No full textLondinium: a new map and guide to Roman London
No full textLondinium was founded by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago, shortly before AD 50. Roman London was built on a ‘green-field’ site which is now occupied by the City of London and north Southwark. The early frontier town was an immediate success and was occupied for almost four centuries. For much of this time Londinium thrived, despite disasters that included destruction at the hands of Boudicca, widespread fires, economic problems and political crises. Although abandoned in the 5th century, Londinium’s layout determined the siting and shape of the medieval City of London and hence the modern metropolis. Over the centuries London’s ground surface has risen inexorably and as a result Roman streets and buildings lie buried up to 7m below the modern street level. This map, created by Museum of London Archaeology, graphically presents our most up-to-date knowledge of that lost world: the Roman city’s topography, plan and appearance, including its roads, waterfronts, public buildings, houses and defences. Roman remains are accurately located and superimposed on the modern street plan, with visible features indicated. The accompanying guide, on the reverse of the printed map, provides a descriptive history of Londinium and illustrations of important sites and finds, many of which can be seen in the Museum of London galleries. No full textThis is the fascinating story of how ROF Hayes, a World War II tank and gun factory in west London, played its part in the war effort. Using wartime documents, specially commissioned architectural photographs and the recollections of some of the factory’s workers, this book highlights the important contribution of the Royal Ordnance Factories. It shows how the workers of ROF Hayes helped to win the Battle of Normandy in 1944 with the Sherman Firefly tank. Most unusually, all the wartime buildings at ROF Hayes survived intact. Today, it has become ProLogis Park Heathrow, a major international freight and cargo hub
St Pancras Burial Ground: excavations for St Pancras International, the London terminus of High Speed 1, 2002-3
No full textSt Pancras Churchyard was extended several times in the post-medieval period, culminating in the creation of the ‘New Burying Ground’ in 1792, with the last burial occurring in 1854. This study focuses on the southernmost ‘Third Ground’, where 1383 burials were recorded archaeologically. Analysis included reconstruction of coffin stack sequences within known burial rows, innovatively illustrated in 3D. A sample of 715 burials underwent full osteological analysis, revealing a heterogeneous population buried during a time of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. Preservation of human bone and coffins was exceptional, with inscribed coffin plates linking many burials with biographical detail. Identified individuals include refugees from the French Revolution, most notably three aristocrats and two prelates
