French hadron-physics community to review recent theoretical developments relevant to the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and to coordinate national efforts in preparation for its early physics program. The report first summarizes the collider's initial running conditions and luminosity performance, as outlined in the EIC Early Science Matrix. It then provides concise overviews of the theoretical presentations on inclusive, semi-inclusive, exclusive, heavy-flavor, and small-x physics. Based on these discussions, two measurements emerged as especially well suited for early EIC operation and strongly aligned with areas of established French expertise: inclusive diffraction and inclusive quarkonium production. These channels offer clean signatures, robust theoretical interpretability, and direct sensitivity to fundamental QCD phenomena such as gluon saturation, heavy-quark dynamics, and the small-x structure of hadrons and nuclei. In addition, the workshop identified longer-term physics opportunities that will benefit from the full capabilities of the EIC after its ramp-up phase. These include accessing the three-dimensional structure of the pion through the Sullivan process and a broader program of exclusive three-body final states, both of which represent high-impact avenues for exploring hadronic structure and non-perturbative QCD. Together, the elements summarized in this report provide a coherent overview of the strategic priorities and scientific ambitions shaping the French community's contribution to the EIC physics program
Difficulties of the NSGA-II With the Many-Objective LeadingOnes Problem
International audienceThe NSGA-II is the most prominent multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (cited more than 50,000 times). Very recently, a mathematical runtime analysis has proven that this algorithm can have enormous difficulties when the number of objectives is larger than two (Zheng, Doerr. IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation (2024)). However, this result was shown only for the OneMinMax benchmark problem, which has the particularity that all solutions are on the Pareto front, a fact heavily exploited in the proof of this result. In this work, we show a comparable result for the LeadingOnesTrailingZeroes benchmark. This popular benchmark problem appears more natural in that most of its solutions are not on the Pareto front. With a careful analysis of the population dynamics of the NGSA-II optimizing this benchmark, we manage to show that when the population grows on the Pareto front, then it does so much faster by creating known Pareto optima than by spreading out on the Pareto front. Consequently, already when still a constant fraction of the Pareto front is unexplored, the crowding distance becomes the crucial selection mechanism, and thus the same problems arise as in the optimization of OneMinMax. With these and some further arguments, we show that the NSGA-II, with a population size by at most a constant factor larger than the Pareto front, cannot compute the Pareto front in less than exponential time
Plasma medicine is a young field that shows great promise, particularly for the treatment of chronic wounds. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) allows to heal these highly problematic wounds. This effect has been well established: numerous clinical trials report the beneficial effects of cold plasma on healing. However, the causes are only partially understood.Wound healing is a very complex phenomenon consisting of several phases, but CAP impact, which is specific to each phase, are known.Nonetheless, while studies highlight the impact of CAP on various aspects of wound healing, the fundamental mechanisms at the cellular and molecular levels are much less understood. This thesis tackle, the mechanisms of CAP positive effects, and the development of new plasma devices. First, we explored the effect of CAP on the mesenchymal migration of primary human fibroblasts and the underlying molecular mechanisms.CAP was then decomposed in order to understand the origin of its beneficial effect. The results show that individual migration becomes more efficient through the stimulation of Arp2/3 activity and that the syngergy between reactive oxygen species and the electric field produced by the plasma is responsible for this phenomenon.Second, we developed an innovative plasma device using sintered glass (diffusive configuration). We then compared this device to already well characterize devices. This comparison was made on a physical, chemical, and biological level. The diffusive configuration induces an intense electric field, produces very few chemical species, and increases collagen secretion without inducing any negative effects. Standard configurations show a low-intensity electric field, produce larger quantities of chemical species, and increase cell proliferation but induce a negative effect during long treatment. Together, these results demonstrate that the beneficial effect of cold plasma is based on synergy between the electric field and reactive oxygen species and pave the way for the design of an innovative new plasma devices for wound treatment.
