Academic Optimism of Columbus City Schools\u27 High School Teachers in Relation to the Black-White Achievement Gap
The Black-White achievement gap has been an acknowledged problem in American public education since the 1960s with the release of the Coleman Report (1966). Academic optimism has been linked to student achievement since its development in 2006. This study seeks to confirm the link between academic optimism and student achievement, and to see if there is a connection between academic optimism and the Black-White achievement gap in an urban public-school setting.164 high school teachers from an urban school district in Ohio were surveyed to assess the level of academic optimism in their schools. This variable was then compared to the difference in math and ELA test scores between Black and White students at each school. The results of this study confirmed a significant positive correlation between academic optimism and student achievement, as well as between each of the three components of academic optimism (academic emphasis, collective efficacy, and faculty trust) and student achievement. However, there was no significant correlation found between academic optimism and the Black-White achievement gap, nor between the factors of academic optimism and the Black-White achievement gap

Child Abuse: A Study of Placement, Substantiation and Type of Abuse
Child abuse and neglect is a major health problem in the United States. Besides the obvious concerns for youth, this problem contributes to a huge economic burden for taxpayers. Despite the research and knowledge around this topic, there are still no known solutions. One response to child abuse and neglect has been to remove children from their homes. A primary placement option for these youth has been residential treatment. Residential treatment for youth has been a highly controversial topic for quite some time. In order to address this issue, authors of the Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA) of 2018 set out to overhaul the child welfare system. A primary goal of the legislation was to decrease the number of youths placed in residential facilities across the United States and to keep more youth in their familial homes. One of the ways that they attempted to accomplish this objective was by linking the requirement of a reduction in the number of youth residential placements to federal funding. Controversy over this legislation stems from the concerns of keeping youth in their homes where they are experiencing abuse and neglect. This study will determine if there is a relationship between placement and substantiated cases of child abuse and/or neglect related to type of abuse and neglect. Five years of data on CHINS (Child in Need of Services) cases in the state of Indiana will be collected in order to make this comparison
Kirkpatrick Model Evaluation on Government Intern Programs: A Qualitative Exploratory Case Study
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest healthcare system in the nation and faces management challenges in caring for veterans’ needs. This qualitative exploratory case study evaluated the VA’s Technical Career Field (TCF) internship. This internship was vital to ensure the VA closed the gap between mission-critical leadership and workforce challenges by training qualified candidates to fully staff the hospitals and address our veterans\u27 needs (VHA, 2021a). The Healthcare Leadership Technical Institute (HLTI) training program was designed to fulfill the VA strategic business objective performance goal of monitoring recruitment, retention, and evaluation (VHA, 2021a). The sample for this study was from two cohorts, Cohort A, 2018-2020, and Cohort B, 2019-2021, from three of the 19 TCF mission-critical career disciplines: Human Resources (HR), Office of Information and Technology (OIT), and Supply Chain Management (SCM). The archival secondary data from the Kirkpatrick Model Level III Behavior instrumental survey of this case study evaluated the results using Braun and Clark\u27s (2006) six phases of thematic analysis. Utilizing this approach in a systematic process ensured replication and, by definition, effectively saturated the prevalent themes and subthemes from the surveys (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The ATLAS.ti software program, manual hand coding, and the independent coder identified seven subthemes grouped into three major themes. Although the findings from the participant’s perceptions of the TCF internship were beneficial, the program has room to improve
A Rural Two-County CIT Program Study
The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is a partnership of law enforcement agencies, the behavioral healthcare system, emergency departments (EDs), advocacy groups, and other stakeholders in a geographic region. People in the community who experience a crisis related to a behavioral health (BH) condition often encounter police officers, and the CIT program offers guidance on the safe handling of those situations that ideally ends with a connection to treatment. In the United States, crisis BH resources are often unavailable, and it is common for officers to resolve the situation by initiating an ED visit, which is not associated with positive health outcomes for the patient. The aim of this study is to test the implications of Structural Functional Theory (SFT) in one CIT program. SFT suggests that imbalanced systems lead to the inappropriate reliance on other systems. The analysis of crisis events may provide insight into potential BH system improvements that align with the goals of the CIT program. One research question aims to find predictors of each disposition option available to LE officers in the CIT program. Findings in this study are drawn from the quantitative analysis of 594 CIT encounters over a 3-year period. The results of the multinomial logistic regression models indicate that adolescents and young adults experience suicide-related crises more often than other types of crises, and the most likely outcome is an ED visit. Findings suggest that the local system could benefit from improvements in BH resources, especially in crisis situations
