Handicap, déficience, différence. Une introduction aux disability studies
National audienceThe aim of this book is to introduce the French public to Disability Studies, a multi-disciplinary field of research in the humanities and social sciences which, since the end of the 1970s, has continued to grow in structure and complexity, to the point where it is now traversed by a number of currents, such as Cultural Disability Studies and Critical Disability Studies, themselves diversified into Crip Studies, Critical Studies of Ableism, Global South Disability Studies, and so on. Using an approach that is inseparably philosophical and historical, this volume presents these different currents in the order in which they emerged, together with the main concepts (impairment vs disability; ableism; disabilism; disability as metaphor; narrative prosthesis, etc.) and models (social/cultural/relational/affirmative model of disability, etc.) that they have forged to understand disability. It focuses on the debates and controversies that have led to the diversification of disability studies, and enriches them with a critical perspective.
International audienceThe lasting effects of COVID-19 on organizations have recently been documented. However, the underlying modalities of such effects remain under-explored. This article uses imprinting theory to analyze the imprint left by the COVID-19 crisis on organizations and to answer the following question: How has the COVID-19 crisis imprinted organizations? To answer this question, we study two performing arts organizations—a chamber music ensemble and a national opera company—using a combination of semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and secondary data analysis. We reveal two distinct forms of imprint—sedimented and essentialized—emerging through three modalities of imprinting (COVID-19 as repertoire, echo, and impulse) through which the crisis affected the organizations. We contribute to the literature on imprinting theory in three ways: We document the imprint of a crisis, conceptualize a new logic of re-imprinting—by subtraction—and specify how the cognitive and structural imprints interact. Finally, we discuss the managerial implications when dealing with crises.
Hyperpolypharmacy in patients with chronic kidney disease and its impact on clinical outcomes
International audienceHyperpolypharmacy (≥ 10 daily medications) is frequent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but its impact remains poorly characterized. This study, based on 3,011 non-dialyzed, non-transplant CKD outpatients from the CKD-REIN cohort (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) aimed to describe drug burden and assess associations between hyperpolypharmacy and adverse outcomes. Drug prescription, kidney function, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), hospitalizations, kidney replacement therapy and deaths before KRT were prospectively recorded over five years. Median age was 69 years and mean eGFR was 34 mL/min/1.73 m2. At baseline, 80% of the cohort had polypharmacy (≥ 5 daily medications), and 33% had hyperpolypharmacy. These rates remained stable over time. Diabetes, dyslipidemia, and a history of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases were the main contributors to hyperpolypharmacy status. Hyperpolypharmacy was associated with greater likelihoods of an ADR (hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] 1.21 [1.04-1.40]), hospitalization (HR [95%CI] 1.34 [1.18-1.51]) and death before KRT (HR [95%CI] 1.46 [1.17-1.82]). Among patients with eGFR ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73m2, hyperpolypharmacy also raised the risk of KRT initiation (HR [95%CI] 1.46 [1.00-2.13]), but not in those with eGFR < 30 (HR [95%CI] 0.94 [0.78-1.14]). These results identify hyperpolypharmacy as a significant concern in CKD and underscore the importance of regular medication reviews to reduce adverse outcomes
Byzantine compositions in Renaissance brushstrokes: the survival of maniera greca in Early-Modern pictorial practice
International audienceWhat happened to Byzantine art, or maniera greca, during the Italian Renaissance? For Vasari it vanished completely after being replaced with the beautiful “new” art generated by Cimabue, Giotto and Duccio. This fundamental idea, which has been borrowed ever since, still stands as the corner-stone of Early-Modern Art History. It was designed at a time when the Medici wanted to proclaim their city as the art-centre of the world and when Vasari was no less than their court painter. For this reason, Vasari’s ideas do not always reveal the historical realia of his time. Rather, they serve as an ideological discourse showing the triumph of Florentine and Western art over Byzantine tradition. However flattering, this discourse is of course hugely exaggerated. Yes: Renaissance Florence did become a new “cultural Constantinople”. But this did not mean that Byzantine ideas, books and icons went out of trade or fashion. On the contrary, it was precisely Byzantine intellectuals fleeing the Ottomans who brought in Italy the Greek texts that fuelled Renaissance thought and connected once more Western Europe to the ancient Hellenic world. At the same time, the fall of Constantinople in 1453 was accompanied by a massive transfer of artworks from East to the West, where Greek mosaic and tempera icons integrated the prestigious collections of pope Pius II, Lorenzo the Magnificent and cardinal Bessarion. Our communication will show that Renaissance painters were still immensely indebted to these Byzantine models. Consciously or most likely unconsciously, they borrowed Byzantine compositions and visual language, and sometimes developed styles similar to those of contemporary Eastern iconographers. Our inquiry will focus on possible parallels between Early-Modern Italian and Late-Byzantine artworks examining whether their compositions are variations on the same early Christian models, or whether they can considered be considered as an expression of a Pan-European Renaissance “air de temps” – a world of cultural exchange that transcended linguistic, political and theological boundaries
