Solidified-air energy storage: conceptualization and thermodynamic analysis
Grid-scale electrical energy storage (EES) is a key component in cost-effective transition scenarios to renewable energy sources. The requirement of scalability favors EES approaches such as pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH) or compressed-air energy storage (CAES), which utilize the cheap and abundant storage materials water and air, respectively. To overcome the site restriction and low volumetric energy densities attributed to PSH and CAES, liquid-air energy storage (LAES) has been devised; however, it suffers from a rather small round-trip efficiency (RTE) and challenging storage conditions. Aiming to overcome these drawbacks, a novel system for EES is developed using solidified air (i.e., clathrate hydrate of air) as the storable phase of air. A reference plant for solidified-air energy storage (SAES) is conceptualized and modeled thermodynamically using the software CoolProp for water and air as well as empirical data and first-order approximations for the solidified air (SA). The reference plant exhibits a RTE of 52% and a volumetric storage density of 47 kWh per m3 of SA. While this energy density relates to only one half of that in LAES plants, the modeled RTE of SAES is comparable already. Since improved thermal management and the use of thermodynamic promoters can further increase the RTEs in SAES, the technical potential of SAES is in place already. Yet, for a successful implementation of the concept - in addition to economic aspects - questions regarding the stability of SA must be first clarified and challenges related to the processing of SA resolved
This thesis pursues the interest to give insights into the contextualization of Clinical Social Work, which is in the rehabilitative, inpatient setting in rehabilitation facilities in Southern Germany. At the beginning, the development of clinical social work with its socio-therapeutic and socio-psychological approaches as well as the research field of rehabilitation will be considered. This is followed by the formulation of the research question, which focuses on the exploration of the experience of clinical social work and clinical psychotherapy in the setting. Of interest are the existing contextual conditions as well as possible overlaps of responsibilities and competences within the interdisciplinarity. The questioning of the professions will collect the perspectives on assessments, attitudes, and the understanding of activities in the everyday work from the self-perception and the perception by others. Finally, the results are combined and supplemented by the evidence-based perspective. Through the comparison it becomes clear that clinical social work is seen as indispensable in the research field. Due to its existing expertise and social-interventive offers, it can support clients in coping with life in their living environment and enable them to lead a self-determined life and to integrate and participate in society
Influence of RIB waveguides on performance of sin-based AWGS
In this work, we investigated the influence of different etch depths of the rib waveguides on the performance of SiN-based AWGs. For this purpose, an 8-channel 100 GHz AWG was designed for a center wavelength of 850 nm. The design parameters entered were calculated using the AWG-Parameters tool. The simulations were performed with a commercial photonic tool PHASAR from Optiwave. The simulated performance was evaluated using the AWG-Analyzer tool. For the AWG design, we used three identical rib waveguides with different etch depths to simulate possible etch imperfection. The simulations show the wavelength shift and degradation of the AWG performance
Growth of carbon allotropes in plasma CVD system
Various carbon (nano-) forms, so-called allotropes, have become one of the most supporting activities in fundamental and applied research trends. Therefore, a universal deposition process capable of “adjusting” system parameters in one “deposition chamber” is highly demanding. Here, we present a low-pressure large area deposition system combining radiofrequency (RF) and microwave (MW) plasma in one chamber in different configurations, which offers a wide deposition window for the growth of sp2 carbon (carbon nanotubes, amorphous carbon), a mixture of sp2 and sp3 (diamond-like films) and pure sp3 carbon represented by diamond films. We will show that not only the type of plasma source (RF vs. MW) but also the gas mixture and plasma chemistry are crucial parameters for the controllable and reproducible growth of these allotropes at temperatures from 250 to 800 °C
Comparison of 3D 1x4 splitters based on different splitting approaches
In this paper, the design of three-dimensional configuration of Y-branch splitter is compared with Multimode Interference splitter. Both splitters use the IP-Dip polymer as a standard material for 3D laser lithography. The optical properties of the splitters for both approaches are discussed and compared
Fear of failure in female entrepreneurship in Austria
Fear of failure is a major factor influencing entrepreneurial actions. Since the female quota for startups and self-employment is still lower than for men, the aim is to determine the extent to which the fear of failure is incorporated into the entrepreneurial actions of women in Austria. The trailblazer and pioneer in female entrepreneurship America is used as an international benchmark for evaluation. A quantitative survey was conducted among women from Austria and America on their fears of failure related to self-employment and their aspirations to become self-employed. There were significant differences in the quantitative study between self-employed and non-self-employed women, irrespective of their country of origin. As a result, recommendations for action were created to reduce the influence of Fear of Failure on entrepreneurial actions of Austrian women
The impact of organizational citizenship behavior for the environment on corporate sustainability
Today, many businesses increasingly engage in pro-environmental activities to face environmental challenges such as pollution or climate change. In addition to formal management practices, employees are impacting environmental advances with voluntary pro-environmental activities, also known as Organizational Citizenship Behavior for the Environment. The purpose of this master thesis is to explore factors that could influence employees’ engagement in Organizational Citizenship Behavior for the Environment. For this aim, five semi-structured interviews were carried out with multinational corporations from the DACHL region. The results show that certain leadership styles, corporate culture, a sustainability-driven mindset, environmental concern, communication and motivation can influence employees’ engagement in Organizational Citizenship Behavior for the Environment. In addition, the cumulative effect of small initiatives seems to considerably impact environmental sustainability. In contrast to past research on this topic, this study takes a qualitative approach to explore different influencing factors of Organizational Citizenship Behavior for the Environment. In addition, the study focuses on businesses located in the DACHL region
Sie sind „[...] computer-based systems that support groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment.“ (Ellis; Gibbs; Rein 1991)
Cooperation requires an exchange of information. The transformation of cooperation due to globalization and decentralization of cooperating individuals and organizations gave rise to new communication channels. Within the years 1980 - 2022, technologies were developed that influence the exchange of information and social interaction in the digital space. An essential tool for this are so-called groupwares. They are „[...] computer-based systems that support groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment.“ (Ellis; Gibbs; Rein 1991)
The goal of this thesis is to design such a groupware or collaboration tool as a support for meetings based on social influences. Starting with the current constitution and clarification of the conceptual world, this is followed by the examination of theoretical backgrounds, which allow a discussion of this topic in the first place. In the next step the technical realization with all its project steps, from the basic idea to the implementation in different areas, is explained. The evaluation carried out in simulated environments gives conclusions for an adaptation.
Subsequently, recommendations for further development and exploration are given and future possibilities are discussed
