As part of a wider programme of archaeological investigation along the route of the proposed Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Union Railways Limited (URL) commissioned the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) to evaluate a strip of land situated near the base of the North Downs, to the east of the A229, near Maidstone, Kent. The site was centred on 55925/39444 on the URL site grid and 64 trenches were laid out to sample the evaluation area; two further trenches were added during the fieldwork. The site had been identified as having good archaeological potential during earlier field-walking

As part of a larger programme of archaeological investigation along the route of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Union Railways (South) Limited (URS) commissioned the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) to undertake an archaeological excavation at Tollgate (site code ARC TLG 98), to the south of the A2 near Gravesend, Kent, in 1998. The site had been previously evaluated in 1997. The excavation examined a colluvial sequence with a trench located on the eastern side of a dry valley

As part of a programme of archaeological investigation along the route of the Channel tunnel Rail Link, Union Railways (URL) commissioned the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) to undertake an evaluation of five trenches at Little Hook Farm, in the parish of Mersham, Kent TR 0465 3965, URL grid 84636E/19672N. The work took place between the 5th - 7th November 1997. The aim of the evaluation was to examine a number of geophysical anomalies. Archaeological features consisted of elements of a series of linear field ditches, probably of post-medieval date, and a ditch of late Iron Age date (100 BC to AD 60-70) in 1974TT. The Iron Age ditch contained several large unabraded pot sherds which suggests that there was an unlocated contemporary settlement nearby. Geologically the site lies on the boundary between the Cretaceous Lower Greensand/Speenton Clay and the Weald Clay. In all trenches there was an accumulation of brickearth type sediments of late Pleistocene and Holocene date from which the top soil was derived

Stratford Freight Terminal, ARC SFT 96

The site (SFT96) is located at the Stratford Freight Terminal in the London Borough of Newham. It lies within the floodplain of the River Lea at a height of between 4.22m and 6.78m OD, and covers an area centred on TQ 5382 1847. No previous archaeological or antiquarian explorations or findings have been recorded within the limits of the site, so that the principal indicator of its potential is a series of 30 trial pits excavated for geotechnical purposes by Foundation & Exploration Services Ltd. The Museum of London Archaeological Service (MoLAS) was commissioned by the latter to provide an archaeological assessment of the results, and the pits were accordingly monitored

The Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) was commissioned by Union Railways Limited (URL) to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Great Wood, Kent (ARC GWE98). A total of twelve trial trenches were excavated in two areas in August 1998. The site was situated to the south-west of the M2, in the Civil Parish of Cuxton, Kent. The site was on North Downs Chalk geology and consisted of arable land with wooded areas. The areas of the evaluation incorporated the northern side and part of the base of a dry valley. A deep colluvial sequence (over 3.00m) was recorded in the valley base but no archaeological features were encountered