Ensemble random forest for tropical cyclone tracking
International audienceEven though tropical cyclones (TCs) are well documented during the intense part of their lifecycle until they start to evanesce, many physical and statistical properties governing them are not well captured by gridded reanalysis or simulated by earth system models. Thus, the tracking of TCs remains a matter of interest for the investigation of observed and simulated tropical cyclones. Two types of cyclone tracking schemes are available. On the one hand, there are trackers that rely on physical and dynamical properties of the TCs and user-prescribed thresholds, which make them rigid. They need numerous variables that are not always available in the models. On the other hand, there are trackers leaning on deep learning which, by nature, need large amounts of data and computing power. Besides, given the number of physical variables needed for the tracking, they can be prone to overfitting, which hinders their transferability to climate models. In this study, the ability of a Random Forest (RF) approach to track TCs with a limited number of aggregated variables is explored. Hence, the tracking is considered as a binary supervised classification problem of TC-free (zero) and TC (one) situations. Our analysis focuses on the Eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic basins, for which, respectively, 514 and 431 observed tropical cyclone track records are available from the IBTrACS database during the 1980-2021 period. For each 6-hourly time step, RF associates TC occurrence or absence (1 or 0) to atmospheric situations described by predictors extracted from the ERA5 reanalysis. Then situations with TC occurrences are joined for reconstructing TC trajectories. Results show the ability and performance of this method for tracking tropical cyclones over both basins, and good temporal and spatial generalization as well. RF has a similar TC detection rate as trackers based on TCs' properties and significantly lower false alarm rate. RF allows us to detect TC situations for a range of predictor combinations, which brings more flexibility than threshold based trackers. Last but not least, this study shed light on the most relevant variables allowing to detect tropical cyclone
Globalization in Water Infrastructure: A Network of Public-Private Strategic Alliances
International audienceWater is a key sector with major repercussions on health, the natural environment, and the economy. Public ownership and control of water infrastructures are the norm in most countries. Yet some private water companies emerged as early as the nineteenth century. In the last few decades, many governments, especially in developing countries, have sought the involvement of the private sector. This work contributes to the extant literature by developing a multi-disciplinary framework to look at private participation in the sector in terms of the overall trends of governments and companies’ tendencies to form strategic alliances on water projects. In this study, the World Bank database on Private Participation in Infrastructure (PPI) is used and Social Network Analysis and GLM are implemented as analytical tools. This study finds that alliances between governments and companies on PPI projects are positively impacted by positional and relational embeddedness. Furthermore, governments and companies with a shared language and those that are geographically proximate are more likely to engage in PPI projects.A key policy finding is that on average, countries engaged in more PPI projects have a higher Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation for All) category score
A new approach for the unitary Dyson Brownian motion through the theory of viscosity solutions
In this paper, we study the unitary Dyson Brownian motion through a partial differential equation approach recently introduced for the real Dyson case. The main difference with the real Dyson case is that the spectrum is now on the circle and not on the real line, which leads to particular attention to comparison principles. First we recall why the system of particles which are the eigenvalues of unitary Dyson Brownian motion is well posed thanks to a containment function. Then we proved that the primitive of the limit spectral measure of the unitary Dyson Brownian motion is the unique solution to a viscosity equation obtained by primitive the Dyson equation on the circle. Finally, we study some properties of solutions of Dyson's equation on the circle. We prove a L ∞ regularization. We also look at the long time behaviour in law of a solution through a study of the so-called free entropy of the system. We conclude by discussing the uniform convergence towards the uniform measure on the circle of a solution of the Dyson equation
Resource allocation problems, ranging from school choice to online advertisingand healthcare, traditionally prioritize efficiency and social welfare while oftenoverlooking ethical concerns. Introducing fairness constraints into well-establishedallocation problems requires new algorithmic design principles, alters performance, and gives rise to new trade-offs between optimality and constraints satisfaction. This thesis studies four standard allocation models- online learning, prophet inequalities, auctions, and matroid-based allocation- with equity considerations, and explores how enforcing fairness impacts the allocation quality through regretbounds, competitive ratio, inequality measures, and price of fairness. We show that,in some cases, trade-offs are unavoidable; in others, the loss becomes arbitrarilysmall asymptotically; and in specific instances, fairness can be achieved at no cost.By characterizing when and how fairness constraints affect allocation outcomes, thisthesis provides guidance to both algorithm designers and policy makers seeking todeploy fair algorithms in some allocation problem scenarios.
