AI Technology and Academic Writing: Knowing and Mastering the “Craft Skills”
Evidence shows that artificial intelligence (AI) has become an essential academic subject, representing about 2.2% of all scientific publications. One concern for doctoral programs is the future role of AI in doctoral writing due to the increase in AI-generated content, such as text and images. Apprehensions have been expressed that the use of AI may have a negative impact on a doctoral student’s ability to think critically and creatively. In contrast, others argue that using AI tools can provide various benefits resulting in rigorous research. This conceptual article first discusses the developing relationship between AI and dissertation writing skills. Second, the article explores the origins of the traditional dissertation and outlines 21st-century dissertation options which reflect contextual needs and utilization of AI. Third, identified writing challenges are highlighted before turning to an in-depth examination of AI-generated tools and writing craft skills required to complete the five chapters of a traditional dissertation

Our first speaker, Dr. Brandy Bagar-Fraley, is Lead Faculty and the Assistant Director for the Center for Teaching Excellence at Franklin University. Healthcare Leadership Perceptions of Screening for Social Risk Factors, toward Colorectal Cancer Screening Uptake
Colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) is an underutilized healthcare screening that can be lifesaving. The research is a phenomenological approach to a qualitative methodology, to address the scarce research of healthcare leaders’ perceptions of the impact of social risk factors to CRCS rates within a large healthcare organization in the Midwest. The research question is: What is the perception of social risk factors from healthcare leaders toward CRCS uptake at a major healthcare organization in the Midwest? This qualitative study examines a collection of data extracted from an electronic web-based survey instrument directed toward healthcare leader participants of varying demographics and backgrounds who were provided an upfront social risk factor definition of: Housing stability status, transportation access, food supply, employment, education level, and literacy level. The study assesses how healthcare leaders in the current healthcare environment feel about these social risk factors and if they perceive them as affecting CRCS completion. Study findings help bring awareness to the medical community of employers, payers, healthcare providers, and health systems, which will become literature to support ambulatory practice workflow optimizations. Improvements would involve implementation of new training as well as resources for providers, staff, and patients. Based on the results, organizational change may occur, if financial incentives are available to pay providers for the extra time spent addressing non-clinical social risk on top of other medical assessments
Impact of Patient Gender and Race on Patient Satisfaction within the Physician Patient Interaction
The prevalence of health disparities among minorities is linked to low health literacy, implicit biases, mistrust, and unfavorable outcomes among disadvantaged populations (Nadeem & Kaiser, 2022). This issue stresses the need for improved provider patient interactions which are described as trustworthy relationships that are characterized by active listening, time spent interacting, and shared decision-making to achieve advances in health literacy (Rockwell et al., 2022). There is a gap in the literature on how race, gender and patient satisfaction affect the patient clinician interaction. This study addresses this gap by examining the impact of patient gender and race on patient satisfaction within the physician patient interaction. Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data from 2017 to 2018 was analyzed using t-tests and multiple linear regression analysis. This analysis had a total of 4553 responses, 1938 males (43%) 2615 female (57%) 946 Black non-Hispanic (20.78%) and 3607 White non-Hispanic (79.22%) respondents. Overall, no significant differences exist between a patients’ perception of whether a provider explained medical options based on the patients’ gender nor ethnicity. The analysis also found that significant differences exist between a patients’ perception of whether a provider showed respect based on the patients’ gender or ethnicity. Statistically more females than males indicated that their physician showed respect from them. Additionally, more Black non-Hispanics than White non-Hispanics were shown to statistically indicate that their physician showed them respect. To truly understand trends connected with patient and provider perspectives as they relate to patient satisfaction, future research should focus on broader societal implications by obtaining demographic information on the physicians’ gender and ethnicity

Academic Disengagement of African American Male Students in Classroom Settings: A Qualitative Descriptive Study
This qualitative descriptive study explored how middle school teachers describe the academic disengagement of African American male students in the City of New York. Student engagement is predicated on the belief that learning improves a consciousness of inquisitiveness, interest, motivation, and inspiration; however, when students\u27 learning is stifled, they become susceptible to boredom and dispassion and are otherwise disengaged (Groccia, 2018). Academic disengagement, particularly in adolescence, can have sustained impacts for students by contributing to problematic and detrimental behaviors and misconduct (Henry et al., 2012; Wang & Fredricks, 2014). African American youth have an increased risk of disengagement in education (Verkuyten et al., 2019). This study collected data from 11 New York City middle school teachers and pinpointed five themes: parental involvement, classroom resources, cultural construct, student identity and classroom representation, and student behavior. Transcription was conducted using Trint software. The Braun and Clarke (2021) Thematic Analysis approach helped identify repeated patterns and inform the interpretation of meaning
Statistical Success: Three-Year Analysis of Student Performance and Student Insights from a First-Year College Statistics Course
This study included quantitative and qualitative analysis of three years of students in an introductory college-level statistics course. The quantitative analysis focused on what aspects might be relevant to student success. The instructor and the modality appear to be significantly related to student success. Somewhat surprisingly, fully onsite courses had a lower success rate than online or partially online courses. The qualitative analysis focused on the student comments on end of course surveys for the same three years. These comments were categorized based on topic and then rated from -3 reflecting a strong negative feeling, through to +3 indicating a strong positive feeling. These comments highlighted the importance students placed on live online lessons with the instructor. Students also appeared to take responsibility for their learning, noting the importance of their engagement to their success. This study provided unique insights to student success in an introductory college-level statistics course. Instructor and student engagement is key, along with opportunities for live connections
Optimizing Medication Prior Authorization
Problem: Prior authorizations (PAs) play a pivotal role in ensuring patients’ access to prescription medications. However, this process often leads to delays in patient care and places increased burden on healthcare professionals.
Aim of the Project: The aim of this project was to expedite the processing of medication PAs for adult patients with a target of reducing the processing time to less than 36 hours. This not only facilitates prompt medication initiation for patients but also reduces costs and time expended by the healthcare organization.
Review of the Evidence: A comprehensive review of the literature indicates that suboptimal PA processes can result in patient care delays, elevated healthcare expenses, and added administrative burden. Evidence showed centralizing responsibilities and utilizing electronic prior authorization (ePA) systems simplified and expedited the process.
Project Design: This quality improvement (QI) project design was based on Deming’s Model for Improvement principles used to enhance patient care by standardizing processes. An inter-professional team consisting of nurses, pharmacists, and administrative staff collaborated to develop and implement a new standard workflow. Using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, the team identified key drivers of delays, which included manual data entry, fragmented communication, and a lack of standardized workflows. The OhioHealth Change Management Model was used to support the development and execution of the project and to communicate the change effectively.
Intervention: The pilot intervention centralized PA tasks with a dedicated coordinator at the FQHC, utilizing electronic tools to enhance communication among the providers, pharmacies, and payers. The team conducted PDSA cycles to refine workflow standardization, PA transaction routing, and the development of a workforce coverage plan.
Significant Findings/Outcomes: The project yielded substantial results, in line with existing literature. In twelve weeks, 36 PAs were processed using the centralized workflow, reducing average processing time by 79% compared to previous months. While the average time didn’t dip below 36 hours, it improved patient and staff satisfaction, and PA processing costs dropped 78%.
Implications for Nursing: Efficiencies in the medication PA process significantly enhance nursing practice by reducing administrative burden and streamlining patient care, in alignment with the IOM six domains of healthcare quality. Additionally, this QI project supports the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Triple Aim by enhancing patient experience as nurses can devote more time to patient care instead of navigating complex, manual authorization processes
