No full textThe Commercial Gas Company set up its principal works in Stepney in the late 1830s and generated coal gas until the mid 20th century. As London expanded, the Stepney Works was transformed from a tiny site in rural surroundings into a massive industrial complex packed with buildings, including in 1864 the world’s third largest gasholder. This book combines detailed recording of the surviving structures – the first such undertaken on a gasworks site – with analysis of previously unpublished reports, directors’ minutes and other documentary evidence, so restoring the Commercial Gas Company to its rightful place in the turbulent history of London’s gas industry

The Royal Navy victualling yard, East Smithfield, London
No full textLondon’s Royal Navy victualling yard, the first large-scale naval food supply base in Britain, was founded in 1560 and closed in 1785, having proved inadequate for the needs of the expanding Georgian navy. A substantial part of the ground plan of the yard was recorded and combined with documentary evidence to identify slaughterhouses and yards, salt houses and pickling sheds, bakeries, coopers’ workshops, storehouses, and the offices and dwellings of yard personnel. The work reported on here represents the most extensive excavation and post-excavation analysis of an early post-medieval naval victualling establishment in this country and will be of especial interest to archaeologists and naval historians
